Get a P, a set of flats and a dirty great valve rig and your life will be complete
Hmmmm. Flats for hard rock/metal. Possibly not.

What sort of sounds are you looking for ? Looking for a micro amp specifically, or open to heavier amps ?
Totally different basses, you need to decide what you want from a bass before picking between 2 wildly different instruments
Agreed. The $$ will not approximate the P bass tone well at all. If you want a P tone, buy a P (well, actually I'd recommend buying a G&L SB-2 !). Warwick $$'s are very versatile, but the P tone is not one they do well at all.

I seem to be one of the few that did not really like the 64's. I bought a pairt to compare to a pair of Fralins in a CIJ 70's RI Jazz I had. The Wizard's seemed to be rather mid-scooped to my tastes, and extended in the lows. THe Fralin's sat very noticeably better in a band mix for me. In particular I did not like the neck 64, which sounded woolly and simply rather flabby in the bass I put it in. Probably just a case of a poor match of pickup to the bass and rest of my rig (and of course, to my tonal aims).

I'm considering putting a new fretted neck on a fretless Jazz that I have. Don't want to spend a fortune, but also don't want to get a rubbish neck. Anyone used any of these (what I believe are Mighty Mite) necks ? ..... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330895361684?_trksid=p5197.c0.m619 Or any other suggestions ? Or anyone want to swap a good fretted Jazz neck for a quality ebony board, half lined fretless neck ?
I once spent a good while tracking down a tick from a guitar at what seemed like 1 second intervals. I should have realised it earlier but it was my quartz battery watch with a seconds hand. You could watch the hand move and hear the tick simultaneously !
Quality ! -

THe Farida fretless I bought from Andy arrived today. Great packing job, and the bass is really in superb condition. A pleasure dealing with him !

I think many keen bassists seem to feel the need to go through a fiver and a fretless phase at some point. Got to get it out of your system if nothing else ! Personally, I've done the fiver thing and am now full-on into my fretless try out phase !
Only bad thing to come from all this, when I went to the guys house to try it out he had a lovely Ibanez SR1205E which played like a dream, and now I can't stop looking at them, here we go again.......!!
Uh oh !
Have stuck it on ebay instead.
Good luck with the sale although I suspect you'll be paying a lot more than £20 in ebay/Paypal fees.

Nice one. I have also moved from Ashdown to an RH450 this week. I am so impressed with the flexibility of these amps. Like any amp with four parametric EQ controls, you need a bit of experience, good ears and a little time to get the best out of them, but it's well worth the effort IMO. My Baer ML112 cabs go astoundingly well with the amp BTW, if your budget could possibly squeeze that far. To the OP, what a co-incidence about the trade. Couldn't have worked out any better for you !

Just for info really, as there's not much online to hear of these. Soundclips are of the P pickup on a G&L SB-2 through a Moen Buffalo speaker simulation straight into my computer. Sorry, withdrawn. I can't let this go at the moment. Wounded Paw Black Sheep Overdrive. Only a couple of months old. Superb condition obviously. With original box and instructions. Takes a standard Boss-type PSU. A PSU is not included, although I could add a decent one for an extra £10. It definitely benefitted from it's own buffered power in my setup, giving a very low noise floor. Info here ... http://woundedpaw.co...1&products_id=4 A truly excellent OD. Actually reminds me a lot of the B3/7K in it's drive quality, with inherently present clanky upper mids and great note attack. Also capable of many more vintage sounds, but does not sound like an Ampeg at all ! Mr Excane has done a review video on youtube. I have to say I do not like the tones he tends to use, and the pedal is capable of much more (less farty !) tones. Here's a couple of perhaps more realistic clips I have just done of the pedal, simply recorded straight into my computer via the speaker sim on a Moen Buffalo pedal. No EQ, no compression, no effects. First is with a pick .... https://soundcloud.c...sheep-demo-pick Next, fingerstyle ..... https://soundcloud.c...ep-demo-fingers Also has an effects loop (1/4" mono jacks, one for send, one for return) in the clean signal part of the blend. I have not used this loop, but it could come in very handy I guess, maybe for a compressor. Currently has hook velcro on the bottom, but this can easily be removed. For sale as it just doesn't seem a great match with my new cabs. The upper mids are just all a bit too much with my Baer cabs. Was awesome with my previous GK neo cab. £105 posted to you within mainland UK. I will post overseas, but contact me for costs.

