2.
Finally got to have a fiddle with it at 8pm last night.. a bit late for using an amp (for the neighbours, not me), but really pleased with it so far. The finish is far better than I expected for the money, and the nut is much tidier than most that I have seen and nicely spaced. The only thing that mystifies me is how to get the trem arm to remain in one position - being a press in type it seems to loosen off and swing downwards after one or two presses. Having no real experience of them, I assumed that they were a screw in affair but it just pushes in. Maybe it needs a harder press! If anyone is interested, it fits quite nicely into a Hiscox STD-EBS case
Try putting yon silicon tape that plumbers use round the base. Do you need it anyway? G.
3. I've sort of fallen heir to a PA. I didn't really want it, but there you are. I can't get my bass gear & the PA into my car together - it'll need 2 runs or another car. It consists of 2 x Carlsboro speakers (2x12, horn & tweeter), stands, a 6U short case with a 2U 300x300 power amp, a 3U Peavey Dual 31 band EQ with feedback indication & an elderly 1U Yamaha FX unit and all necessary cables. I built a connector plate into a 2U case which also handles the storage of cables & there's a couple of wedges. It's a decent enough small PA for vox in small/medium venues. But I haven't a clue about 'doing' sound. Is there a 'Sound Engineering for Dummies'? G.
4. This'll cause an argument! My advice is to get an unlined fretless with the side-dots in the correct position. I've had both lined & unlined & found the lined to be a hindrance rather than a help, insomuch as I ended up playing with my eyes rather than my ears & I did not progress as fast as when I used an unlined. G.
5. OK, done the deal & have a receipt in my wallet. Just waiting for whenever the sunburst Bass VI will be delivered. It might be a while, so just as well I'm in no hurry. However, the next big question!!! Which strings? The general opinion on various forums (Fora?) is that the Bass VI doesn't really work with the originally supplied strings - a .85 E simply is too floppy. Many are saying that you need at least a .95 and many are raving about the LaBella set with a .106 E. As I'd want to use it primarily as a bass, I'd be wanting to put a set of flats on it, so, which sets are available for the Bass VI? G.
6. This was a decent band-for-the-buck machine in its day - would make a decent backup machine or home server with a big-ish drive in it - stick in some more RAM & run Win8.1 64 bit, or a decent Linux. Have a bump on me. G.
7. I bought a pair of these a couple of months ago. They are pretty elderly & the seller couldn't tell me much about them. We assumed they are 90W per side. However, I've opened them up & there's a Yamaha JA 3065 12" speaker rated at 15W & 8 Ohm and a Yamaha JA 2053 8" speaker rated at 10W & 8 Oms connected to each other via some sort of crossover. The label on each speaker says the impedence of the total cab is 8 Ohms, so the crossover must be doing something to the connection. Since I'm hooking up to a power amp producing 300W per side & these will be used for foldback, I'm pretty much going to replace both of these little speakers (they're all fine, by the way) with a single 12", 8 Ohm rated somewhere near 150W-ish. The real question is, do I throw away the crossover & do I block up the 8" hole, or do I leave it open as a vent? And as a follow-up, anyone got a suitable pair of 12"/8Ohm speakers they'd like to part with? G.
8. I bought a set of needle files to use on the bigger slots. The way I do the slots is to hold down the string at the 3rd fret & the string should *only just* clear the 2nd fret. If you tap it hard between the nut & the 3rd fret you should only just hear a click. You should just be able to slide a cigarette paper between the fret & the string - I'd say a business card is far too thick. G.
9. For me, the nicest neck I've played (all 5 strings) was a Peavey Cirrus BXP. The narrowest neck I've ever experienced is on my Epiphone EB0. G.
10. Do these Planet Waves tuners go down to a Low B? I have 2 tuners, one detects the Low B (Yamaha) - the other doesn't. G.
11. I've played 5ers almost since I started to play bass. For me, it's technique. I have a 4 - a wee Epi EB0 - and it's fun, but I'm findiing I'm bolting up & down the fretboard like a loony! I've played 5ers for so long, I prefer playing across the board. Just suits me. G.
12. Y'know, the one thing I don't need much of in my bass playing is sustain. G.
13. I don't 'do' Facebook any more - my space was hijacked & I've come out of it & have no wish to rejoin. Any way of seeing this otherwise? G.
14.
Do you mean that you are swapping the Burns for a £270 Squier Bass VI?
Pretty much. I don't play guitar much any more, so I may as well swap it for something I'd use. Also saves me the hassle of putting it up for sale. If I put it up on Ebay, I'd probably get about £400 for it if I'm lucky, so a Bass VI & case wouldn't be far away. G.
15. I was snooping about a local big(ish) music shop today & asked them about a Bass VI. They have one on order. One. So I mentioned I had a Burns Double Six snuggled up safely under the bed in excellent condition. These are going for £700 new on Ebay, so I reckon it is worth at least a Bass VI. The guv'nor wasn't averse to the idea, so I'll be taking the Double 6 to see him next week & see if we can be doing a straight swap for his Bass VI when it comes in. Fingers crossed!! G.
16. To the OP: Just a thought, have you tried putting a patch cable from FX Out to FXReturn? G.
17. I was wondering about the valve too. I have an LH500 with a 5751 in it & it's almost impossible to overdrive, so I wouldn't be too bothered about clipping. Sounds as though the signal to the power section is very low. G.
18. I remember a while back there were probs with the Artec - namely something about the outer shell earthing the electrics. This may well have been fixed as it was about 4 or 5 years ago. However, it would be quite easy to try the Artec without its outer shell just to see if there's any difference. G.
19. I had a red one of those, & I wouldn't mind another. It was very beaten up but once it was set up it played great. Could probably have done with a better (pair) of pickups in it, but it fulfilled the need at the time. It would be a good vehicle for modding. G.
