So I'm after some timber to make a nice stand for my U-Bass. Where's the best place to source a decent priced bit of fancy mahogany these days? I remember going to a local timber yard with my Dad down in Haywards Heath when I was growing up down in the South, but a few years have passed since then and I'm currently based in Liverpool/Manchester. Do I still need to find a decent local timber yard or is there some kind of 'woodBay' that I've missed? While I think about it, is eBay any good for this? Cheers in advance folks!

Radio 4 series about bassists. Really?????????
SlapbassSteve replied to Panamonte's topic in General Discussion
I love Radio 4 and I love bass, so this sounds promising! -
Anyone use any of the stomp box bass drum gadgets ?
SlapbassSteve replied to tonybassplayer's topic in General Discussion
I've used a Logarhythm too, it was good but I had problems getting a consistent sound and you have to be careful about what kind of shoes you are wearing to get the best sounds from it... nowadays for band stuff our banjolele player uses just the 'brain' and kick drum from a Roland leccy drum kit and it sounds huge! -
Sold a Yammy to Simon this week; great communication, fast payment, and a great guy to deal with. Many thanks!

Lovely piece in The Echo about our work with St Vincents, shame it makes us sound like we're still at or are in any way affiliated with (a very embarrassing) university though http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/whats-on/music-nightlife-news/ukelele-orchestra-visually-impaired-launched-7070170#.U2YYzTOFWlN.twitter

anybody else find jam sessions boring?
SlapbassSteve replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
Good drummer=good jam, regardless of whether the guitarist thinks he's Hendrix or not... just forget he's there and lock in! -
Yesterday, along with Bernie Hollywood OBE and St Vincent's School in Liverpool we formed the world's first visually impaired ukulele orchestra. Bernie had managed to raise enough money for 20 decent ukuleles for the kids to learn on and we went into the school to perform in an assembly, hand out the ukes and talk business with regards planning the venture. It was one of the most heartwarming mornings of my life and I can't wait to get properly stuck in with teaching them to play! Here's our Mikey with some of the kids- And four of us rehearsing beforehand in the chapel area... And finally, a short video from the performance which speaks for itself- https://www.facebook...&type=2 Watch this space!
That's rather underwhelming. I was hoping for this.
Now that's more like it!

Anyone using a stand to play while stood up?
SlapbassSteve replied to Jezyorkshire's topic in Accessories and Misc
Get a Kala U-Bass or similar! Not the same as a real bass I know, but they weigh nothing, take up no space and can be made to sound pretty close to a P-bass with flats if you have access too a decent EQ -
Sorry to hear that you two aren't getting along
Me too... it's annoying really as it's such a great bass! How're you finding the Westone? If I can't get hold of a four-string BB soon I think I'll persevere with this, if I can properly get used to the extra string it'll be the last 5-stringer I'll ever need, it absolutely runs rings around the 5str mexy Jazz I had recently failing that I hear you can tune these to have a high C?

I've been a bit quiet here for a while, so here's my latest GoPro Basscam offering, footage of Ukebox's Arctic Monkeys medley from O'Neils in Liverpool on last Friday, April 18th. My new Mahogany U-Bass is currently out of order(dodgy input came out of nowhere the other week, and a huge crack around the edge of the body that appeared again out of nowhere pretty much as soon as I bought it... not impressed on a bass that cost me £420 new so I've sent it back for repairs.) The upshot of all that is I'm using my 'real' basses at the moment, this vid features my Yammy BB415(available in the for sale section, folks, I want a 4 string version of the same bass ) instead and it looks and sounds pretty darn cool if I may say so. Plenty more of these coming soon, one of the lads in the band has been editing all the footage I've been getting into a massive montage for our YouTube channel, watch this space! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HILPB4ZKDo

Flea set to release his autobiography!

When's this due out? Can't wait to get hold of a copy -
That's done well to last this long, JH's day off?

I got this beauty in a trade from MoJo just yesterday. I'm utterly loathe to move it on so soon, but despite having fallen in love with the bass, it's sound, and the way it plays, I just cannot get on with 5 string basses. So, this is up for grabs. Ideally, I would like to swap for a four string version of the same bass, however sale is an option too. It's yours for £220 posted, or £200 collected from Liverpool. I played two gigs with it last night and got some GoPro footage at one where you can clearly hear how amazing this bass sounds- I'm editing it down currently but will post here when it's done.

Appearance of you and band on stage - clothing opinions?
SlapbassSteve replied to Diablo's topic in General Discussion
So many rock/function bands here! My current band was formed while the banjolele player and I were involved in a messy divorce from our previous, a generic pub rock covers jobby. Thus, and now for something completely different... Works a treat in bars we play, and needless to say it needs no adaption for weddings, functions etc... I've done the tshirt/jeans/converse thing plenty but nothing suits me like a suit haha -
Things I would have given for a bass of that quality for that little money when I started playing(and this is only eight years ago mind!)... I remember even in 2006 the cheapest bass I could find was a Boston P copy for £60 which was totally unplayable until I taught myself how to level the frets with knife-sharpening oilstone I'd nicked from my Dad's shed. £87 for a bass like that? Brilliant!

Two realisations I've had about Ibanez and Yamaha recently
SlapbassSteve replied to Kiwi's topic in Guitars
Ibanez make some nice stuff. I had an dark red/purple Artcore bass in for a setup the other day and it was a stunner! Was amazed to see them for only £230 new on the internet, I'd have priced it much higher from the quality.
