3. Having just played the Real Ale Festival in Loughborough in 2009 with a 3 piece + mouth harp/singer, the band was greeted individually and nice things said about everyone, but as my hand was shaken I was introduced as 'the guy who held it all together.....' - a very nice compliment, I thought!!!! Mind you, it was a Real Ale Festival - everyone was pissed!!! G.
4. As above - played guitar from '59 to '79 & bass for last 8 years with a big gap in between. Pretty much prefer playing bass now, although I'd be OK a s a rhythm. G.
5. Personally, I think you can only get away with no pickguard on a sunburst, or something that's an interesting piece of wood - plain colours don't do it for me. G.
6. He played most of the bass with the Wilburys too. G.
7.
Nice one GB, will do. I have a couple of months of fulfilling current band commitments and welcoming new baby, then I'll get onto the jam thing and give you a shout.
Good enough. G.
8.
Burns Weill Superstreamline. What a beauty.
So THAT'S what the 2012 logo was modelled on........................ G.
9.
Thanks for the replies. The Greyhound sounds great, Kev - unfortunately Sunday afternoons are off limits due to the family thing. I like the Volo - played gigs there, but was unaware of the jam night. I'll pop in one night. Also, thanks to a PM, I can now contact Colin Staples directly, so I can ascertain whether I'll need to bring my own bass. I don't mind, as long as I don't have to bring my amp, but would hate to be the only one with my own instrument (other than the house band) and look like a precious numpty!
If you go to the Volo, contact Simon who, with his wife (bass player!) Candy, organises the gig & he'll fit you in with some other players. There's a J bass on the stage, but as I said, most guys bring their own instruments. Peavey backline. Let me know when you're going & I'll come over from Loughborough. G.
10. I'm currently gas free!!! - having just bought PsychAndy's Yammy BB415!! I have as much amplification & FX as I need & it's just a case of getting the right instrument - the Cirrus was very nearly there, but I like the even-ness across the strings & the pickups on the Yammy. G.
11. Backline & drums/bass/guitar(s)/keys/PA are provided at the Volo, but most guys bring their own instruments - I believe this is also the case at the other Nottingham Open Mikes. G.
12. You could also swing in to the Old Volunteer, over Carlton Hill on a Thursday night from about 8:30 on. I did a lot of it about a year ago but only go occasionally now. Audience mainly musos & very supportive. I suspect if you frequent The Royal Children, you'd recognise some faces at the Volo. G.
13. I'm glad it wasn't mine, Andy. G.
14.
Suzi Quatro?! She's nearly as old as you mate!
But she's younger than me - yum yum!!!! I wish she'd come back on her Radio 2 Thursday night prog - really enjoyed it. G.
15. Add a Yammy BB414 or BB415 to taste, & you don't need no P bass. G.
16. I played lead guitar from 1959 till 1978 when I gave it up when family came along - hardly touched a guitar for 25 years. Took it up again and realised that I was hopeless at free improvisation, which is what it seems to be about these days, and so took up bass. Apart from not being great at improv, I'm a reasonably competent rhythm guitarist & better than most of the leads I've played with - most of them couldn't play chords to save their lives. I'm certainly a better guitarist than the (only) guitar in one of my bands, but he's such a decewnt bloke (and he's not bad, really). I've been playing bass now for 8 years. G.
17.
As the jack socket on the XB400 is on the bottom edge of the body (as opposed to being mounted on a scratchplate), the chances are it's going to be one of the long barrel sockets. They're easy to replace but it does involve a little bit of soldering - three wires in your case I think........
.......and! .... you have to get the right wires in the right places otherwise your battery will quickly run flat. Hot to tip Ground to shaft Battery negative to ring. G.
18.
I've often wondered about pickup positions. Especially when people talk about the "sweet spot" for a Stingray or similar. Surely all this changes as soon as a fretted note is played? The higher up the neck you play the more the effect is. Am I missing something? Frank.
You have no idea how right you are - or maybe you have! G.
19. Jack socket. Replace. That is all! (betcha it is). G.
20. I've Just ordered a set of D'Addario Chromes from Sound Unlimited: http://www.soundunlimited.co.uk and can't thank Rich Turner enough. Having had some probs with the web site (which he says are being looked in to) I left a message on their phone at 4:30pm on Friday. Rich phoned about 10:30am Monday & spent a good half-hour with me on the phone, looking at various possibilities - at one point he thought he had a suitable but opened 4 string set for half-price & would get me a Low B, but they turned out to be medium scale - he's sent me a set of Chromes and discounted me the p&p for getting me excited about the opened 4 string set. A decent gesture & many thanks Rich - I'll be back to him for strings again. His price was the cheapest I could find for Chromes on Google UK. G.
21. I've found Rotosound Solo 55 Compressors are pretty bright & long-lasting - tone reminds me a bit of DR HiBeams. G.
22. Grab it. It's my old one Lemmywinks has & it was a pretty decent bass. G.
23. ........but can you find the bag......................? G.
