Breaking a string at a gig - has this happened to you?

Never. There, that's put the Curse of Murray Walker on it. Best make sure I've got a spare set in the gigbag from now on. -
Playing bass wearing black silk gloves - for BETTER TONE

Works at least as well as boiling & you don't get any small rusty bits....... G.
Beware... Don't leave them in meths much longer than overnight, 24hrs max. Meths absorbs moisture from the atmosphere & once it has your strings will go rusty. I'm wondering if Turps will work. Anyone? Bit skint at the mo, but when things are on an even keel, I'll investigate. Pete.

what is the best book or dvd to lurn bass from
Bloodaxe replied to scottaylor's topic in Bass Guitars
Might be worth checking out your local Adult Education courses as well, especially with summer now looming. Could be you can get something suitable for free (or very little). Pete. -
That's weird. Does it play back on your phone? Has it recorded at 48Hz or something?
Hopefully all sorted now. Pete e-mailed it to me & it looks like his 'phone recorded it at 16-bit 8kHz mono. Quick conversion to 44.1kHz seems to have sorted it. P.
Good list of Blues classics there, can I add: Further On Up the Road (have only heard the Gary Moore version on Blues Alive) Hoochie Coochie Man - Muddy Waters The Welfare (Turns its back on you) - Robert Cray
Hoochie Coochie Man is compulsory (along with its variants I'm A Man and Mannish Boy). Robert Cray might be a bit "modern" though Here's the original Bobby Bland version of Farther On Up the Road: Very different from Mr Moore's interpretation & vitally important get the stops right otherwise it descends into chaos (I speak from experience & will no longer play it with one particular guitarist). Robin Trower's take on it is worth a listen too. P.
If you were auditioning for a blues band, what songs would you have to know to be taken seriously?
Ask them for their set list & go off & learn it. A few goodies to have in the bag if they're not in the list: The Thrill Is Gone - BB King (has a surprise 6th) Tore Down - Freddie King, loads of others (stop-tastic!) Crosscut Saw - Albert King (Rhumba) Let The Good Times Roll - Louis Jordan, BB King & others (II-V-I turnaround) Stormy Monday - T-Bone Walker (straight I-IV-V), and The Allman Brothers (not) - you'll be needing both. Bright Lights, Big City and Baby, What You Want Me to Do - Jimmy Reed Key To The Highway - Clapton amongst loads of others (I-V-IV) Killing Floor - Howlin' Wolf, Jimi Hendrix (aka The Lemon Song off Led Zep II) My Babe - Little Walter (Swinging I-V-IV verses, Walking II-V-I on the solo) Boom Boom - John Lee Hooker.
Most blues standards use a walking I IV V pattern, using a minor pentatonic or blues scales. I dont think theres any need to learn specific songs as they mostly are based around this.
Whilst largely true, this tells me that you're probably not a Blues player. Mystery Train - Elvis Red Hot - Billy Lee Riley Try those two as straight-8 I-IV-V's & see what happens
If the OP means blues songs where the bassline 'IS' the song (in essence), then compositions like Born Under A Bad Sign are the way to go. There are a myriad of other examples, but my brain is tired
Good call that man. Crops up a lot & it's not one to approach blind, very quirky structure. Pete.

think i have a problem with my truss rod!!!
Hi Guys, need some advice,... i suppose i cant grumble the bass only set me back £650.00 but want it to be right :- a.beacause i want to feel comfortable about the bass b.if i want to sell it i the future i wont sell it with a any issues any thoughts? pictures show the nut/rod before and after delivery. kindest regards. ziggy.
I take it the third pic is the truss rod now, today, as it is? It doesn't look nice at first glance, but fill us in a bit more: 1: Is the truss rod nut just flapping about in the slot all loose? 2: If it is, with the bass upright (on your lap, say), lift the truss nut up (i.e. push it back into the neck) - does it feel like there's any weight on it? (A truss rod is about 2 foot of steel bar, but the nut weighs almost nothing, so you should be able to judge if the bar is loose or if it's just the nut that has become detached.) 3: If the answer to 2 is "I reckon it's just the nut come off somehow", can you tighten it with an allen/hex key? Or does it just go round & round and then plop back out again? 4: What's the current relief like? Any chance of a photo looking down or up the neck? 5: You %^&&£$?!! well can grumble! If I'd pulled the trigger on "only" £650 & found a problem like that, the air would be blue, the builder's phone line would be red hot & he'd need fireproof ears. As it's from Bulgaria, you may just have to lump it though. A shame (possibly), it's a very pretty thing. Pete. -
Levy's stuff is good, I have an old M4 plain leather one that prevents my "granitewood" TSB from gypping my shoulder. This is bugging me... I'm fine with the overall structure but it's the signature hook & the little brassy links that have it in for me. Here's a youtube take of the studio cut off the album of the same name: Notation is fine too. Can't read for toffee, but it'll encourage me! BTW if there's anyone who doesn't think this is a killer tune, I'd suggest seeing a Doctor... or possibly an Undertaker. Pete.

