1.
Beware... Don't leave them in meths much longer than overnight, 24hrs max. Meths absorbs moisture from the atmosphere & once it has your strings will go rusty. I'm wondering if Turps will work. Anyone? Bit skint at the mo, but when things are on an even keel, I'll investigate. Pete.
True, but my tube is sealed both ends and is pretty full of meth (99%). I keep the strings together with a couple of elastic bands plus I put attach a small cork on a string to the nuts end so I can pull them out without emptying. This works pretty well. I've only done a few sets (I've been keeping them) so I don't really know how long the meths will last, but with this amount (almost 2 pints) I think it'll be a while. I'll change it when it's either too dirty, seems to stop working or I begin to see rust spots. I think petrol would work better than turps, but it's even more volatile than meths. G.
2. The double pot is a Fender TBX tone pot. This extends both the bass & the treble when turned past '5'. This may be the source of your 'honk'' Turn it back to about 4 & see what it's like. Google TBX. Find here: http://www.axesrus.com/axeElectronicsPots.htm#Alpha G.
3. How about an identical but cheap pickguard & stick on a thumbrest with superglue? No extra holes & can be returned to original. If the holes are different, you can stick it on with photograph adhesive & stick on the heads of screws with a dot of glue (no-nails?). G.
4.
People's taste may vary and, as such, they may not like the tone. Otherwise they are amongst the very best IMO As long as it's top-loaded rather than thru-body strung, they ought to be long enough. They easily make it across my thru-body strung jazz (34") with masses to spare. I'm sure I read somewhere that they do fit 35" scale instruments, too. Just don't take my word for it! Whose recommendation was it regarding the Cirrus BXP?
My understanding is that they are stock issue from new. I've currently got Overwaters on thru-body. I've got HiBeams on a 34" and the E has the main winding touching the peg, so I reckon there's more than enough for 35" through body, but I was wondering if all types of DR strings were the same length. Seems so. G.
5.
I string DR Lo-Riders and Hi-Beams through the body on my 35" bass.
Ta! G.
6. ................and others have a long plastic tube 1.5" in diameter into which they put meths and the strings - leave a while, shaking occasionally. Works at least as well as boiling & you don't get any small rusty bits....... G.
7. Here's pics of the Yamaha Drop 6. Previous owner (kid) stripped the finish off this & overdid the sanding in some places & couldn't get into it in others. However, it's smooth & waxed & the overall look is of a roadworn appearance rather than just over-sanded. He also changed the control wiring. Some of these had a 'direct' switch which put the pups direct to the output missing out the vol/tone. This one may have started off this way, but was wired vol/vol/master tone when I got it. There were no pickups & no piezo. I have retained the controls save I've replaced the tone with a push/pull tone pot wired single coil & humbucking when pulled. This gives a very wide range of sounds. The pickups are from a brand-new Jackson - they still had the plasic over them - and I am very impressed - especially with the single coil sound. It has a licenced Floyd Rose & I've strung it with 12 - 70s tuned to BEADF#B which don't feel floppy at all. No case. I have a standard sized guitar box for posting, but with its being extended scale (I think it's 26.5", but could be wrong) I'm not sure it will fit, so pickup preferred. Looking for £120 on this collected. Any questions, PM me. G.
