1.
£2301. Blimey. Hopefully it won't need a new neck or anything major! Was the buyer a BC'er, I wonder?
Yikes! I was considering bidding and asked Wal regarding restoration and they sent a very detailed response. As you suggest major neck work would be the significant expense, and also uncertainty that the electronics worked (notwithstanding the failed pots). And it seems likely that it was a replacement (non-JG) neck. I wasn't prepared to take a chance on extra expense/wait for servicing - but congrats to the winner, hope there's nothing major wrong and they are enjoying it soon
 2.
For those of us not in the know, what is a Wal JG bass and how do they differ from a "normal" Wal?
Head over to Trevor Raggatt's excellent Wal history site for details on the JG, but also (as Chris says above) the Pro IIe, which is what this appears to be despite the JG serial: http://walbasshistory.blogspot.co.uk/p/blog-page_9226.html . The Pro IIe preceded the custom Wal and has a different preamp, without the custom's low-pass filters, but does include various boost functions. The Facebook link in the second post also has commentary from experts, and that group also has a post on another late-serial JG which is the same Pro IIe spec.
 3. BTW there's some good answers (thanks Trevor!) on the same question that I posted to the Facebook Wal group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2413094311/permalink/10155525332639312/?comment_id=10155525492604312&notif_t=group_comment&notif_id=1498836461940145

I can't see anything quite like it on the Wal History site, any thoughts welcome!
 5. Wonderful service from Geoff - he kindly agreed to a courier pickup for a Trace GP11 pre, excellent communications throughout - including a photo of the package pending pickup! - and very well packed indeed. Top marks, many thanks Geoff!
 6. I sold a Limelight Jazz to Mick: very easy transaction, friendly guy and UK sellers can deal with confidence (he is based in Frankfurt). Welcome to the world of the Basschat marketplace Mick!
 7. Bought a Vintage Fretless off Chris: absolute bargain, clearly looked after and very well packaged. Cheers Chris!
 8. Brilliant! Our singer Doug Sutherland lives in Riding Lane now, very short commute for him Cheers! Kev

 10. Welcome from West Kent, Andy! Can't go wrong with a P bass and a Rumble, looks like there are a fair few 'find band members' type sites out there now, so good luck and have fun
 11.
Cheers for all the replies guys, lots of helpful stuff here! I like the look of that Aguilar Tone Hammer 350 on ebay – looks very easily portable! Is 350 going to be enough wattage for me, through a decent-sized cab? On the subject of cabs – a few people asked – I'm planning to be either using what's in a practice room/venue, borrowing, or hiring for the time being. So playing nicely with a variety of cabs is deffo something I'm after in an amp.
The TH 350 will deliver 350w into a 4 Ohm speaker load: but half that into an 8 Ohm load. Details in the pinned 'Impedance' thread if you need it: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/135-impedance-etc/ Bass response will be improved by having the cab (1) on the floor (2) near a wall (3) in a corner, so try repositioning to taste. The ability to hear your playing will be dictated by the volume of the rest of the band, and speaker dispersion. The best cabs disperse sound better so that it can be heard from the most angles; a good single speaker cab (e.g. a 1x15") will disperse very well. Tilting the cab to point towards your ears will help. You may also find you hear yourself better being further away from the bass cab than you may think. The high mids/treble will be what 'cut through the mix' , i.e. help you get heard, for which the TH 350 tone controls will be a great help. Finally: if you're in the volume wars, ear protectors (that still let you hear the music) are well worth considering, e.g. https://www.flareaudio.com/collections/isolate Good luck!

 15. Just bought Jamie's superb Xotic XP-1. Terrific chap who went the extra mile - in fact, extra 60 miles! - to deliver it in person. Bass was just as described and plays like a dream, and Jamie was friendly and communicative throughout. Cheers!
 16. I've just had a similar grounding issue on my P - even though the earth wire from the pot was splayed and sitting under the usual BBOT. Possibly it was the pressure of the bridge making the strands sink into the paint, and reduce electrical contact with the bridge. So I scraped back the underside of the bridge plating to expose some copper, so that I could get some solder to stick. Then I braided the earth wire, and coated it with solder, and finally soldered the earth wire to the solder on the bridge. Which fixed it
