Sorry to hijack this a little... these are some of the first relics I've ever seen and really liked, absolutely amazing work! How much do they go for roughly new?

ok, where have I seen that headstock design before?

I think as dincz hinted at earlier, there's a difference between being a snob and simply not liking a certain type of music. Way I see it, at the root of it all, music is a tool for communication in a consumer-based industry, and not all of it is marketed/aimed at all of us- for example, I'd expect not many people here, myself included, would count themselves as One Direction fans, but then you could argue that this is because not many of us here are girls in our early teens(1D's target market- the people that the writers behind the band are trying to 'communicate' with) then we're not necessarily going to 'get' it. Music often has a very specific target audience(plenty of exceptions mind, before anyone says anything haha!) and if you're not in that target audience they could just as well be speaking to you in another dialect. Not liking something once you've given it a proper go isn't always a sign of being a snob; maybe it's just not aimed at you. If you don't like certain types of music, try putting yourself in the mind of the people it's aimed at and all will become clearer- worked for me when I was being forced to study electro-acoustic/acousmatic composition at uni and I realised it was mostly for pretentious arty-types with several cats. True snobbery is not even giving something that first chance, like meeting someone new and clamping your hands over your ears before they can introduce themselves; even if, had you let them, they'd turned out to be a total yoghurt anyway.
Well, in that case it would be HIS fault wouldn't it? But it's a good point. At which point does playing in a band expose you to some sort of joint liability? I certainly don't have any contractual agreements with my 'band' and there is no paperwork that defines the formal existence of our band as any sort of legal entity . . . or are such things implied somehow? When does a 'band' become a separate legal entity rather than a few individual musicians who happen to be playing together?
In my case we're set up as a Ltd. company as we turn over enough every month to make this our fulltime job(but luckily we're just under the VAT threshold so still qualify for AMPband cover)- and unfortunately if sed 'drunken whopper'(we've dealt with a few- one fell over backwards onto our stage once and caused around £200 of damage to a ukulele and our banner) were to say fall over and pull one of our speakers down on top of him/herself for example, they'd be in a position to sue us(what an age we live in ) as a company for leaving the speaker in a position where they could fall over and bring it down on top of themselves. Of course it'd be entirely their fault, but they could argue that we weren't sensitive to the fact that there would be people about under the influence around and therefore didn't cover everything in bubble wrap etc...

God Only Knows......ain't that the truth?
SlapbassSteve replied to BetaFunk's topic in General Discussion
For me the best bit is how Dave Grohl really seems rather embarrassed to be there, surrounded by tacky school play-esque lightning bolts to show that he's the rock singer. As for the rest of it, I'm amazed it's not a leak of this year's DebenhaM&S xmas advert. It's just overproduced to a point of utter blandness. -
+1 for AMPband. As my band have got more and more weddings and corporate stuff we've had to provide more and more copies of PLI certs. Also it's great peace of mind in case some drunken whopper knocks over one of our speakers onto a nearby Ming Vase or Bugatti Veyron

Brazilian girl sent home trying to see Level 42 in UK
SlapbassSteve replied to blunderthumbs's topic in General Discussion
Very strange, something doesn't really add up here, I can't believe UK border controls would be that harsh... also her Facebook/twitter saying she's 23 doesn't mean she is, and if she was like 13 and here on her own that would look a bit odd(for a start would she even have been old enough to get into the gig..?) On the flipside, I'm 23(massive L42 fan incidentally, rather jealous of my younger brother getting to see them in York) and going to Brasil on my own in January to meet up with my girlfriend and hopefully play a gig or two, I very much doubt I'll get similar treatment at customs there. I think there's a lot more to this than meets the eye, it's very easy to jump to conclusions over this kinda thing. -
Ahhh, slapbass... I've not had a chance to do this in ages, it's not easy on a Kala U-Bass haha! I think it's mostly been covered already here- start slow and simple, get the basics right and slowly build it up while listening to all the good stuff(Level 42, RHCP, Primus, The Reddings, Parliament-Funkadelic... Also for something more obscure check out an album called Force of Nature by Sun, it's funk heaven!). For me personally, this book here(http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Red-Hot-Chili-Peppers-A-Step-By-Step-Breakdown-of-Fleas-Bass-Style-and-Techniq-/161428901122?pt=Non_Fiction&hash=item2595e98d02) and a pair of outstanding teachers(Dave Lowe and John Dover) were also a massive help... just be very patient and keep at it! I'll leave you with this tune off the Sun album I mentioned, it's pure funky bliss https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Sw9mCRjhlM

Beautiful, Peavey basses are brilliant. I played a T-40 once, and I reckon if it got in a fight with a tank I wouldn't fancy the tank's chances... I'd imagine the T-20 is similarly hefty?!

