... anyone here planning on going ? I'm thinking about taking my BSX Allegro (EUB) if there's any interest. Do you think there's there any chance I could get to play an upright strung with gut or fake-gut (e.g. weedwacker) strings while I'm there ? Andy (Ah, just checked, and I noticed two double basses on the gear list )

Never been to one of these before, but planning on this one, and bringing some of my gear. However I've got little idea of the format, other than the idea being to get an idea of other peoples gear. So can somebody fill me in ? Does everyone bring gear, or is there a strong contingent of lookers only ? Do you just set up in your own area and stay put, or do people move around a lot leaving their gear on display ? And are there opportunities for trading and buying/selling ? FWIW, I'm thinking of bring my Markbass combo (1x12) , together with Status Eclipse 5 Ltd (possible trader), Rob Allen Deep 5 (to show it off) and if there's anyones interested in seeing it, my BSX Allegro upright. If there no interest, I'll bring something else more easily transportable, Status S1 fretless 5 (unlined, a beauty and a keeper) Oh, and I'll update the list once I know more about the format and I've firmed up what I'm bringing. Have you considered making temporary markings ? E.g. sticky labels from a stationers, should be pretty easy to mark up at least 3, 5, 7, 9 using the tuned strings as reference. That should get you oriented, there then are some exercises that are specific to getting you shifting to the right locations. If you can get by with temporary markings for a while till you have the muscle memory, then you'll have the advantage of being able to play (or at least make a start on) other peoples unmarked basses. Some U.S. guys have talked about flying with an EUB in a (hard) golf-case .... that might however be EUBs that have removable necks such as BSX or eminence. I know you can get hard cases for flying golf clubs from eBay. You may also want to look at standard flight-case manufacturers such as SKB (and there must be more) for cases for mic-stands ... I know I was looking out a solution once and that looked like an option to me at the time. Andy

SOLD: OLP MM3 Stingray 5 String (Plus Gig Bag) £135 or TRADES???
So to ask the big question, what is the string spacing?
Well, I didn't measure it, but I'm used to 18-19mm on a 5er and it felt too tight to me. I think James' approximate measure (taken while we were on the phone) was 65mm centre B to centre G, making it a bit over 16mm centre-to-centre. James may be able to do do a more accurate measure now. Andy -

It may seem like a minor thing to some...
2 months on a DB are you're doing gigs ? wow...good going !
I'd second that ... I've had an EUB and a DB in the house for close on 2 years ... so far only the EUB has been out in public and the most I've done at a gig (as opposed to a jam) is two numbers ... Andy -
That's got me interested. Not sure you're interested in what I have for trade though ... A Status Eclipse Ltd (5er fretted) see my sig for links to pics. Also Status Electro fretless but I'm fairly certain that's not your thing. What's that switch amongst the controls ? Single coil / humbucker ? Andy

Nice tune ... reminds me ... there's someone on talkbass who's a real Volante fan and I'm pretty sure it's Mike Mike Arnopol ... I've certainly seen other videos from that gig. About the Volante ... I've seen the odd pic here and there, but I can't figure out if it has a sound box ... do you know ? Sounds pretty good any way ... and that tune is a nice showcase for the bass. Andy
Great list!
It is indeed a great resource. However I think the OP wanted some guidance on what people generally reckon to be good pickups, and the list has probably added to the confusion more than it's helped Andy
.... From other pickups I've done this to it shouldn't have any effect on the sound. Failing that, thin rubber (cycle inner tube?) should guarantee a slip free result.
The Palatino modders on TalkBass use cycle inner tube under the bridge deliberately for its muting effect (or is it damping ?) effert so some caution needed there ... cheap experiment though.
Im afraid im already sorted on the 5 string front. The only thing id possibly consider in a trade is a 4 string Jazz to be honest. The ramp is just fitted with double sided sticky tape as recommended by Overwater themselves. I can take a picture without the ramp if you want?
Ok - I will need to think again (about finding the cash). No worries re pics - if you've done what overwater recommend I'm sure it's ok.
Also a bit of topic, im going to England mid august, kent london ish i think. Are there any shops over there were i could maybe play on some and get a feel for what is and isnt a good double bass.
Check out M & J Healey Violins in South London - not a huge shop, but I think there are something like 8-12 basses there. Mr Healey (can't remember his first name) was extremely helpful, sympathetic, and pragmatic when it came to repairs on my very cheap and unworthy DB. He might help point you in the right direction.
