1. Loosen the neck screws *a little* and tap the top of the headstock toward the right until the strings are central enough to please your aesthetics. Tightens neck screws *properly*!! You (probably) have a loose neck pocket, my man! G.
2. Just bought some wall-hangers from Pete who sent them as soon as he received the cheque. I want to thank him for his patience with me as (a) we've just moved house & *everything* is still in Pickford boxes and ( I haven't been well & been confined to bed for the last 4 days. Thanks Pete. Geoff
3. ................allegedly.................
4. Fitted a P neck fretless with ebanol f/board to a jazz body & it was just fine. G.
5. That Studio went for £350 - a bargain in my book. G.

Free VSTs

Apologies if these have been posted before: http://www.uv.es/~ruizcan/p_vst.htm G.
7. +1 on the above. I have a Cirrus BXP and can confirm it's ace value for the money. I payed £200 for mine. G.
8. Jack Bruce always said Bach was one of his main influences. G.
9. I've used a Marshall Guv'nor II. It has a 4 band EQ, being 'super bass', bass, mids & top' I use my MXR-80+ now.
10.
I'm sure there was a thread recently on these. They're cracking basses, I had one new in '79 (as did a certain Mr Sting). Body wings are stained ash, and they had tuned rods in the neck to eliminate dead spots. I think the last one on here went around the £300 mark so for a scruffy one that'd be your baseline, but good ones can go for £800 on the 'bay. Pics are always good!
I had a fancy for one of these until I watched one climb over £850 about 4 years ago on Ebay - mind you, I don't think you'd get that now. There's an Ibanez Studio on Ebay at the moment, which isn;t a million miles away from the Musician - you could watch how that goes.
I have spare 15 and 12" PA speakers lying about. 200watt each Alto Elvis. What are you opinions about using them as a bass cabs? Cheers.
I don't really know - a few are using the self-powered speakers with a pre & getting good results, but I have no experience of this . I wonder if they have the xmax? G.
12.
Geoff, coming at this issue from a different angle, you might like to play around with eq on your Eminence cab because I think it's highly likely you could get the sound you are currently getting from your 2 x 15 simply by eq'ing the bottom end of your smaller cab and using it on its own. If it's the Kappalite 3015 (not LF) you've got, it won't take a huge amount of bass boost, but you say you don't play that loud anyway. If it works for you, it could save you having to hump two cabs to your gigs. Just a thought.
Thanks Stevie. I pretty much do that. The issue here is neither related to cabs nor tone. It's getting a small class D amp which, combined with my Eminence cab will give me an alternative, lightweight rig. I don't play big venues, just pubs & 300W through that cab would cover it. It would also be light to lug around for practice. It would be a lot easier to put my bass into my MXR-80+ then into a Shuttle (or similar) than lugging around my rackbag with the MAG400 & the 5 Band parametric in it. G.
13. Looks like things will have to wait, Lemmy as my band has just become defunct due to the guitarist/vox taking a sabatical due to overwork/stress. No gigs, no pocketmoney I have some stuff I can sell, but since we've recently moved house, everythings a jumble. I'll postpone it maybe a couple of months. The LG1000 might or might not be an answer. From what I've read, it seems to suffer many of the criticisms aimed at the 350, and 500W@4Ohms 'per side' is a bit fiddly for me. But thanks for the tip, it's appreciated. G.
Soundslive have an ex-demo LG1000 on their site at £219 Geoff: http://www.soundsliveshop.com/p/Ashdown_Li.../ASH-EX-LTG1000 It's been on there a while though so may have gone. Express have one for a tenner more with free delivery: http://www.expressmusicstore.co.uk/products.asp?code=80910 They look scarily similar to my Superfly (it's had the extra casing removed), same box and apart from the eq section they have the same front and back. I hope they don't have the same reliability issues!
14.
Well if you already have a 3015 how bloody loud do you want to play. A single 3015 will handle 300 watts - which most players haven't ever heard through a speaker like a 3015 which won't distort at all. Why don't you just get a Roland bass Cube for practice - the 3015 seems a bit big - albeit light? Can't believe the Celestion can out perform the 3015 or add much either. Wattage means nothing for bass, its Xmax and sensitivity that counts. Wattage just emasures the point where the coil burns out. My Sica's in the Ashdown 4x10"s can't hande much more than 40 watts before they exceed Xmax and they are 91.5 sensitivity.
