The piano playing is overtaking the Bass playing.?
SlapbassSteve replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Interestingly I started off playing jazz piano before switching over to bass... I half wonder if I'll go back one day? -
I had always thought that the Boss RC series was the don of loopers; but I've never had the cash to try one properly so instead I've owned a couple of Akai Headrush E2s. Good pedals(indecently, I've currently got one for sale ) but the let-down for me was that it only had enough memory for about 23.8 seconds, not long enough for a full chord progression if I wanted to just noodle along to some blues chords.

Selling my U-Bass Rumbler as I play in a ukulele band for a living and am upgrading to a more expensive model. It's about three months old and has already been used to record a single for Everton In The Community and played to 40,000 people at Goodison Park, along with 3/4 gigs a weekend + busking and rehearsals since I bought it new in December, so I can testify for its sound and build quality! It's laminate mahogany with an active 2-band Kala Preamp and Aquila Silver Rumbler Strings, and even has a trussrod(although it's not really needed). If you're a bassist and have never used a U-Bass before allow me to explain why you would want one of these, even if you're not in a ukulele band- 1) It's tiny! This thing even meets carry-on requirements for most airlines so you can take it on holiday in your hand luggage! 2) It weighs nothing! Before I switched to U-Bass, gigging 2/3 times a night three days a week(well, it was around xmas so we were super busy!) was really taking its toll on my back and shoulders, this thing weighs less than David Cameron's conscience so half the time you don't even notice it's there. Back problems gone! 3) IT LOOKS COOL! People at every gig will ask you how on earth a big ukulele can make all these PHAT bass sounds, and as we know ukuleles are having a bit of a popularity surge at the moment so bonus points there Feel free to ask any questions! Price is £230ono including postage

Bottom line here is that at the precision was aimed at guitarists so that they could lay down the bass as another feather in their cap, so to speak- the design was based on the Fender Telecaster; it was a bass guitar. As we all know, it was called the Fender Precision bass because the frets allowed guitarists to play basslines without having to learn upright bass technique or finger positions. Handily, players found it could make a pretty good impersonation of a double bass too, so perhaps nobody saw the need to make it sound further like one by removing the frets.
I've decided against this guitar. I've tried a couple now and in the final analysis, the neck is too wide for me. On both guitars there have been a couple of dead spots on the G string. It might be best to save up and get something even better.
Better... ...or, dare I suggest it, cheaper? http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_jb_40fl_sb.htm There's a lot of love for Harley Benton stuff on here, and for a £108 bass it's nice to know the Wilkinson hardware alone on this would cost around £50-60 bought separately. For me the biggest problem with the Squier is the [s]plastic[/s] sorry, ebanol fretboard, which to me lacks a lot of warmth and sounds a bit too 'snappy'. This bass would have comparable quality, an almost identical look if you dig the jaco thing, and would feel so much better to play and sound more like the real deal. Can't comment on neck width though as I've not tried the HB yet. Far as flats go, it's a sound preference thing. I personally love the sound of rounds on a fretless and don't mind buffing the neck once in a while if it means getting the sound I like from it
That is one hell of a departure from our usual threads in this subforum! And playing in front of such a huge crowd...! Love it Keep us all posted
Thanks! Will do
Yup - does that count as a Stadium Gig?
Close enough for me haha! Has to be one of the bigger crowds a U-Bass Rumbler has played to so far I reckon

Next up is footage of us performing a single we were commissioned to write for Everton Football Club which will go on general release soon(currently ironing out a few things contract-wise ) Here we are performing to around 40,000-odd people(the stadium was sold out apparently) before the home game against [s]Arsenal[/s] Aston Villa[edit- actually forgot who the other team were despite staying to watch the game...] on Febuary 1st. So here's the start of a little video thread from my adventures with the ukulele band, UKEBOX. It'll mostly feature '#BASSCAM', essentially a GoPro strapped to my U-Bass's headstock... First up is us busking opposite Primark in Liverpool ONE on January 8th. It was very cold and windy, but the video on our Facebook went on to have 6,078 views and was shared by Kala's official U-Bass page http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4vJt8Fk-_A

Fender Dimension 5 strings... this video really gives me GAS

Lovely! I'm really intrigued by these, not sure if they'll catch on but I imagine they'll be highly sought after by a cult following in a few years if they don't... -
I've used the same pair of Mackie SRM450 V1 speakers since I got into the business four years ago. I would absolutely swear by the sound for the music/venues I play, compared to passive systems I've tried. They've never let me down in any way in all this time too, only damage they've ever incurred was when the previous owner(singer in my last band)'s cat pee'd on one of them between gigs...

Stunning! I wish these had been available when I started, would have saved me a whole load of grief... that 50's Telebass looks beautiful as well!
