If the black box gives you a bad report for driving late at night ... ... and it is also known for marking you badly if you frequently change direction at normal driving speeds (which could be indicative of weaving about on a fairly straight dual carriageway, but is actually quite normal behaviour on twisty B-class country roads) ... ... then it's high time those damned insurance ripoff merchants got a bollocking and started to understand what driving in the real world is like, and the difference between what is dodgy/unsafe behaviour and perfectly normal. I am not surprised that people drive without insurance. I was once told that musicians get stung for a premium not because they carry expensive kit (the kit isn't insured by the car insurance anyway), and not necessarily because they're always stoned or drunk, but because they (wait for this) might give a lift to somebody famous and if there's a crash and the famous person goes through the windscreen they'll sue for a lot of money for the facial disfigurement! This "explanation" for ridiculously high premiums for musicians was given by an insurance salesman with a completely serious straight face to a self-employed guitar tutor. Draw your own conclusions.

Most godawful tuning you've been asked to play in
Oh yeah, probably should mention doing some stuff in the Octobass range. Unplugged.
I defy most peoples' speakers to reproduce that, even if the microphone could have recorded it properly to start with ! What an amazing instrument though. Not sure I've got room for one, either at home, or in the car on the way to a gig ... -
FZ = brilliant. Wish I had more of his EllPees. Joe's garage is still a favourite.
I'll solve that for you right now - GAS and common sense are complete binary opposites and the human brain isn't able to contain both - I'm afraid it's one or the other. That is a scientific fact.
Oh well, in that case:- ES-330 ES-175 Top Spec Sibelius and Top Spec Mac to run it on, loadsa sound modules, and a fully weighted keyboard/controller Hammond B3 1959 Lester ... they just get more outrageous don't they

When this year started I thought I might have a gig on bass, so was thinking of a 2 x 10 cab to go with my 1 x 15. Now it turns out I'm more likely to be playing guitar (that's OK I've got all the gear I need for that) and doubling on keys so my first need would be for a decent keyboard combo. Whether GAS is affected, guided or moderated by such common-sense remains to be seen

I only play in standard tuning, unless I've got my cheap chinese plank with me, in which case I might tune that down by a semitone or two if someone insists upon it. Even so, I don't use drop or open tunings. It's hard enough playing when the notes are where you expect to find them so anyone who wants me to change the interval between the strings can go take a hike! -

What are you listening to right now?

Camel = one of my all time favourite bands! Wouldn't like to hear them compressed to MP3 format though. Even the highest bitrate is nowhere near Hi Fi standards. Try FLAC.
I'm starting to love this thread and soundclooud. It is great to hear what others are doing. There is a lot of talent and originality on this group.
You, Sir, are also an inspiration. I'm not about to copy you, but am seriously thinking I'd like to do some rockier grooves
I remember them. didn't they used to do something at the Crypt in Deptford?
They did. It was through that gig that they met the people who got them recorded on a "new bands compilation" LP called The Waking Dream. I ended up as their PA man and broken-equipment-fixer around that time although I never went to Deptford with them. I do remember many gigs at the Nags Head in High Wycombe though. After that I got a gig as a guitarist in a Reading-based band run by a chap who was building his own studio, and the MMB came to record in that studio for Politics of Ecstasy. Due to some cockup with record levels on the tape, a lot of the signal was below the noise floor but the record company pressed it anyway and then someone (can't remember who) refused to allow distribution, so actual copies of the LP are extremely rare, although it is possible that there is someone who's got a lot of unopened boxes of it under his bed ...

Anybody wanting to hear a mixture of Steve Hillage, Hawkwind and Gong should try The Magic Mushroom Band. No longer operating, but some nice people have put some of their stuff up on YouTube. Well worth an earhole.

Fish Rising - what a brilliant EllPee! And a spinoff from the same roots - Fantasy Shift by Here & Now

FWIW I've crewed just the once for a PA company that did an outside festival with HK kit and the quality was superb. Almost as good as my hi fi at home, but louder for the wide open space.

Tombs - wouldn't say the snare is too loud, just the rest of the rhythm section not quite as loud as it should be. Bass came on a bit stronger at around 2.30 and IMO that's where it should be. Flaws - likewise I'd say the rest of the rhythm section should come up to match where the snare is but at 1.58 the bass came on stronger which is where it should be
I've started to do a little project on the side, more atmospheric than my "normal" stuff. Where I'm primarily playing keyboard. What makes this particularly adventurous is that at the end of each day I work on a song it uploads to soundcloud almost automatically. So anyone watching will get to see the songs develop. Linky: http://www.soundclou.../serenitydepths
That's a theme worth working on and developing

Music as a force for social and political change.....
musophilr replied to Bilbo's topic in General Discussion
..others might argue that Rap isn't music and that they should just shut up!!
yes, I would TBH I don't feel comfortable with music that is always pushing a political or philosophical agenda. I think it's right that songwriters should write about things that bother them, about what they believe or think, or about things that are important to them - but after you've heard the umpteenth smash-the-system song you're thinking come on give it a break I want to be entertained! James Taylor slips a few political comments into his songs and they're often humourous (eg on the subject of money: "You can get your children to try it, you can measure your manhood by it, you can bring your enemies to their knees, with the possible exception of the North Vietnamese" - Money Game) but he's not always doing it so when he does, you don't mind it. On the other hand one side of a Billy Bragg LP would leave me thinking can't this bloke write songs about anything else? -
That principle is also true of guitar sounds. EQ them till they sit nicely in the mix and they're terrible when solo'd. Similarly you dial in what you think is a good guitar sound but when it's in the mix it tries to splat over everything else. Other threads have mentioned the bottom end of a "good rock guitar sound" bleeding all over bass territory at gigs.
