So I'm just refinishing a Boss pedal at the moment. Almost done repainting it and I want to put the lettering on again in the original font. I couldn't find a "Boss font" anywhere on the net, so I was wondering if anyone here could help. The manual from the Roland website has the lettering quite clearly on the first page of the PDF - would anyone be able to create a vector of just the lettering for the top plate? It's an OC-2. I just need the "output", "input" and "Octave OC-2" doing, as well as the arrows. That would allow me to create a transfer for it at the correct size. I am a noob and have no suitable software or skills for this, so I'd really appreciate any help
As far as I can tell, the text for the controls is Helvetica (use Arial at a push), but the Octave text presents a problem. It's possible to put together some outlines that say OCTAVE, but the lower case is very different and there aren't any examples in cataolgue I found. The source font doesn't seem to be around, very likely it's a custom design for Roland/Boss. Three things give me mild cause for concern here... 1. What are the correct sizes? 2. If you don't have the software, how much use is a vector file going to be? ... and the Big One... 3. How do you intend to print/make/confect a white transfer? Pete.
hi all, can anyone recommend a good bass teacher in south east london? im looking for an experienced player with a good cv, no students. cheers Lewis
You could try our very own Steve Lawson - http://www.stevelawson.net/ - I've heard good things about him. At the last count, he was in Catford. Pete. -
Hi folks I'm in touch with someone that can do food for the day, such as salad, pasta, cold chicken, ribs etc for a reasonable price per meal on the day. I don't have exact prices at the moment, but it won't be expensive. What does everyone think ? would you like food available on the day or are you bringing your own ? Cheers T
I'll most likely be self-catering, but if Vera is up for doing a Buffet I may be tempted.
Looks like USA's 91st minute goal means we are now clashing with England's next match - not only that but we've got Germany again!
Stuff that! It clashes with the Cricket too! England v Australia at Old Trafford - 10:30 start. Anyone bringing a radio? P.
Errm, FOR THE BENEFIT OF EVERYONE THAT HAS NOT FOLLOWED THIS EVENT ON THREAD Not sure if you all remember that there is an entry fee for this event to cover the cost of the hall hire for the day It's £10.00 per person, based on a calculation of 30 people coming. If more people come, there should be funds left over. If everyone signs in with a name and address, any surplus will be divided equally and refunded by cheque. Any personal information gained in this way will be destroyed after the business for the day has been completed. This information will be limited to being shared between organisers on a need -to- know basis. PRIVACY WILL BE RESPECTED. REMEMBER. IT'S £10.00 EACH !!!!!!! thank you T
A 10-spot's fine by me. Another option for any surplus dosh is to donate it to charity. Nordoff-Robbins have benefited in the past, but alternatives could include a local hospice or even BC itself. I'm content with either option tbh. Pete.
When you say 'primer' do you mean the acrylic sealant?
Sorry, yes, exactly. Rightly or wrongly, I call any coating that lives between the substrate & under/topcoats a "primer" - even if it's a brush-applied clear coat, the first coat or two of thinned varnish is the primer in my book. P.
Well if I use the nitro cans on the that site I'm not sure they'll sit on the acrylic sealer now - I'd wish I'd seen it before. I emailed the guy and he wasn't sure if it would work, either. I'm now scratching my head as to what to do. I'm thinking solid colour now - a light blue or pink. There don't seem to be many acrylic spray colours around. The wood isn't pretty at all. Any other ideas welcome....
Prep another test board with the primer & hight ye unto Halfords. Pretty much all of their rattle cans are an "acrylic formulation", it's the solvent I'm not sure of - that might attack the primer, but there's only one way to be certain. P.

Slack rod & yet no adjustment? Could be that the nut's been taken off by some loon & put back cross-threaded. That'd feel as though it were tight, but still leave the rod loose.