SOrry, withdrawn, this is too good to let go. Moen Buffalo semi-parametric EQ and DI box. This little box is astounding for the price. - Bass, parametric mids and treble EQ. - Output level. - balanced XLR DI with speaker sim (this sim works very well indeed with bass guitar) - Headphones out - unbalanced amp output - ground lift I bought this as a bit of a punt in the dark, and really didn't have great expectations, but it's a cracking pedal. Really low noise floor, and a great DI too. Build quality has way exceeded my expectations. The parametric mids are seriously useful also. For sale as my new amp duplicares pretty much everything on this pedal and, you know how it is, I'm trying to raise cash, and trying to minimise my pedalboard at the same time. Comes with original box and instructions. powered by normal Boss-type adaptor (not included). £45 posted to you in mainland UK. I will post overseas, but contact me for costs. SOLD EBS Multicomp, the newer true bypass version. Quality compressor offering 3 different types of compression. Also active/passive input switch. Also has input trims internally adjustable. In very good condition. Currently has hook velcro on the bottom, but this can easily be removed. Comes with original box and instructions. Only for sale as my new amp has a great onboard compressor. £80 posted to you within mainland UK. Overseas mailing would be fine, but contact me for details. And ...... SOLD Now £275 posted 6 month old Ashdown Spyder 550. Superb condition. Babied all it's life. Never even turned up to halfway on the master. I think I have gigged it twice. No significant marks at all. Anything that you see in the pics will be dust. Works 100% perfectly. Never had any issues. Also has a quality NOS Philips ECC83 valve in V1 of the pre-amp. Will also come with the chinese ECC83 that it came with in V1 as a spare. Problem is that, despite the excellence of the Ashdown, I've fallen in love with another amp. I admit I have no staying power whatsoever with gear and my eye is easily caught by anything new and flashy. Spec here ... http://www.gear4musi...e-Bass-Head/CGD For some reason Ashdown have just discontinued the dual tube series, which surprises me as I think they are the best mid priced amps they have ever released. A bit of an under-rated gem IMO. It's a very clean sounding amp. Will not overdrive, despite what the official Ashdown demo video might lead you to believe. Despite being passive EQ, it's very flexible. Two different mid frequencies available (selectable - one or the other) for the mids knob. Will do very bright and hi-fi, or a dull thud, or anywhere in between. Unlike many users of the ABMs find, there are no volume issues with this amp either. A very good loud 500W. Our friend walbassist did an excellent review video here ... which, IMO is a very realistic sample of what the amp sounds like in real life. Yours, now, for £260 cash collected, or £275 couriered to your door within mainland UK. I have the very sturdy Ashdown double boxing to send it in. No offers at this price. And sorry no trades. Pics .......
Are the "Custom Shop" 60s pickups the same as these? Part Number is : 099-2046-000
I think so.
-
The main differences are in the pickups and the bridge and the case. The standard comes wth a nice Fender hard case, a hi mass bridge and the custom shop 60's pickup. The specials come with a gigbag, a standard bridge and their "standard" vintage pickups. The neck shapes are also slightly different, with the special's having a slightly slimmer neck than the standard. Everything is is pretty much the same, including the graphite re-inforcement in the necks. I have played both and was particularly impressed with the special P, which was possibly the nicest P I have ever played. The J was less impressive for me, and I liked the standard better (pickups difference mostly I'd guess).
Did you buy the sexy orange one from the classifieds here? I was sorely tempted by that but full austerity measures are currently in effect at my house...
I did ! It's even orangier in the flesh.
-
Thanks! That looks really good. My only concern is that the BB has no pickguard to hide the scars of a botched job. Did you have any issues?
Had no issues with putting the thumbrest on the BB. Just have to get it right first time ! No moving it later. Just for the record, I am back in the BB fold, having just bought a BB414 fretless. It will be getting a thumbrest at some point.
Is the cab that agressive or are you just not used to EQing for a cab of that format and that quality.
For most people I think "aggression" in a bass cab is in the mids, especially the upper mids. No bass cab without a dedicated mids driver would be able to come close to the upper mids controllability of the Baer. I like quite a clanky, aggressive tone. WIth traditional woofer/tweeter cabs it doesn't matter how much you dime certain mid frequencies, there is still a "hole" between the woofer and the tweeter's responses. You just don't get that with the ML112. So, yes, one does have to get used to EQing a bit differently with these cabs ..... For the first time ever I'm actually finding myself cutting mids a bit. It's the controllability to get what I actually want that I like with these cabs, rather than constantly fighting a hole in frequency response between the woofer and tweeter of traditional bass cabs.
