Check out Flea's tone on Blood Sugar Sex Magic, I think he used a Wal of some description on 99% of that... really thick, rubbery type sound, very different to all his other basses. Sounds great with a busted Q-Tron on Sir Psycho http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PU0Cdtzk6o

Welcome aboard! Some great influences there, I absolutely love the bass playing on Metronomy's latest album

Hohner the professional jack bass 2B
SlapbassSteve replied to Newbienew's topic in General Discussion
Interesting, that's definitely a Steinberger bridge there... I can only assume it's a later bolt-on model as the neck plate and shape of the back of the body looks legit. Most likely a previous owner loved the tone of the bass but didn't want to look like Mark King so bolted on a different neck. Impossible to say what its worth as a whole... you'd almost get more money parting it out. -
Oooooooo just a picture of the back - how very helpful of me.
Do you have any pictures of the bridge? In this shot it looks an awful lot like a Steinberger bridge with machine heads- meaning the bass has machine heads at both ends? Also it looks like a later model of the Jack as the Mk1's had EMG humbuckers, Mk2's had Jazz pickups, could it be possible Hohner made a bolt on Jack later on with PJ configuration? -

Interesting, Hohner Jack Basses are normally headless Steinberger jobbies, yet that has an Encore Precision neck- it's unique, I'll give it that! -
Just taken delivery of a Nano Bassballs from Harry, smooth transaction and a pleasure to deal with, buy with confidence!

Who pays to play other peoples misic
SlapbassSteve replied to jonunders's topic in General Discussion
I'm a bit rusty on this side of things but IIRC it should be paid for by the venue's PRS. -
I'm not usually a fan of Teles, but this is beautiful. Fantastic job!

Looks interesting, but as sliding pickups go it's all about the Westone Rail bass... http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_TfBq85K3pdo/TGKPxhA7RdI/AAAAAAAAALo/8-gwKCjPX0A/s1600/Westone+R+1.jpg

Paul Simonons Precision? I hope this ones real!!!
SlapbassSteve replied to itsmedunc's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Looks gorgeous, shame it's got the wrong pickups in it at the moment(DiMarzio's all the way!) Got to be worth aba £1000 £1500 regardless of previous owner, be interested to see what it goes for... just put a hefty bid on it myself like, however kosher the backstory... -
Looks an awful lot like a Silver Series to me. In that condition that's a great price.

Your Top 10 Favorite (not best) Bass Players
SlapbassSteve replied to Chiliwailer's topic in General Discussion
Flea. -given the choice I'd probably put him down for most of my top ten, but as that'd be a little unfair here's some more; Geddy Lee Marcus Miller Pino Palladino Mark King Steve Harris Stuart Zender Bootsy Collins Tony Levin Guy Pratt(check out his OC-2 based work on Madonna's Like a Prayer ...nuff said! ) Aye, that'll do me! -
The Squier P/J is a perfectly serviceable instrument at the low price end too, pick them up for little money on eBay. The PU's are a bit low output but as a playable instrument they are fine, had one for a year or so until I got the US deluxe.
+1 to the Squier, just recently bought one and swapped out the pickups for a Fender original '62 P and a Fender 60's RI J at the bridge. Took a bit of setting up to get the balance right but it sounds great now, some really interesting scooped tones can by found by playing a tiny bit to the lefthand side of the P pup. The sound also reminded me that Stuart Zender's Warwick was a P/J Streamer... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eo7iwlMFPrM

Upgrading a P-bass; but how much is it worth spending?
SlapbassSteve replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
I've got those Wilko tuners on both my Squiers, they overhang a bit, but as tuners they're that good I don't really mind. Main thing to check on a bass before you mod it is how well it actually resonates- play a note acoustically on what you know are a good and a bad bass, regardless of price and you'll know what I mean. If it doesn't resonate well, any money you spend would be better spent on a better bass, sometimes even from the same year/make/model. -
I've never spent more than £280 on a bass, and the ones which have stayed with me all cost £200 or less. I'd love to own a USA Fender or a real EB Stingray one day mind, but for now it's all about a bass which cost £150 and a rig which cost £1500, certainly never the other way around.
Read this. Nuff said
This book pretty much covers it for me, although I missed out on actually experiencing all that and showed up in '91. Annoyingly, for the most part my generation seem a little too busy thinking massive NHS-style glasses, those 'Hitler Youth' haircuts and Mumford & Sons are cool to worry about being remotely angry about the state of things...
As previously stated... Too quiet acoustically Too prone to feedback when amplified Certainly not better than anything else you might use instead (fretless electric, upright, P with flats) Cumbersome Unwieldy to play Delicate A pain to get a decent case for.. All of which contributed to my Ovation being sold...
+1 to all this. I bought an Ibanez AEB8 electroacoustic a few months back, and while it was nice to play it was also completely pointless due to points raised above. Additionally, it was much harder to play the solo to high ho silver lining behind my head with the acoustic then on my Jazz bass. I'm always a little suspicious of bandmates telling the bassist exactly what gear to use... I remember a gem of an ad on London Gumtree a while back requesting a bassist using an 8x10 or 2x15, no small amps, 'markbass generation need not apply'...

stringing a fretted bass with flatwound strings
SlapbassSteve replied to sprocketflup's topic in General Discussion
Do what works for you! Personally I absolutely hate flats with a passion, despite several attempts to get to like them, especially on fretless... each to their own! -
I've got one of these, a maple necked version in bright pink from Alyctes on here. The frets needed finishing a little, and I attached some block inlays and painted on some binding along with a 70's Fender logo(this I now regret, although it makes the bass look like its worth several times what I paid...), and the result was a bass to rival my Mex Precision- I even ended up using it for my biggest gig to date, playing in the main hanger at Aintree racecourse for Ladies Day of the Grand National! Stock pickups were surprisingly capable, great sound through the SVT I was using, although the colour is a little loud for some of the more 'spit and sawdust'-ish venues I play. For £49 brand new you really cannot go wrong at all, shame they don't have the metallic blue/maple one so I could knock together a Steve Harris tribute bass on the cheap...

Behringer BDI 21, these have been compared a lot to the considerably more expensive Tech 21 SansAmp VT bass on here. Does the job well but I've stopped using it so it's got to go. Comes in original packaging and even still has the pricetag from when I paid £22.99 for it in CrackConverters aba two months ago on the back. Great little DI box with a lovely overdrive tone, although it's a shame there's no mid EQ as it does scoop the sound a little- this is remedied by turning down the High and Low and boosting the gain to cut through a little better. IMHO the closest you'll get to a valve sound from a DI pedal under £90. SOLD
