I'll have that... -
I've noticed a little collective of Markbass stuff appearing in the for sale section on here all of a sudden. I remember a time when EBS was the in thing, and from what I hear back in the 80's it was all about Trace... bit before my time unfortunately that!

I've a pretty good idea how to use an amp but not much knowledge on how they work. Reading through the discussions on here about Markbass tone got me wondering- what gives an amp its particular tone? Is it just a select few components(ie diodes, resistors, caps etc, like that 'orange drop' that folks put in Fenders to upgrade them) that create a 'sound', or do they have some kind of EQ built in(the sickening levels of mids in my old Ashdown springs to mind...). Furthermore, by swapping a few cheap parts around, could I, for example, ...make my Markbass sound like an Ampeg? Ampeg tone in a Markbass combo... the possibilities are endless. Is any of that realistic or am I just thinking out loud at a bit of a tangent to reality?

Just taken delivery of a Hondo parts bass from Oli. Friendly chap, and the bass was despatched rapidly and securely- wouldn't hesitate to buy from him again Thanks!

I've always been of the view that if all people want to do is hear music they can go home and listen to a CD. I usually do my best to 'get into it' and move around like a nutter when there's a decent crowd, and I tend to find sporting a cheesy grin seems to massively improve chances with the groupies too haha! Obvs it depends a massive amount on the crowd, you wouldn't for example start doing Flea-style handstands between songs at say a wedding... Here's a fan video of my band's second encore after a particularly energetic three-setter with an enthusiastic crowd in Manchester. My playing is pretty [s]shocking[/s] loose and our voices were all shot through by this point but you get the idea!
I think Pino had an OC-2 and I wonder it thats the problem, I got a OC-3 off some fine chap on the forum but I just cant seem to get that Pino (tear your playhouse down) sound from it, what am I not doing (other than being not as as good as Mr P) wrong? its near but not right, know what I mean? any pics of pedal settings would help from OC-3 owners Thanks Guys
I've got an OC-3 and had a similar problem- however I think I've solved it by using the guitar input rather then the bass one! Settings I use are poly mode, dials from left- 3oclock -> 11oclock -> 5oclock

Lovely bass, I'd quite happily ditch fretted playing if I had one of those sat on my guitar rack! Wasn't it Jaco that called frets 'speed bumps' anyway?

I've got an ideal tone in my head I usually try to emulate, very similar to that jazz-bass-being-played-a-little-too-hard growly, burpy sound you get on a lot of Geddy Lee's recordings(Headlong Flight is the closest I've heard him get to it). Not the same but similar, hard to describe without posting some myspace recordings from my old band. Have also had a lot of fun recently trying to get Pino's sound on Tear Your Playhouse Down, love that fat 80's fretless tone...

Hi all. It's just gone 1am, and I'm looking over at my six string bass that I've recently tried(unsuccessfully) to sell. It was £120-ish new, and it failed to sell after a few weeks at £60 so it's not worth selling, however I'm not using it any more. I've been listening to a lot of Pino Palladino/John Giblin/Tony Levin lately and have always been a fan of Les Claypool's fretless playing so I'm thinking it might be worth defretting and stripping back the finish to the natural wood underneath. Would be a fun little project over the summer months to distract me from my more serious undertaking, a pair of franken-Hondo II's which I cannot discuss further on here without incurring legal action... Anyway, I've done two previous defrets so I've got a pretty good idea what to do, however there are a couple of points I was wondering about- -what tape is best to mask the neck with when removing frets/installing laquer? -what is the best way to strip back a finish, presumably just sand it with progressively thinner paper? Will update as I progress, however it currently looks like this- http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_hbb600tbk_6string_ebass.htm Will sort out a photobucket account or something for my next post so I can get some decent sized pics on here as it progresses!

Has he used those FM66's before? I used to swear by them when I was going though my MK 'phase' a few years back... -
When we first played a big Irish bar here in Edinburgh we didn't have any traditional irish songs in the set list (we were more a rock/punk type of group at the time). We gathered requests from the inebriated irishmen and women, and played those song next gig. We had to play Galway Girl 3 times in one night...
I play a few Irish places in Liverpool and Manchester. It's quite fun to see how long it is before Galway Girl gets requested, and then keep a tally during the night of how many times it's asked for. Occasionally we get asked to do some really obscure Irish folk tune that only the requester seems to know of, our usual response to that is to play something like Dakota, which tends to go down considerably better. Another little dislike of mine is when you're onstage trying to remember when a song changes to that awkward bridge-y bit and someone in the crowd comes up and just starts chatting away as if you're both just standing at the bar...

I'm by no means an expert on these basses, but for me the only tone I've ever needed to hear from them is Stuart Zender's on the first few Jamiroquai albums. Very tempted to invest in one with my next student loan...

I love the look of Strats, but give me classic Gibson Les Paul tone any day. If we're talking after about 1999 I'd have the Strat though, new Gibsons are shocking.

Hi, this is my Markbass cab up for sale. Selling as my band haven't really got space in the car to bring it to every gig, and I'd rather a cab this nice was being used! Makes a great combination with the mini CMD121 combo, as I reckon the compression horn and slightly bigger cabinet give it a fuller sound then the smaller New York 121 cabs. I'm convinced the horn sounds better then the little piezo tweeters in the CMD121P and New York models too. It's in as new condition with even the signed sticker on the front to show it's passed QC in Italy where these are made. I've moved the logo on the grille around so the logo is as seen in the pictures, this means you can stack this with a mini CMD121P combo and both the logos face the correct direction... [s]On Gumtree/Preloved for £380, but it's on offer to the BC community for £350 collected from my place in Aigburth, Liverpool.[/s] [edit] Withdrawn sorry, can't bear to part with it! Admittedly this is in spotless condition. I have a '64 Egmond Princess(think Gibson 335 shape) bass knocking about, presumably as it's even older and still working and playing beautifully it'll be worth about twice that..? Markbass disappointment..............ok, but not great.
SlapbassSteve replied to EmmettC's topic in Amps and Cabs
Used Ashdowns for a few years before weight became an issue and I invested in a CMD121P and Traveller 121H. I'd agree that the eq on MB stuff doesn't seem to do a massive amount at all, I tend to leave it flat and dial in a tiny amount of the filters(not sure the mid scoop one scoops out the 'right' mids for me though..?). They do seem quite flat sounding, but I'm used to the ridiculously over middy Ashdown mess of an amp tone so it's like going from one extreme to the other. Tonewise I try to aim for that mythical Geddy Lee J-bass DI sound, and to my ear with a cheeky bit of compression I get pretty close, especially out front. Nice to be heard and not just felt for a change! Having said all that though, after reading this an Aguiler cab is looking pretty tempting, or I'll always be wondering what it could have sounded like... -

The best bit about this fellow is that whilst he seems to barely grasp the basics of setting up a guitar/bass; he is at least kind enough as to give us a detailed account of everything he's done to it, could have done to it but didn't, and why...and then charge roughly twice market value for the effort. Good luck to the man!

Great little warmup exercise this tune! First couple of solo breaks are a nightmare to play note-for-note though, I just tend to go mental with chromatic scales, sounds close enough for me like!