So good you said it twice, Eh? FYI my 3015 is rated at 450W RMS and it goes VERY loud indeed when powered by my Ashdown MAG400 (485W@4Ohms). Even louder when I attach my Celestion cab. The Celestion adds a lot of bottom end as it's in a large ported cab & the 3015 is in a smallish cab. It takes both to get the full EQ range. Why are you asking how loud I want to play? Volume is not an issue here. I have much more volume than I would ever need on tap if I take my full set of gear. Please note that in my OP I say that these gigs are not very loud. A Roland Bass Cube (I'm assuming you are suggesting the 100W) is, indeed, quite a nice practice amp, but I wouldn't gig with it as it doesn't have enough headroom to please me. Where's the arguement as to a Celestion outperforming the Eminence? Have you read my post correctly? The point here is that I already have a 3015 in a small & lightweight cab - not unlike a Bareface Compact, in fact & I'm looking for a tiny yet powerful head. Perhaps when you are 63, with 5 stents in your heart, arthritis and diabetes, you'll appreciate the value of lightweight gear. I see you're new here. Draw in your horns & read accurately. And maybe it would be nice if you introduced yourself in the 'Introductions' thread on the main page. And we usually don't swear at each other till we've been members for at least 24 hours. Further research has indicated I should perhaps be looking at the GB Shuttle 3 or 6. Word has it the LG350 needs a pre-amp for the preamp to drive the power stage adequately, and I've read some serious queries as to the robustness of the unit. G.
15. Since my guitarist has had to withdraw and there's now no hope of finding a drummer, I find I'm looking around again. I am 'mature'. I have gear. I have transport. I believe I have a modicum of talent. I can sing a bit. I can even play that small, skinny six-stringed version of the bass reasonably well. I'm in Loughborough, which is fairly central to Derby, Nottingham & Leicester. My tastes in music obviously lean toward the 60s/70s due to my age, but I'll play pretty much anything except thrash & punk (honestly, I look silly playing that stuff). Have gear, will travel. Geoff
16. Terminated. Band defunct. G.
17. The MXR-80+ (nominally 9V battery or supply) works off phantom power, so I assume there's some way of doing it. G.
18.
That depends on whether you mean actual pure Tung oil, or what's sometimes sold as Tung oil (but is a mixture of a few things with Tung oil). There is a difference. Pure Tung oil tends to rely on rather warm conditions in order to set. If it's left somewhere that's cool it takes forever to dry - even more so if there's a certain amount of humidity. Even then it can tend to dry unevenly.
Yup, fair 'nuf, but I can honestly say I've had no probs using pure Tung oil. G.
19. Mine sounds great. I'm using an MXR-80+ as an outboard pre. G.
20. To actually *clean* things like wood & fretboards, I've had good results with a stuff called 'Liquid Gold' - you'll get it on Ebay. Antique dealers use this to both clean & liven up the colour of unprotected elderly wooden items. It's a combination of aromatic, light and heavy oils. It also contains trichloroethylene (tricllone) to be a little bit careful. I buy a can, then pour a dollop into an open jar & leave it. This lets the aromatics & the triclone evaporate & leaves me the heavier oils that's good for reviving wood - it's mainly almond oil. The fresh stuff in the can containing the triclone can be used sparingly on a cloth for really dirty bits - like grotty fretboards for instance. Lemon oil is ideal, but a lot of stuff sold as lemon oil is just mineral oil scented with lemon. Check what you buy is '100% lemon oil' - the Dunlop mentioned above is ideal. On my own instruments, I sometimes give the fretboard a quick wipe with a bit of Tung oil on a cloth, then polish it straight off again. Tung oil dries hard & tends to seal the pourous wood, but can be easily removed using a light oil like lemon. G.
21.
Sorry Geoff
No probs. Thanks for acknowledging. It's appreciated. I just like to dispel the mythology. G.
22.
No, not yours mate BUT, "If a custom shop bass has alot of wear and tear (and no deep cracks etc) I would generally think its because it was such a good bass, the owner couldnt put it down, imo that is a sign of a very good instrument." I'm sorry but I think that's absolute nadgers. The odd ding and scratch I can understand, but I can't see why any instrument should end up looking like it's spent six months in the Gorbals because someone "loved" it.
As a Glaswegian, I don't appreciate that crack about The Gorbals. It's been a very, very long time since the Gorbals have been like that. It was completely renovated in the 60/70s and there's a hell of a lot of decent folk living there now. Geoff
