That is brilliant, easily better then that other nutter down south that specified exactly what gear the prospective bassist should use in his gumtree ad. As a (reluctant)student and a pretty massive music slut, I particularly enjoyed point two. However I just got asked to autograph someone's boobs at a gig that'll pay this week's rent, so at least it's good to know that my 'incommensurable talent' isn't going to waste... ...Especially as it implies they don't get many paid gigs, which judging by their recordings hardly surprises me

Doesn't help with this that the law is pretty vague. I think it was only recently they made it legal to rip music from a CD that was bought and paid for legally, and put it on an MP3 player. Everyone with an mp3 player did it, but it was technically against the law. http://www.dailymail...er-illegal.html -if ripping from a purchased CD was technically illegal, a lot of people must've thought why not simply download it instead...

I've started paying recently since I'm now in a better position to afford to, but I remember hearing someone point out once in a debate that if you download something, it's still there after you've stolen it, as opposed to walking into HMV and lifting a CD which will have cost money to replicate and buy in as stock. 9/10 times you wouldn't have gone and bought it instead, so they aren't loosing money anywhere. 'They' being the big evil record companies, pretty sure the artists don't actually loose out as much as some of the ad campaigns would have you believe. From a 'should I buy it' perspective, you'll pay 99p tops for the song, and will easily get the money back straight away from a paid gig... plus you get the moral high ground

Worth current bid of £255 if even just the neck is kosher... be interested to see what happens here, shame there's no picture of the neck serial...

Fender US Std Jazz V for £899 at GuitarGuitar
SlapbassSteve replied to Platypus's topic in Bass Guitars
Cheeky £430 off, that ain't bad at all! -
A Jazz bass can make any sound you want.......... unless you want a Precison sound ! That's the irony.
That's true, and nowt sits in the mix better then a P... perhaps a PJ combo like the Fender Aerodyne Jazz is a better bet?
-
As far as classic is concerned, gotta be a Jazz.

Sound, cheers folks! Just seen a Jack II on eBay from the mid 90's, had no idea the model was still in production that late.
-
...Also, as far as portability is concerned they're worth their weight in gold.
-
Personally I love the look and tone of them, but that doesn't stop them being seriously uncool. Lovely sound though! They'll probably come back into vogue soon though, weren't Fenders really out of fashion when they started making headlesses in the early 80's?
-
Hi all, was wondering if anyone knew when they started and finished making these? Mine's a passive 4-string dual EMG Select humbucker model in natural. There's what looks like a serial number on a small gold sticker on the backplate, WO 200387 ...wild guess, but does the 87 hint at 1987? Gonna hazard a guess it wasn't built in 2003... also would I be right in thinking it's Korean built? Cheers!

+1 for absolutely anything with a Westone/Matsumoku badge from that era.

Gotoh 203(or 201... I forget which is the heavier one) bridges are excellent, they sound better then a Badass II IMO, but are cheaper and a bit less eye-catching, much more like the current USA bridges if you're into that style. Gotta admit I love the look of a Badass II on a jazz if you can find one for the right price though!
-
Didn't they used to charge over £400 for these? At the time I loved what Flea was trying to do but they weren't nearly as cheap as the company made them out to be, a new original fleabass wasn't a whole lot cheaper then a Mex Fender at the time. If they'd been this cheap from the get-go they might not have had to stop making them... For the money I would have at least wanted an active preamp.

'It is as good as straight out the box from a shop' Whatever. Also amazed our 'pro guitar fixer' hero doesn't know the difference between a P- and J- bass too come to think of it- that has to be an easter egg put in for our benefit surely..?

I absolutely loathe the look of those intentionally 'relic'd' things(though natural ageing can be beautiful). Completely fail to see why anyone would want one other then a (loaded)bedroom bassist or collector that wanted people to think they bought it in 'new' condition and personally wore it in...

These change all the time for me but at the moment its Tear Your Playhouse Down -Pino Jammin' in Brazil -Sun Leave That Thing Alone -Geddy Lee Last but not least, bit more obscure: Star Wars -Meco http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFBzRqdWN2w -highlights are Cantina Band section at 9:06, and the bass fills in the section that starts at 11:40 (11:47 and 12:02) are my favourite fills ever.

I've been waiting for the right moment for years. I'm thinking when I eventually get round to play Woodstock...

Personally I just like to make things as easy as possible for myself, if I'm doing 3x45s the last thing I want is an action miles off the fretboard that requires clamping rather then fretting. I use action as a way of gauging how well made a bass is too, the better a neck has been finished the lower you'll be able to set it before any frets buzz.

How long does stuff take to come from Thomann?

I've ordered a couple of acoustic guitars off there lately, both took four days. -
This just takes the P155, it's broken - bin it FFS!
It would be fine as it is, surely? It'll just show a thin crack. Is that really so bad?
+1 -One man's trash is another's bargain... beats the price of a brand new fender plate, Thomann list them at £30 -personally I'd live with the crack and keep the change -
If it's legit, that looks like an absolute bargain. I'd want some better pics though -one of the headstock would be nice for starters! And the sunburst doesn't look quite right to me either...