8. Schaller Chrome 3D 4 string bridge. £25 posted. Now gone. Ibanez Soundtank CP5 Compressor - £15 posted. THIS IS NOW WITHDRAWN Stagg A200 Jazz guitar from my son's 'Jamie Cullum' period - lasted about 10 days. I've had a proper fret-job done on this & replaced the crap bridge with a semi-decent one. It plays beautifully & stays in tune. Currently strung with 11-58 flats. There are a few *very* light scuffs, but it's largely unmarked. There is a semi-hard (polystyrene) shaped case with this. It cost £200 plus case about 2 years ago, so I'd really like £120 collected, but open to offers. STILL AVAILABLE!!!!!!! I also have unphotographed a boxed matched pair of Joe Barden twin-rail humbucking Jazz Bass pickups. £110 posted. On hold. NOW GONE Also have an IBM T43 laptop for spares or repair. Chassis/keyboard/screen good, 2x 1gig RAM, with swappable CDROM + DVDROM/CDRW + removable HD holder + 2 power supplies + 12V car voltage converter - open to offers. Again, pics if interested. T43 GONE PM me for further details. Geoff
9. I want to get one of those new-fangled lightweight 500W heads that's about the size of a matchbox, as I'm getting old & the back isn't what it used to be...... There's a whole load of stuff here, so my apologies if some of it isn't where it ought to be, but it seems easier, as there's quite a few items, to keep them together. Ampeg Portabass 1x12 with Beyma B200 (250W@8 Ohms) driver. I've ut a port-tube where the horn was on the good advice of Alex Claber, but the horn will be included. Brilliantly portable little speaker. Would like £120 - open to offers. Pickup only ------- On hold - now gone. Here's it's mate - the Crate Powerblock. You all know how versatile this is. You'll also know that most of them have an underlying 'suzz' and this is no exception although it's pretty inaudable at playing levels. These are going for £130-ish on Ebay, so £120 collected. On hold now gone.
10. Thanks Andy - that's appreciated. Anyone else got anything to contribute? Anyone used one or bought & sold one? G.
11. See above (currently) - Peavey Cirrus BXP for 35" scale & good B string, or Peavey Millenium for a 34" scale. Both have fairly narrow necks. G.
12. May I recommend you look at the Peavey Millenium BXP (34" scale) or the Peavey Cirrus BXP (35" scale)? I have a Cirrus & it plays superbly. G.
13. My pal Paul has this 2x15 Celestion/Marshall cab. He bought it in the 80's but believes it was a 70's build. It has the input near the bottom back & has a plate saying "Made in England - A13498" with 2 recessed carrying handles. He's sent the info to Marshall who say they "can't recognise the cab" - !!??!! Its dimensions are H=39" W= 29" D= 12" and it stands on wheels. Anyone recognise it or have any info on its value etc? Geoff
14.
It's like Google never existed... http://www.myspace.com/kyleeastwood
Muchly ta!!! G.
15. Anybody tell me where to see the dates of the gigs? G.
16.
Thanks for the heads up. I did see that one. Not sure if its a little too much power but its a great amp and price.. J.
You can never have "too much" power!! You can always turn down too much, but you can't turn up what ain't there. G.
17. Is it possible to change the tension on the truss rod a little? I have a theory that these dead spots may be caused by a counter-vibration set up in the truss rod which cancels out the played note. It'd be good if you could try this & let me know. Geoff
18. Quick question on DR strings generally: I have a 35" scale (Cirrus BXP) for which the recommended string is the HiBeam, whch is the correct length - are all DR string types suitable for 35" scale? Geoff
19. I started off on guitar & have been (and still am ) playing it for 53 years, mostly rhythm/lead. I do not perceive myself as being a 'failed' or the 'worst' gutarist. I'm certainly better than some I've seen/heard playing professionally. I took up bass about 7 years ago as there were guitarists oozing out from under every rock & I really wanted to get playing & gigging. Since then my focus has moved from the guitar to the bass & though I still play, I really see myself as a bassist these days. G.
20. Blimey!!! I got a bit of a shock when I clicked on the link & the first thing I saw was my own Westone.......found the Concorde further down though!!! G.
21. There's a good chance I might be getting my old band together that disbanded in 1966........except the drummer's in Oz...... G.
22. I had a Washburn RB2000 5er that looked terribly like that - a little cracker it was too. G.
23. Looks like it'll be the end of June or beginning of July if that's OK, however, if someone else wants it, feel free. Geoff
24. Stick it through an MXR-80+. G.
25. Aye, 'e's not a bad lad, is that Alex - I got good advice from him too, and he didn't charge me either!!! G.
