Is 'Headless' about to come back into fashion?
Yes they're still in production, Andy. The original & best Status Rich.
Duh. Excuse me. Let me correct myself. I'll endorse the S1 Classic (bolt-on, the only option). But they appear to be not in production. Big shame. -
I've got the most stunning S2 5-string bolt-on, but no, I don't want to offload it at all... My preccciousss, all miiiine... *Cackles*! Seriously, they are a bargain. I always thought the bolt-ons would be low rent compared to the glossed neck-thru models I'd always had, but I love my 5-stringer.
You beat me to it. I'll endorse the [s]S2[/s] S1 bolt-ons too. Does Rob still make them ? The [s]S2[/s] S1 option disappeared from the status site maybe a year ago. Andy -
That's quite something! I won't even dare ask what they cost but work of that calibre doesn't come cheap!
LINK
Nah, just plain old rosewood.
Ah well ... cracking looking bass anyway ... love the all black thing and that custom feature of the mid-freq switch on the front is a bonus ... wish my 55-94D had it. Best of luck with the sale.

Well, if anyone feels like getting trendy, I'm offering up my Hohner B2AV for trade right now. See sig for details. Andy -
Review ? Hmmm ... Well it's lovely in sound as well as looks. I'm a sucker for anything that gets me near upright bass qualities in a bass guitar, hence this purchase. While I no longer believe I'm going to get a BG that really sounds like an URB, this one has more of those qualities than anything else I've come across ... it's a great organic, growly, soulful sound. I won't do the specs bit, you can get that from the RA site. The two controls on the bridge are more or less what you'd expect, stacked Treble and bass on the B string side, Volume on the G string side ... with one surprise. The volume pot pulls up for what appears to be a bass boost (though I've also heard it described as giving a scoop contour) which brings out the bloom nicely. Rob apparently decided to stop building these in, I don't know why. I haven't opened it up yet but apparently in the control compartment there's a trim pot for treble. Sounds like a passive roll-off from the what the booklet says. The neck is chunky in a nice way. Action is (apparently) as low as Rob get it without compromising the sound. The bass is actually smaller in the flesh than you might expect from the pictures on the website, not sure why. So it's substantially smaller than a Guild Starfire or Gibson semi, though still larger than a Fender 'P'. It mostly been played at home, but the one occasion it's been out so far I was knocked out with the sound. In that context, a blues jam, it was a more than adequate substitute for an upright, much more so than you'd expect from the sound through headphones. I guess I do need to say something about specs. Body: Alder/English Walnut. Neck: Walnut/Ebony. Strings: La Bella 760m. Not sure what else to say. It's an absolute joy to play (comfortable, light), and I'm looking forward to using it on gigs. Fire questions at me if you want to know more. Andy
That's beautiful, how long did it take to be built ?
I couldn't tell you, I didn't get it new. I'll try and post some pics later and a bit of a review, since there seems to be some interest in this one

I can't believe I didn't post a pic here as soon as I got it. Here you go ...
I'm sure he could do an ebony board Electro. Drop him a line or give Status a call on Monday
Hmmm ... I'm sure he could, but I wouldn't know quite what it was going to sound like till he finished. I'm sure there are other luthiers out there who could offer the same. What I do have in the back of my mind, however, is an alternate neck for one of my basses, e.g. for the S1 or for the Lakland 55-94. That's a bit less of an unknown, and a bit less risk, than a completely new bass. I'd much rather than either of those find a bass I can hear, that makes me go 'That's the sound I have in head'. Andy
Both superb basses, I love the Electro.
The electro is a super bass, and honestly, only a hairs-breadth difference between it an the Rob Allen Deep 5 I've just got. I paid a lot of money for that hairs-breadth. They're so close it doesn't make much sense to keep the electro. On the other hand, it occurs to me that an ebony 'board Electro-3 might well meet my requirements for a fretless 5. Did Rob ever make one, or are they all either rosewood or else phenolic ? Andy
Electro(-1) And Eclipse Ltd
Okay I'm now officially putting these up for trade. Need to thin the herd. I have very specific wants though ... must be 5-string, fretless and unlined with and ebony fingerboard. I think it's unlikely to be a Status therefore, so I'm just posting here because of what I'm offering up as trades. My 'wanted' posting is HERE. If you do have a Status with an ebony fingerboard that you want to trade, I'd be interested to hear about it. You might try offering me cash for these, but I'll let you know in advance it'll need to be an offer I can't refuse. I'd really much prefer to trade one or more of the basses for something like, oooh, I don't know, say an F-Bass BN5F or Lakland 55-94 fretless. Andy

Lots of options mentioned on this thread. I think the Corellis came out as good quality AND cheap. Andy
