Fuzz/distortion/overdrive that's out of this world
hamfist replied to Lobster fingers's topic in Effects
Thanks for the ideas, but which are easy to get for less than £100 new or 2nd hand? hamfist let me know a bit more about your Woolly Mammoth clone and these clones in general ie which ones are worth looking at and which ones should I avoid?
Sorry, but my Mammoth has literally just sold, after I decided to actually put it up the forum for sale. Anyway, here's a clip I did of it this morning.... https://soundcloud.com/#alanbridges/wm-clone-clip I can't really help you too much on which specific cloners might be better than others, as I simply don't have enough experience on that. However on ebay there is this .. Frequency specific bass distortion; a dream...
hamfist replied to GarethFlatlands's topic in Effects
Looks like the ranges you can distort are fixed on the Black Sheep but I like the flexibility of being able to do 3 separately. It sounds very cool on the youtube video I'm watching at the moment. Looks like dual band might be the way to go, low end fixed range with one control to dial low end drive to avoid the loss dannybuoy mentioned, and the upper range set by the user.
Personally I would want at least the 3 range functionality. being able to boost or cut those mids is a key part influencing the character of the drive. -
Now sold This Woolly Mammoth clone really does sound just like the real thing. Check out the soundclip below which I recorded on it, just DI'ed into my computer using a cab sim DI box. Sounds just like it does through my amp though. "Unusually" decorated enclosure. All the normal Mammoth controls, Output, EQ, Pinch, and Wool. Runs on a std Boss-type PSU. This pedal seems happy playing with either my passive P or my active Thumb bass. £50 posted to you in mainland UK. Overseas posting would be fine, but contact me first for costs.
Yes, the advertising thing does bug me a bit, especially when it gets excessive. If I'm having a pint in a pub, the last think I want is somebody trying to sell me insurance or flashing their corporate logo at me. But I never used the word 'wrong'. I do think it would be a good idea for Basschat to charge companies for displaying their business logo. That way at least Basschat would benefit.
I think you are being rather unfair to Mr Baer here. The analogy of sitting in a pub and an insurance salesman coming up to you with some hard sell has no comparison to the situation here. This is a bass guitar forum, and this is a thread specifically started to discuss his products. I cannot see a negative aspect to his contribution to it. It is blatantly obvious even to a dead dog that any manufacturer will not be able to be totally objective about their own stuff (and that is always going to be part of the deal), but even so, I am thrilled that we can get the maker to be part of the discussion about his gear. I only wish more manufacturers were interested in taking part in online forum discussions.

hamfist replied to Lobster fingers's topic in Effects
You are describing the Zvex Woolly Mammoth !. I actually have a cracking Woolly Mammoth clone I could sell for (relative) peanuts if you were interested, as you will soon discover that the original costs a fortune. The circuit seems to be pretty easily reproduceable by cloners and there are good clones out there. -
Frequency specific bass distortion; a dream...
hamfist replied to GarethFlatlands's topic in Effects
Then, when you add a big dollop of distorted mids on top of your clean sound, you end up having to turn the overall volume down which makes the low frequencies quieter. Also the band pass filter made it sound a bit like the distortion was running through a fixed wah pedal all the time which didn't sound natural.
I do agree that you do need an amplification system that is capable of boosting those lows a bit, back up to required levels. Obviously if you are distorting higher frequencies and then blending your clean sound back in, the overball bass frequency output from that will be reduced. Hence the need to re-boost those bass frequencies. I find the Ashdown pedal works really well for a very light addition of grit in the upper midrange (exactly as Lomenzo tends to use it I believe). For further levels of OD/dist it doesn't really do it for me. The Black Sheep is a different animal and isn't anything like a bandpass distortion, merely letting you sculpt the bass/mids/treble content of the distorted sound back into the clean tone. It's a much better execution of the concept for me. The key is being able to have control of the overdrive from those 3 main tonal areas. Different balances of which will give hugely varying tones. -

My instant thought was the Ashdown Lomenzo pedal, which I have and like. My Wounded Paw Black Sheep does a vaguely similar thing, but with 3 knobs, one for bass freq dist, one for mids and one for highs, then mix it all back in to the clean signal with a blend knob. I like it a lot. In fact those are my two main dirt pedals so you can see that I appprove of the basic concept !! -
Not another "What rig shall I get" thread.
hamfist replied to Dave_the_bass's topic in Amps and Cabs
Even ignoring the mids, The BF Compact does not have the top end that the OP is ideally looking for.... "If it can do crisp highs it would be a bonus but not essential. " Sounds like some Berg (HD's or the new neos (ouch, they are going to be pricey !!)) or Aguilar GS cabs would provide a nice complement for good, deep bass, smooth mids (which to me means not too prominent) and sparkling highs. We don't know the weight requirements (or in fact the budget) of the OP though which, these days, is a huge thing for cabs especially. For cabs on a reasonable budget I always recommend GK neos. THis range are great quality, good power handling, light and a reasonable price. They also don't fart out too early like certain other cabs with "equivalent" specs. You do need the EQability to be able to tame the slightly prominent upper mids of these cabs though. They do respond very well to EQ though. ( It does seem odd but true that some cabs seem to need vast changes in amp EQ to notice any significant difference in the output.) The TC Electronic RS cabs have good upper and lower frequency extension with "smooth" mids also. So many choices really. It's a minefield. -
G&L SB-2 Although for £500 (ish) if you can cope with those silly P bass necks, I'd go for MIJ/MIA P over a new MIM.

