5 string fretless Cort, Steinberger-a-like!
BigBeatNut replied to saxobass's topic in Basses For Sale
Was it originally a 4 string as the split pup only has 4 pairs of pole pieces?
That sounds plausible, based on the picture of the 4-string cort and the (to my eye) uneven spacing on the bridge and string retainer. I'd have thought that a 4 -> 5 conversion would not have been easy though ... either sourcing or making parts. -
And to give an alternative (possibly philistine) perspective - {SNIP} ...(Puts pith helmet on and ducks below parapet).
I think that critique is fair so far as this piece goes. While most of the stuff I play and listen to gets characterised as 'jazz' by other people, I would never characterise myself as a 'jazz fan' precisely because of stuff like this. This is the kind of stuff (though an extreme example) that I think gives a lot of people a negative perception of Jazz. It has to be said ... the musicians demonstrate an INCREDIBLE level of skill that I couldn't hope to obtain if I lived for another 100 years and practiced 8 hours a day. But to be honest I don't think I want to. I can't detect in that video any of things that make music meaningful for me. Certainly no groove, also no melody, barely discernable harmonic movement, and it's hard to tell where the 'one' is at times. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Andy

I'll try and get a few pictures of it up in the next day or so.
Sounds like a good plan Can bring the Electro 1 for old times sake if you like Andy

Verrrry nice. Just about perfect looks for me and 19mm spacing too. The only thing I could think of that might make it even more perfect would be a 2nd mag pickup. We must arrange that A/B session with my RA Deep 5 some time when the weather is a bit less of a pain. Andy
What does the Allegro sound like?
Sound is great. Bigger volume unplugged than you'd think with that small body, it could be that I'll get around to miking it and mixing that sound with the piezo. Pickup sound is also good, very db-like to my ears, to a much greater degree than any other EUB I could get my hands on (includes various NSs, Triumph, Eminence and others). Has a tendency to a piezo 'quack' when practising using headphones, so it's possible it may not record well, but that sound has never been evident when playing through a PA or my markbass combo. Here's Brian Bromberg playing his -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmlF1FAvoDY I suspect that if I could afford an Azola, (and the shipping charges, since they never seem to go on sale in the UK) that I might find a better bass ... but for now, and for the limited use it gets (it rarely goes out) I'm very happy with it.
I think it would be hard to hide them completely without refinishing of some kind. If you are serious, I can find out.
Sorry ... despite being a Lakie fan, I'm finding it hard to justify another ... so that was mere idle speculation. If I find myself at the bass gallery in the next few days (which is quite likely) I might try and find out and post the answer here for anyone interested. Andy
FWIW it wasn't me that put the screws in !
Yeah, bit of a shame that ... though a bonus if you're an MM fan I guess (?). I wonder how much it would cost to fill and try to hide those holes. Would it involve a re-fin ? and how effective would it be ? Andy

Love to be able to help out your Dad, but while I've got a use for an acoustic (and a fretless 5-string is right up my street) , that's well outside my budget. Hope it goes to a good home .... have a bump on me. Andy
Hmm this has got me thinking, does anyone here use Flatwounds on a Status graphite neck? if so does it take away the clankiness that the roundwounds bring? or would halfwounds be better to give a little bit more clarity?
Tried both Labella's (DTF) and Status halfrounds on my Eclipse Ltd (fretted), was never happy with either. Flats didn't seem right, and as far as I remember they didn't tame the clankiness. OTOH my S-1 fretless came with status halfrounds that I liked so much they stayed on for years ... only recently swapped them out for rounds, which I also like. I think you have to experiment for yourself. Andy
