At the moment I can only give a partial response, as I've only actually gigged it once so far .... and that was in probably the worst room, acoustically, that I have played in, in 30 years gigging. For someone wanting a modern(ish) tone, with plenty of upper mid presence and decent bass response, it's a cracker. For warm, vintage tones, I'd probably look elsewhere. One thing I do find it excels at (at lowish volume only so far) is giving distortions and overdrives a nice cut and presence without being harsh on the ear at all. With many cabs it's difficult to find a balance between the two. Overall I'm very pleased with it, but for me, yet to be fully proved at volume in various venues. In fact I have been so impressed, that I've sold my Genz 8x10. The GK neo's weight was a big factor, but I really didn't think I was losing out in tone either by limiting myself to the GK.

    I have owned the 900 for about 3-4 months, done about 12-14 gigs with it so far. As a base I love it. Plenty, plenty powerful enough. Nice detail and an enormous, pillowy bottom end (which can be tamed). As a stand-alone amp with no effects I wouldn't use it because I don't think there is enough control in the mids. If you cut at 220Hz, then there seems a hole in the hi mids (say 1200-2500Hz). Same if you boost at 600Hz. However if you boost at 2500Hz on the mids, then there seems to be a hole at 400-1200Hz. For a mids-lover like myself, this is quite a serious ommision for an amp. I get over this, personally, by using an EWS BMC (bass mids control) pedal, which is costly but is of very, very high quality and musical and it transforms the amp for me, giving me way, way more mids tweakability. The amp's OD is OK (IMO) if used very mildly, but is not musical to my ears if used anything more than that. It must be said though that I have never really liked 12AX7-based overdrive. I always have liked OD/distortion from more solid-state origins. All the pots on the amp are quiet and pleasant to use. The DI is OK and quiet. A really great amp, but does have it's limitations. I currently use it through a GK 212 Neo, or a Genz 8x10 XB3. The GK is a slightly better match as it has a bit of a bump in the hi mids, which reduces the hi mid hole if I'm cutting at 220Hz, which is my preference with the amp.

    THe GK neo series are a top series of cabs, and great value when new. Light too. Well worth looking at.

    Don't be frightened about really using the extremes of the streamliner's EQ. Bass usually about 9-10 o'clock is a good starting point. With the mids there are 2 basic strategies that seem to work really well (obviously depending on bass/cab etc). Either cut heavily at 220 Hz or a solid boost at either 600Hz or 2.5 KHz. And treble to taste. Also try the gain button in and out. Even on clean settings, you will find a slightly different tonal range with each. I must play one of those OTB's one day soon !!!

    SOLD pending payment and collection - - - - - - - - I can't believe that I'm actually selling this cab. It is the best I've owned, bar none. The biggest, loudest, tightest and most toneful. Unfortunately after having lived with it for a couple of months I just can't cope with the weight of it long term. I'm not as young as I used to be and my GK 212 neo is just more attractive to me when I look at it and think about which one I'm going to take out of the house. Anyway its a 2-3 month old GB 810 -XB3. 4 ohm. It's been gigged about 4-5 times and is still in pretty much mint condition. Sounds truly wonderful. A full sound and the bottom end is so, so tight. Much like an Uber but with a touch more mids from all accounts. Only God knows why Genz stopped making these. Whenever you find an opinion of these they are very highly thought of. Very high quality, typical Genz manufacture. The negative is the size and the 70kg weight. But, the handles are well placed and the casters work well. It also has almost full length rear slide rails so , for a cabinet of this ilk, it's actually pretty reasonable to lug around. Bought new from Bassdirect. My understanding was that this was the last one in Europe, when I picked it up. £480. Collection only from the Southampton area.     Also bear in mind that the tweeters in the MBE cabs (as are all the "hardware bits") will almost certainly of inferior quality to those on the neo cabs. One thing that is the same is the woofers though. Also, even if you brace the MBE cab it will not be as sturdy as the neo cab will be. Bracing is only bracing after all. Also the plywood and the joints etc in the actual cab structure will all be of higher quality in the neo cabs. I'd say if you can afford the neo cab get it. If you can't then it's simple, surely. THe MBE cabs are what they are. Good for the price, but built down to the price. Oh, BTW, I do own a neo 212 II cab, and am very pleased with it.

    Pre-amp valves can last anything between a minute and several decades. Anything between those extremes is pretty much normal. It's virtually impossible to guarantee a long-lasting one. If you use valves you just have to accept that with them. To the OP, it does sound like it could well be your issue and is well worth changing the valve (s ?) before anything more serious is considered.

    Great thread, and a fantastic job Dave !! Well done mate. You've got me really thinking about adding some damping to my GK Neo 212 II, which I believe has no damping (although I haven't actually checked mine yet). The bottom end definately has a "boom" to it. Which I only notice when comparing to my Genz cab, but I would like to tighten the sound up a bit. May I ask what exactly the wadding you bought is ? What is it actually made for ? Is it the sort of thing that is generally available in B & Q ?

    They are the same speakers in both ranges of cabs, as far as I understand it. the difference is in the size, quality and construction of the cabs. There are multiple stories around of MBE cabs suffering awful boom problems and also bits of hardware breaking or falling off them. Also cab buzzes and rattles in the MBE cabs seem to be too common also. The neo range also have much nicer, higher cost, tweeters and also adjustable tweeter control. My experience with my Neo 212 has been all good and I have heard/read very few (if any) horror stories about them. THe cabinet is just as (if not even more) important than the speakers in a bass cab. The MBE range are OK, but are very much built down to a price. THey are what they are. If you played them side by side (which I haven't) I would suspect that you would instantly choose the Neo range.

I can't imagine a worse brand of amp to buy for that than Ashdown. Lol ! Glad you've finally found something you like.

    Tried out my new 2 x 12 GK neo last night at a rehearsal. very nice cab indeed ! A bit of a bump in the hi mids (2000-2500Hz), and a small unexpected dip at around 600Hz (not difficult to adjust back with amp EQ though). Can be very bright if you want that. I ended up running the tweeter almost off. There is plenty of bass response with the cab, although not perhaps as tight as it could be. I have heard it said that these cabs have no damping inside, so if it really bothers me, I could always put some foam batting inside to tighten things up ... a pretty simple job for almost anyone. That might well remove the dip at 600Hz too. Fit and finish seems really good. And it's light. I haven't weighed it but it "seems" lighter than the GK quoted weight. If the 112 is anything like the 212 (and it is by all accounts) then it would be a great cab for the money, for sure.

    Will be in receipt of a GK 212 Neo later today. Not exactly the same, of course, but I will post my thoughts on it. I ordered one because they seem a superb match of quality, power-handling, price and weight. Tonewise, they are reported to have an upper mid bump and tight (but not excessive) bass, which is exactly what I want.