Two that were (& continue to be) a source of inspiration & exasperation to me. Neither have particularly fantastic production values & both share a fairly unremarkable tone, but they poke right through the mix & blow me away every time I hear them: Quite possibly Dave Peacock (but no Chas)... Keith Ferguson: Also two of the naffest album covers I own
Thanks for the info; I'll check it all out. I'm just down the road from you in Greenwich.
Aha! If the experimentation doesn't pan out (it might not tbh - artist's acrylics are nigh-on useless for signwriting & I've had nightmares attempting to get acrylic gold size to behave), you're quite welcome to borrow the budget airbrush I've got knocking around somewhere. El-cheapo Badger very basic type - good for model making, signwriting effects & artwork backgrounds but fairly rubbish at close-quarter detailing. Pete.
I must say that I'm not at all convinced this is going to look good and I'm also worried that the acrylic lacquer will not seal it well. Acrylic paints tend to dry lumpy and I've tried to minimize this by sanding down slightly although this has thinned them out somewhat. I might have to look for some other type of paint. I'm amazed I can't find any information on this subject anywhere. The Talkbass forum drew an absolute blank, Alan's weird (and very dead forum) didn't know and Google knows nothing. No one has a clue even though I would have thought there's loads of people out there who have attempted painting their own guitars before the year 2010!
If you're using Artist's Acrylics inna tube, they don't flow out & can look like you've put them on with a fork - thinning them a little more & adding a drop of washing-up liquid can persuade them to flow a little better, but they're not really intended for that. A sympathetic undercoat would help with coverage, too. Instead, these might be worth a shot: http://www.goldenpaints.com/products/color/fluid/fldcht1.php from one of these: http://www.goldenpaints.com/storelist/resu...&country=11 I've not used them, so can't vouch for their fluidity and covering power. The alternative is to have a crack at airbrushing - if you've got a local model/toy or artists supply shop, they may well have a very basic airbrush kit for reasonable money. Where in S. London are you? Pete.

Which bass would you still go for if you already had too many?

One of these: Or an SB-900 in that colour scheme with an equally fancy ash grain pattern. -
Thanks for the welcome. I tried with the guitar, but just found I was all fingers and thumbs. I did a few exercises last night, and got a couple of riffs done. Then I did the U2 song, and (although it is quite simple) I could do it Now searching through YooChoob for other cool bass-y songs. Any ideas of good (easy) newbie songs to learn - I do prefer rock, but will try anything to learn. Ta.
Welcome aboard. Seek out possibly the master of understated bass playing - Cliff Williams of AC/DC. Most of their stuff is pretty straightforward with the occasional curveball thrown in when you least expect it. (Word of warning though, the Bon Scott era stuff is often de-tuned a semitone) In my opinion, the Quo are worth a look too. Coghlan/Lancaster were a cracking rhythm section: Both examples of good solid driving playing - nothing flash or fancy. & then there's Rory Gallagher's sidekick, Gerry McAvoy: Have fun with it, that's the key. Pete.
There are dozens! Pretty much every small detail is a case of almost-but-not-quite right. If anyone's remotely intertested I might do a list tomorrow when I'm a bit less bleary-eyed. EDIT: Actually this is even faker than I thought - with the exception of the headstock shot, all of the pics are renders: http://raykit.co.uk/blog/2009/07/04/3d-bass-guitar/ Bloody hell. J.
I reckon the headstock shot is as well, which suggests that there may be a connection between the seller & the artist. They're also selling a 3D rendering of a golf club and a jpeg of a video game - caveat emptor methinks. P.
I just nicked little tricks that I liked from whoever and now they are one big mash so never set out to copy or ape anyone. I just wanted to give myself a box of tools to do what I wanted. I hope I sound like me... and have empathy within my style with what I am trying to play. I really can't see the point of sounding like some other guy... no point at all.
I think this just about sums up my approach too, nick bits off everybody from Jack Bruce to Clapton to Page to Jon Lord and then mash 'em up. It seems to work best when it's spontaneous & the purloined bits just fall into place - I suspect this is a more relaxed, carefree variant of Kongo's approach. Also don't rule out unconscious influences - they can have a habit of inveigling their way into your style without you really being aware (or even wanting them to), & it's not until someone comes up to you & says "Do you like [artist]?" that the penny drops. I'm a huge admirer of Jack Bruce (for his immediately indentifiable technique) and Neil Murray (for his uncanny ability to keep busy in a tune without getting in the way), but fall a long way short of 'mimicry'. Petty Theft, yes. Mimicry, no. Had a go mimicing Bruce, but gave it up as a bad job - figured I was better off trying to sound like me than some other bugger Pete.
The dust is pretty bad for you if you breath it in, think it is the resin that bonds it all.
Breathing any sawdust is a fairly bad idea, oily hardwoods even more so. I once got a lungful of Keruing dust on a job & 4 hours later I was the proud owner of raging 'flu. Not good. Another thing to watch with any composite board (Ply, MDF, Chipboard etc) is the glue - it can give off some really dubious fumes when it gets hot, which is a given if you're routing at full speed with a blunt bit. A good face mask is compulsory for this kind of stuff & if you can hook a vacuum cleaner to the router so much the better - some jigsaws will do this too. Alternatively, get the hand tools out if it's a one-off. Japanese Pullsaws and razor-sharp chisels & planes create a fraction of the mess! Pete.