Good info mcnach. Any chance of clips at all ? Wow, just looked at the price. That's CHEAP ! Whats the noise like on it? IME that's the usual failing of cheaper pedals .

From this to this......... I know it won't be to everybody's tastes but I absolutely love it ! Thanks BassDoc ! Howard did a cracking job with this scratchplate using the original one as a template. Just wanted to share, as I absolutely adore this bass (please do not remind the bass of this when I inevitably put it up for sale in a few months).

SOLD Now for sale only. Bought a few weeks ago from Ashwood1985, mainly because I had always lusted after a thumb but had never played one before and the price was very keen. However, even though this does exactly what it says on the tin, and it does it's "thumb" thing to perfection, it's just not the bass for me I realise. I am glad to have got this thumb obsession out of my system though. It's a German-made 2006 Warwick Thumb bass, bolt-on 4 string. Plays exactly like a thumb should. Sits beautifully in a band mix. Action is lean and low. Neck is straight and lovely. It's a real player. No major dings whatsoever, but a few minimal scuffs and bumps as is consistent with a bass of this age. Still, as a whole, it stll looks like a bass in really nice condition. Some minimal fretwear but these bronze Warwick frets seem to last almost forever. Has recently had new pots and output jack. All electronics work faultlessly. The nut width is a smidge under 38mm. The neck itself is chunkier in the hand (front to back) than a Jazz neck (I love the neck actually). Feels nothing whatsoever like a P neck ! I have a preference for J necks and I find this thumb very comfy to play. Body and neck are of Ovangkol. Fretboard is Wenge. Looks and feels like a high quality bass, which is exactly what it is ! However, has a thumb "indent" above the neck pickup exactly where your thumb sits. I'm guessing, simply worn by a previous owner. In use it is invisible, as your thumb sits there ! Also has a scratch on the truss rod cover and the paint on the knobs shows some wear. All of this is clearly seen in the pictures, and is reflected in the price. If you are bothered about such things a new Warwick truss rod cover and the proper knobs from Warwick would set you back about £45 posted from Germany. Unlike some thumbs, this one sits nicely on a strap, and does not neckdive at all on me. I can wear it high or low and it still seems to hang nicely. Weight is not excessive. My bathroom scales put it at 4kg, although I cannot vouch for the absolute accuracy of this as they are only, after all, cheap bathroom scales. Doesn't strike me as a particularly heavy bass though. Currently strung with a brand new set of nickel roundwounds 105-45. £660 posted to you within mainland UK. I'm happy to courier abroad, please contact me for costs, but from previous experience it'll be about an extra £20 to post to the EU. Sorry, trade option now gone. OK, here's the pics
My guess is that the TTE is not that popular because it's quite an expensive option for what is a fairly basic amp. While the core tone is lovely, the eq is very basic, which may well put people off. I sold my Spyder after getting the TTE. I loved the Spyder tone, but I just felt the TTE was a touch more refined, plus I liked the tube-driven compressor and eq sections. It also looks super cool and is a good weight.
Cool, thanks. The TTE does also overdrive a bit as well doesn't it ? It is nice and useable for that ? COuld you compare it's OD to anything else ?
I've had my NT since 89 when i was 10st and thin to average build with no mid belt ballast. Neck dive was a bit of an issue and depending on the height did make a slight differance. I did find that positioning the bass as the photo by LukeFRC shows slightly to your side then it improved balance. Now 23 yrs later and admitting to slight ballast around the mid i don't find the bass sits any different. I have always found the Thumb naturally sits further forward against my body than other basses making the left hand reach that bit further. No matter what the neck dive or body position its still one of my fav basses to play and i just accept its minor issues. Dave
Interesting info. To complete the experiment could you please put on a further 5st and report back ! On a nother note, I played the thumb with a band for the first time today, at church. Wow, sat in the mix just beautifully. So punchy. It was making me play a bit different to normal actually. My P inspires me in a rock way. The thumb seems to bring out the funker in me. -
Nice one ! I haven't had the opportunity to play through on of these yet, but have noticed that they don't seem to have taken off in popularity as I thought they would. Those who have them seem to rave about them, but doesn't seem like the shops can shift them at all. Anyone any thoughts about this ? Walbassist, I know you used to own a Spyder 550 (my current amp), how would you compare the TTE to it ?
Aesthetically an acquired taste though.
Very true. Anything single cut, I'm not quite sure whether I should play it or surf on it, or make a table out of it, or .......... ?? -
Warwick Thumbs - mine doesn't neckdive. Is it faulty ?
hamfist replied to hamfist's topic in Bass Guitars
OK, I think we've established now that the 5's are more neckdivey than 4's. That is no surprise to me as the 5's neck is so much visibly bigger than the 4's And NT's "may" possibly be rather more prone to it than BO's. I guess down to weight distribution differences around the neck joint. Although my instant gut reaction is that the structure of the neck joint really couldn't make all that much difference to the balance. Though I could be wrong. I'm wondering whether the player's body shape (ie. maybe spread in the mid regions) accentuates any neck dive. I've just had another comparison on my basses, and my thumb BO4 simply does not want to neck dive. It wants to balance and sit (on me) at a nice approx 30 degree angle, neck tilted up. No different to my P-shaped bass. And, yes, going from one to the other, it is a longer stretch to the 1st fret on the thumb than my P, but not uncomfortably so, for me at 5'10" with my slim frame and (I think) average length arms. It would be interesting to know whether those who struggle with reach and/or balance with their thumbs are of a "larger" build. The scientist within me wants to know.