Anybody know any bass guitar teachers in Cornwall?
Bloodaxe replied to cameltoe's topic in Tutors Available
I'm wanting to brush up my technique, have someone assess my left and right hand positions, and generally make me a better player all round! A lot of teachers near me are guitar players who also teach bass. I'm not suggesting I won't learn anything off them, but for fear of being taught theory by someone who seldom picks up a bass I'd like an actual bass player, one with experience I can draw from, who can push my playing on a bit. Any ideas?
If you're anywhere near Bodmin, I know a chap... Pete. -
Nice little simple transcription, although all of the D#'s should have been Eb's. It's meant to be in C Minor
I can't take credit for the transcription, it's c/o a tab I got from 911Tabs.com & printed from GuitarPro. I'll take issue on the key though. It's meant to be in B flat Minor - That's the original & vastly superior Little Willie John recording from 1956. The Peggy Lee version (1958) seems to be in Am, whereas the Elvis take (1960) is in Cm. LWJ also recorded the first version of another great but done-to-death tune, namely "Need Your Love So Bad" (also 1956). NYLSB: & here's a bit of "Fever" as done by Keith John, LWJ's son, with Stevie Wonder: Bbmin. Pete.

Anyone ever bought a prized instrument from Cash Converters?
Bloodaxe replied to Grand Wazoo's topic in Bass Guitars
What do you think, have any of you bought a quality bass from them and were satisfied with the quality and genuinity of it?
That's my local branch (Lewisham)! Dunno where they hide this stuff, all I ever see in there is tat. Having said that, IIRC a Chris Squire Rick that was around here originated from the same branch about 3-4 (?) years ago & checked out as perfectly legit... & I bought a very poorly SB-1000 from them for £250 about 10-12 years back - that's now been butchered into a fretless. I've never sold anything to them, so I've no idea how stringent they are on that front in terms of I.D. & proof of address/ownership. Considering where that branch is, I'd kind of hope that they're quite cosy with the Law - the old nick was about 100 yards from the shop & the very shiny & enormous new one isn't much more distant. Pete. -
Always liked the look of these SB's...how do the reissues compare? Aria SB-1000RI Reissue Electric Bass Guitar The original SB-1000 swept the world with its striking looks and amazing tone and now the SB-1000RI has established a new reputation as a modern classic. Back by popular demand, this bass is fitted with the original B.B. circuit allowing you to punch through the rest of the band and make sure you are heard Top : Ash Neck : Maple/Walnut 5ply, Neck-through body, Heel-less Fingerboard : Ebony Frets : 24F Scale : 860mm(34") Pickups : MB-1E Double Coil x 1 Controls : Volume x 1, Tone x 1, Tone Select Rotary Switch x 1, Bypass Switch x 1, LED x 1 Tailpiece : J510B-4 Hardware : Gold Finish : OAK http://www.guitarandampshop.co.uk/acatalog...ass_Guitar.html
[RANT] That's stretching the definition of "Re-Issue" in my opinion. Compare the "RI" against a 1980 SB-900 (I've attempted to get them to the same scale): The bridge on the RI is a lot nearer to the edge of the body. To do that, and maintain the scale length, they must have cunningly redesigned the body. It's also wider - as well as being a conventional modern high-mass type (as opposed to the original huge lump of cast brass). That'll make it more like an SB-R/Elite with the "Eye" dot markers - narrow at the nut & with a noticable taper absent from the real thing. This may sound trivial, but it screws up the geometry of them. The original Nobuaki Hayashi (H. Noble) design wasn't broken, why Aria have attempted to fix it is beyond me. A straight re-issue (with a 5-string variant) would have made perfect sense, especially with the JT & CB "signature" angle. As it is... I wouldn't touch it with yours. [/RANT] Pete.

How does a Trace Bright Box Work Impedence wise?
Bloodaxe replied to Delberthot's topic in Amps and Cabs
If I am running an amp that is designed to go down to 4 ohms with either 2 8 ohm speakers or 1 4ohm one, how is it possible then to be able to add a Trace Bright Box or 4052h without melting the amp?
Google turfed up a fair bit of Trace Elliot bumf... Exhibit A: A not-very-good-resolution jpeg scan of the back page of an '80s TE Brochure. It's just legible & gives the following about the 4052H: Power: 200W NOMINAL Impedance: 8 Ohms NOMINAL Exhibit B however, a V-Type Manual, has the following on Page 6: (my italics)
LOUDSPEAKER CABINETS The high end frequency response of any system can be further improved by the addition of either a high frequency horn unit or a 4052H "Bright Box" These should be connected to the jack sockets on the cabinets or the jacks on the combo or amp lead. The impedance of these high frequency units can be ignored as they have internal crossovers.
Exhibit C: Page 23 of the SMX Range Manual
Adding a high frequency horn unit or 4052H “Bright Box” If you wish to improve the high end frequency response of your system, simply add one of either of these models and connect one of the jack sockets on your full range cabinet. You can ignore the impedance of the HF horn or the 4052H, which means you can use them in addition to two cabinets already connected to the output stage of any TRACE ELLIOT bass amplifier. You can also add one of these units to a combo amplifier by connecting it to the combo extension speaker output (N.B. except the 715, BLX80 and BLX150 models which have no extension speaker facility).
So there you have it... it's 8 Ohms but Trace Elliot say you can disregard it. Pete.
