1.
I've got one of those which come in both single and double versions (as shown on the ebay link) - the single one on the bass looks the same to me
Thanks for that ... I think you might have missed the one in the other side of the bridge though (see picture 4) .
 2. Price tag on it is £995. Originally I thought, for a carved bass, that's good ... now I know about the repairs, not so sure.
 3. Just found out that the bass was allegedly bought in Germany for 2,500 Euros, and sold by the player at the end of the tour because he didn't want to transport it home. I still have no idea if it's Chinese or German made. However, it's looking a bit less like the bargain I thought it was, since the neck has cracks in 3 places, all of them well-repaired. I'd still welcome anyone's views on this bass.
 4. Question 3) How do I tell if I'm looking at a german one or a chinese one ? BTW, the pickup maybe be a cheapie --> LINK
 5. I've played this very bass, and I'd go along with it being a good bass for the money. In fact, if I had a need for a good-value, fretless 5 right now, this would be it.
 6.
my plan is to pick up a cheap 5 string asap just so i don't go completely cold turkey. But a bass of this quality needs to be played, i hope Mike seriously digs it.
Can't believe you're selling your last bass. If you want a cheap 5 you might look out for a Squire Precision Special. (I think that's what they're called). Precision shape with two 'Jazz' pickups. Got mine for £85 off flea bay (though £100-£120 is more the norm) so that on the rare occasions I fly with a bass I don't have to take an expensive one.
 7.
There's been a guy selling something that looks very similar on eBay recently for about a tenth of that value.
That does look very, very, similar. Thanks.
 8. Can anyone identify this pickup for me ? It's been sold with a bass and is allegedly a £300 pickup. I know no more. Thanks, Andy
 9. I've just seen a Gewa fully carved bass for sale. Allegedly a german one, though apparently its a german brand that imports some of it's products from China. Comes complete with gigbag (sounds like a substantial one) and a pickup (allegedly a £300 one, though I've no idea of brand). Seems in pretty good nick, though the edges of the front and back table show a little wear where it's been laid on it's side. Sounded nice, and loudish, to me (on the quick play I've had so far), but I don't have a quality bass to compare it to so could be wrong on both those. Question 1) Is this a reasonable "my first carved bass" ? Or more likely to be a waste of money ? Question 2) What do you think I should be paying for such a package ? Thanks, Andy
 10.
It's definitely an Energy model. The Eclipse had the front pickup in the "hotspot" in the middle of the body, whereas the Energy had the pickup about an inch off the graphite neck join.
Well, I couldn't tell you if it's an Eclipse or Energy but I definitely CAN tell you that the pickup placement on this is identical to my Eclipse 5 Ltd. The gap from end of neck to neck pickup is exactly the same as the gap between neck pickup and bridge pickup on both my bass and on this (so far as I can tell from the photograph) However, Eclipses were made with more than one pickup config. See HERE I could be wrong but I thought the distinction between an energy and eclipse was the arched top on the latter ? Andy
 11. Based on my experience with my own fretless 5 Mk 1, I'd back up everything said about the acoustic tone. Use status's own very reasonably priced black tapewounds and you get a lovely 'stringy' tone. Andy
 12. Mustangs have a very distinctive sound to my ear. Chris Stillwell (Greyboy Allstars and Robert Walter) uses one .. check here. (Though interestingly, it sounds like he treats it as a more conveniently-sized precision. ) Only thing stopping me getting one is that I'm pretty tied in to 5ers these days .... I am tempted though. Anyone want my DeArmond Starfire (another shortie) in trade for a Mustang ? Andy
 13.
Nowadays, in terms of bass though, you can safely assume that they are humbuckers with (at least in intention) a 'modern' tone. Seems to work out that way.
That (soapbars -> 'modern' tone) makes sense of the 'death to soapbars' type of sentiment I've seen in some corners of talkbass recently. Thanks
 14. Okay, so I know the difference between a single coil and a humbucking pickup, but what exactly is it that makes a 'soapbar' pickup a 'soapbar' ? Appearance only ? (no pole pieces, wider than a single coil). Or something technical ? (Like, say, humbucking but with vertically stacked coils ? Or hi-fi response ?) hmm ?
 15.
I suspect that if I could afford an Azola, (and the shipping charges, since they never seem to go on sale in the UK) that I might find a better bass ...
I wonder what are the chances of an Azola in the UK now and what the price is likely to be ? 16. Lovely looking bass, but it's the C extension that's caught my eye ... serious piece of technology that. Looks like the action is going to be pretty high when fingering the E string near the nut. I'm guessing it might be possible to cope with that by using both keys and fingers to hold down the string, around F or F# at least. I'd be interested in knowing more about what it's like to use that (apologies for taking this off-topic). Andy
 17.
So ... has a South East Bash been organised for this year ? (because I've searched again and still had no luck)

Not yet. Tentative PM's have started (last night)
Is there a thread about this ? Or any news ? Andy
 18.
I couldn't find details about the switch, can you tell me what it does ?
Ok, I see that's answered now.
On the day, grease your playing fingers by rubbing them on your nose (if you have a oily one) or by eating a bit of chicken " a la Jaco" (yes laugh now but you all will be trying that later on).

eeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! My favourite link from the thread ... anyone want to try this on upright ?

 25.
Kudos to you, it looks very good considering the initial state of the beast.
Same from me. Have to say, when I saw the first pictures, I thought, what the **** are you going to be able to do with that. I also cringed when I read the bit about removing the end of the fingerboard. But all in all, given the starting point, I think you have a good end-result.