Anyone play a stack-knob jazz bass?
SlapbassSteve replied to sblueplanet's topic in General Discussion
Legend goes that Jaco swapped out his for a regular version because he preferred the tone, but frankly I'll be amazed if there's much difference at all. My brother has a 62RI Jazz and I can't say there's anything special about it compared to other Jazzes I've played tone-wise as a result of the stacked knobs(though needless to say it sounds amazing). -

Down from 20 or so when I was in college, to just six... there's a weird correlation between playing more and more since I've been playing bass for a living, and selling all my spare basses... I think the more I've been playing, the more I've realized which basses I actually need and which ones are just nice to have around... or perhaps in other words it was basses or rent haha!

The Squier vintage modified bass is the best looking(if you're into Fender like me), but the 'ebanol'(plastic) fretboard is something I utterly despise, it sucks all the life out of the tone... I'd sooner have a real fretboard that I have to sand down a little every year or so. The company 'Vintage' make an Icon series Jazz bass which is done up to look like Jaco Pastorius' bass of doom, the headstock looks a bit odd and the relic'd finish on the body feels cheap, but to me personally it's the best playing and sounding fretless bass about for within £150-200 mark. Anything with a Westone, Yamaha, Cort or Ibanez badge is well worth a look too!

Thanks all!
How do you rate those red strings vs the regular black or white ones?
I much prefer them! They're a bit more expensive but the sound is tighter and more focused, and the feel is more like an old set of flats

I reckon everyone is 'born to be' anything they want, so long as they have enough time to practice, and want it enough to use sed time practicing! I'm a lefty but play right-handed, simply because when I started playing the only bass I could afford with my paper round was a righty- so I forced myself to learn that way. I spent my first few years of playing bass practicing 6-8 hours a day... never in my life have I wanted anything so much! Eight years later and I play bass as my full-time job, so it turned out to be a great investment!

Thought I'd have to share this here as I'm jolly proud of how it turned out! I've been in a professional working band in Liverpool over a year now and we've only just learned a Beatles song... or several... To celebrate Matthew St festival last month we spent a day in a recording studio recording our medley, and then several days with an extremely patient cameraman filming on various locations around our beautiful city. I used my U-BASS with Aquila Thunder Red strings on the recording and it sounds pretty tasty! Thought I may as well resurrect this thread as I can't find any more recent ones! I heard about the ShortBassONE a while back via my endorsement with Aquila and finally got around to reserving one today. I believe they've only recently sorted out a UK distributor for them and they're selling like mad! Can't wait to try it out, my main gigging bass is a U-BASS and I'm intrigued to compare the two... I really love the Red series bass strings so if the bass is designed around them it should be pretty impressive!

Ibanez Jet king bass, like this one; http://www.gak.co.uk...tkb300-wh/31194 Mine's been a bit of a resto project as it had a few parts missing and a crack at the top of the neck which is now fixed(still visible). It's all original and now has a retro Italia gig bag included. I used it at a gig in Rubber Soul for the Matthew St festival last weekend, where it played and sounded amazing! Unfortunately I'm having a serious clear out to raise money for travelling in January so as it's not really my thing it needs to go. These are showing as around £270 new, and I want to get back the money I've spent getting parts to fix it(missing bridge saddle alone cost £12 imported from the USA) so I'm looking for £200 posted or £180 collected from central Liverpool.

Hofner Violin Bass, it's an Ignition series so made in Indonesia, however is of extremely high quality compared to all the other Violin basses going under around £400 or so... plus it's a real Hofner! This is in great condition and I've tastefully covered the tacky writing on the truss rod cover over with removable black tape, and set it up low with D'Addario chrome flatwound strings for the most authentic tone possible. Additionally I've replaced the tacky stock knobs with Gibson style ones which suit the look a bit better. I'll include the originals and x1 genuine authentic vintage German Hofner knob in sale. It sounds utterly fantastic and it far easier to play than any real 60's violin bass would have been. Mine also comes with a fitted hardcase. Looking for £220, postage is an option for £20 extra, otherwise collection from Liverpool city center.

My record is a 1986 Japanese Fender Precision for £99 because 'it looked a bit ropey'. Fixed it up(new nut, new strings, new bridge, good polish and setup), kept it for six months, sold for £450 as I preferred my MiM and needed a new laptop
