1.
Read somwhere that this is the worst way to tune up because of something called the pythagorean comma. Which if i can remember is to do with the guitar never being in perfectly tune, and by using 5th and 7th harmonics is the worst way to tune up. if you google it you will get a better idea than i can give you.
http://www.answers.com/pythagorean+comma?cat=technology Interesting... The "twelve perfect fifths are not exactly equal to seven perfect octaves, and the Pythagorean comma is the amount of the discrepancy". However, I find 5th and 7th harmonics tuning the easiest way to do by ear. You reduce a lot of overtones, allowing me to discern differences in pitch easier. Also the pitch is higher, further making the process easier. I mean, you can even tune by feeling the bass until the oscillations disappear.
2.
I know he's right because some rhythm parts have been dragging or plodding in a leaden way. At home I'm working with loops to correct this and get on beat but when I'm with the other chaps I tend to get drawn into guitar-esque parts and slip into the off-beat. Anyone got advice? We have had kick drum problems making it rather hard to hear but that sounds like a poor excuse...
I've had a similar problem for a while, and I think I've identified the problem. The length between my index and middle finger on my right hand is about 1.3cm. I don't have very large hands, so I believe the difference must be a lot. I don't play often with a pick, but I do notice I'm more consistently on time when recording with a pick than fingers. I really don't wanna have to play with a pick, because I worked really hard on my string crossing with fingers to a good standard and I really don't want to have to go through it again. Anyways, that's my excuse...
3. This is the nicest Warwick LTD I've seen in a while. I actually hated last years Thumb LTD.
4. Wow! You must be well chuffed how that came out. The bass tone sounded great... excellent example of a good P tone.
5.
When I was in a band that was signed, we would make an effort ourselves to save money as we knew at the end of the day, it would bite us in the arse and cost us money. We had the chance to fly to Seatle and record our first album with the guy who produced Pearl Jam's first album. For a newly signed band, this was a very tempting and exciting prospect but in the end we said, its not needed, it would cost way to much and we ended up going to a studio in Wales where the Stereophonics record. No doubt saving us a ton of money. Just the thought of shipping us and our equipment over to the States for a few months was very scary. So, its easy for bands to take the piss but the record companies can and are just as bad but I guess you get it in all manner of industries.
Wow... that took serious level headedness to do that. Me, I would have probably said, "When's the next flight?". It would have been an awesome experience though.
6. In the interest of fair reporting, I'm posting a reponse from Monster Cables CEO, Noel Lee in regards to reports of frivilous suits against name trademarks. http://www.audioholics.com/news/press-rele...-from-noel-lee/ Please note, the letter was sent directly through their legal department. Monster admit to "4 trademark oppositions a year". However, this letter does not deal with the cease and desist issue against Blue Jeans Cable and Mr. Denke. Audioholics reported "Design patents represent nothing more that that: design. There is no technological content within design patents. The net effect is that Monster cable suing Blue Jeans is like you suing someone who copied the custom paint job on your car."
7. Not me... I'm a nitpicky git. Every bass I own, I really really like. However I can point out flaws in each one. But I guess nothing's perfect.
8. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showpost.php...mp;postcount=13 Check out this guy's response to my post on TB!
Now, I may be drunk(?)...but I'm pretty sure this will be going in the post tomorrow: "Dear Monster Cable: This is the first, and last, piece of your alleged "intellectual property" I will ever own. I guess I'll just use coat hangers from now on. [My Full Name] Musician"
9.
This really gets my goat, I have a tuner, really really handy, always tune up using it. During "band practise", I'll tune up then our Guitarist and Vocalist will be like, "OK Moody, now tune to the guitar" - which of course she's tuned up by ear. Even though I can't tune up by ear - you can tell its well out. Once, after doing this I checked it again and I reckon I was in F or something ridculous. I just get on with it for a quite life. f-ing tools honestly.
That would drive me absolutely crazy!

Hi

Welcome!
11. Sounds like he's got an ego issue... just record the gig. When he's out of tune, he'll realise his pride is misplaced. Also, I've seen gigs when the guitarist tunes by ear in-between songs. It takes forever, because the environment is so noisy. At that point the audience loses attention. All for the sake of an ego trip.
12.
I suggest you be very careful about how you do that if I were you. There's a thing called defamation that can be applied if you're making any untrue claims about them.
I'll simply post links to what was said here and reference them. I'll go and quickly edit out what could be seen as defamation. Do you think this is okay? I've tried to be as factual as possible.
[edited]Monster Cables are suing a lot of companies for either having "Monster" in the name or produce high quality cables. Note that some of the companies with "Monster" in the name aren't in the audio industry at all and include everything from Monster Baby, to Monster Security. They are currently in ligitigation with some 126 companies. (http://ttabvue.uspto.gov/ttabvue/v?qt=adv&...ucts&page=1) Very recently they started a case against Blue Jeans Cable. Unbeknownst to them, the owner was a lawyer in a previous life and told them their claim was frivilous and was simply a bully tactic to scare off the competition. (http://www.audioholics.com/news/industry-n...s-strikes-back). As pointed out in a reply from a Halloween shop which fought back and won, with Monster Cables agreeing to fork out legal costs, they stated that the word "Monster" existed before the company did, and their copyright of a Halloween store could not possibly infringe on their audio market image. 13. Do we have a boycott on our hands. I've been spreading the message to other forums.
14. More power to the little guy! I am quite appalled that Monster apply such underhand tactics. Needlesstosay, they certainly won't have my custom in the future.
15. Luckily I satisfied my P GAS just before the sudden demand. I've always wanted a good P bass for a long time, but I could never find one. Then I discovered my hankering for a Fender Jazz, and I thought the S-1 switch would cover those tones for me. I was wrong. For some of the basslines in my band, I knew I needed pure thump but without the mud. For me, the Precision is the simply the best at doing that without having to dial in tone and EQ settings like my other basses.
16.
question is....does it come with a kettle lead ?
17. Apparently my Warwick Thumb was used by Victor Wooten one time when the previous owner saw him at a clinic.
18. Very nice!
19. My thoughts are that though it would be nice for all sellers to be active members of the community, the most important thing is that they are here. More sellers and dealers here lead to a more vibrant marketplace and ultimately results in better choice for all of us. I personally would be very wary of anyone selling something with their first ad. But I would like to able to make that choice.
20. Here's my 2p for what it's worth. There will always be a sector of the market concerned with getting good customer service. Otherwise why else would some people shop at Waitrose than Tesco? If the Bass Gallery continue and maintain their reputation for good customer service, they will survive the storm rocking a whole of music instrument retailers at the moment. Because it is extremely hard for a web based company to provide that good a customer service apart from getting the item shipped to the person quickly... and even then they're at the mercy of Royal Mail, etc. So of course BG will find it difficult to compete with prices, but there are people out there who want the extra level of service and customer care that even places like thomann.de can't provide.
21. Damn... missed it! Was looking forward to it, as I haven't seen it live yet.
22. Man... I can't believe I missed it again! I woke up feeling absolutely awful and thought it best not to risk going. Looks like it was fantastic. Here's to me hoping for a SE Bash sometime soon.
23. If you own a Japanese Fender Jazz... does that mean we have to start learning Japanese Jazz?
24.
I m based in Battersea and I d love to come but i got no car. it could be also a way of splitting fuel cost. ( trains are so exepensive those days...)
I live in Battersea too mate... whereabouts? I live near Battersea High Street near Battersea Bridge. I'm hitching a lift with Crazykiwi, if he can still manage to get out of his rehearsal. He might still have a space left if you PM him.
