1.
Thrash - first four Metallica albums, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Testament, Exodus, Annihalator, Destruction, Kreator, Onslaught, The Haunted, early Sepultura
These are thrash to me. When I think of glam I think of Poison and 80s hair metal. It wasn't for me.
2. Iron Maiden - Live After Death the video.
3.
I remember when Heavy Weather was released. I almost gave up playing. After hearing Jaco, I was like; "What's the use" Blue
I have gone through loads of Jaco phases in the last 20 years, each time I learn a bit more but I know I'm not gifted. He was, it's good enough for me just to pick up something new every time I listen.
4. I love some of it but not all of it. The obvious ones like Come On Come Over are and the Birthday Concert version of The Chicken are awe inspiring and flawless. The widdly bits in Punk Jazz and even Donna Lee do nothing for me, it feels at times like he was trying to play trumpet lines on the bass. Dry Cleaner From Des Moines is a work of art. Even though he wasn't in a good place at the time, I still like that Jaco instructional video. It's a bit sad in places but how often do you see a great dissecting his own playing?
5. I grew up in a house where the Beatles were on all the time. My parents were big fans, although they were more John lennon than Paul McCartney. When I started playing bass one of my dads bandmates taught me how to play a few Beatles songs. I don't listen to the Beatles now, I fully appreciate them but I heard them enough when young to not need to listen anymore. I don't really think of Paul as being a bassist either, he just happened to play bass on The Beatles albums. I see him more of an all round musician, this means that he was able to use his ear for melody when creating basslines. As he also did when playing piano or guitar. As far as The Cavern and Liverpool go, I was there 10 years ago and the city felt a bit like a big piece of Beatles, Liverpool FC and Everton memorabilia. I was back this summer though and the city has new life and seems very different to me. Its a great city with much more to give if you open your eyes and ears to more than the football and music. The Cavern is good, its not the original but so what. If you go in there a cynic then you will leave a cynic. Go in and appreciate the collective greatness of that part of the city and you will have a great time. Blue you would love it.
6.
I've got no idea how to say it. Maroochick? I should have figured that out before I ordered one
Marooshchick I believe! With the 'i' sounding a little bit like an 'uh' and pronounced quickly.
7. Orange Terror 500c SP2x12 combo in black Hello everyone! The black version of the Orange Terror 500c SP212 combo. This is an amazing combo and astonishingly loud and powerful. I play in a band with a drummer, 2 guitarists and a keyboard payer and the combo can easily hold its own. It is in excellent condition (the combo is near mint in fact) and has a thick padded Hotcovers cover. I would prefer collection on this, I am in Wakefield close to J38, 39 and 40 of the M1 and J25 of the M62. i don't mind packaging it up though if you can arrange a courier to collect. Will consider trades for Ampeg gear. Link to pics https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ru9lu6benvz4f5u/AAD_f8S6JwRbySpuraBp_HJua?dl=0 Thanks for looking! Julian
8.
When I was young I would use any rig the rehearsal studios had and never complained or felt lacking. listening back to the old recordings I find nothing to complain about. So why have I spent a fortune over the past 10 years and only just achieved a tone I'm mostly happy with?
This is exactly what I think too. 10 years ago a band I was in got signed to a major and we did a tour with a named act. I used a Stingray into a 200w Ampeg BA210SP. That saw me through playing at all the venues on that tour, from the Cardiff Arena to the Hammersmith Apollo. I never worried about headroom or speaker dispersion or any of the other things I think about now. My sound, stage volume and overall happiness with my rig were just fine. It's this darn website that makes us constantly wanting for more!!
9. I had a tab for Teen Town from Guitarist magazine (I think) in about 1997. I could play the notes and keep up,with the speed of it but I didn't really 'get it'. It took a lot of years before I truly appreciated Jaco. That said though, I don't like all of it. I like the parpy Jazz tone and Dry Cleaner... gives me something new every time I listen to it, and there aren't that many things in life that do that. So to use a film analogy, I have never seen a Star Wars film or any kind of Star Trek film or TV show. I do realise how important they are though to modern day film. Jaco and James Jamerson are that to bass in music in my opinion.
10.
Always good to see another Leeds resident! Was Academy of Sound on the business park that got levelled for the new structure that's currently going up? Just off Whitehall Road / Wellington Street? If so that was a great place! I love this thread already, it's really making me want to pull the trigger and finally buy a Jazz while I'm on my week off...
Hello! The one I bought from was out near the New Roscoe pub, bit further along towards Roundhay Road, it bit the dust years ago! Maybe is wasn't called Academy of Sound? I remember the one you are talking about though, that was a great shop. PMT seems to be the best bet in Leeds now, I miss Music Ground and Alpha Music though. Good username by the way! Oh and did you pull the trigger?
11. Just rang Orange, very helpful people indeed! Its the four screws mentioned above and also the 2 handle screws. The head unit can be taken out then. Will be trying it later.
12. Thanks, I have taken these out but the head doesn't shift one bit. I didnt want to force it. Wondered if I was missing something.
13. Hello everyone I have an Orange Terror bass 500 combo and want to tame the gain by changing the valves. I have done this before in the Terror bass head and it was pretty straightforward. Anyone done it in the combo? How did you do it? I can't see how to access the valves. Cheers Julian
14. Have you tried Keith Dawson music? String Surgeon in Horbury Bridge (bit further out of the way I know) is good. Abrupt and rude but good.
15. Hello everyone Just bought these D'Addario Half Round bass strings. They are Medium Gauge, 50-105, Long Scale. Sound and feel great not quite what I am looking for right now though, they were on my bass for about 30 minutes. Cut for a Fender Precision. http://www.daddario....105__Long_Scale £18 delivered. Cheers for looking.
16. To me Precisions do pretty much anything that a bassist is meant to do within a band. There is a Sean Hurley video on YouTube and he talks about being a session musician and needing P bass because that sound is what the artist and producer want pretty much all the time. Turning up with a 5 string active Lakland caused him problems. Of course that doesn't mean it must be the sound that everyone should desire. I think that its history in music has big part in why many people end up wanting and loving the P bass sound. Fender P haters will ways be around, I used to be one. It took me 25 years of playing to convert.
17. We are trying to help! Can you press the middle of the neck pickup button like in the pic above? Try it when plugged in! Does the sound change?
18. I have just sold one of these made in 2005. It had the S1 and so does this by the appearance of the neck pickup control knob. Plug the bass in and turn all the knobs to full. Press the middle of the neck one. The sound will boost and the bridge knob will be non functional. If you are saying this is not the case then has it been modified?
19.
I'm always amazed that the bass part to 'Something' can be considered 'busy'. It's far from simple root notes, but to my ear it slides around the melody perfectly.
Agreed. I am the first person to point out overplaying, it has never crossed my mind with this one.
