1.
Old band always started with 'go your own way...' by Fleetwood Mac. Last band was 'Happy' by Pharrell. New band is starting with 'Rio' by Duran Duran
Go your own way and Rio are my 2 most ripped off basslines!
2.
Currently a poem by Robert Calvert - Song of the Gremlin. People actually seem enthralled upon hearing a poem.
I like that idea! Might try Evidently Chickentown by John Cooper Clarke.
3. How do you open your gigs? Simmer to a boil or a straight up crowd pleaser? I'm aware that we all play in a wide variety of bands but it might be good to hear how people choose their first song. My new band is actually my old band that has reformed and we have decided to do an entirely new set. We will open with What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding by Elvis Costello/Charlie Adam.
4. For me its Joe Dart.
5.
Unless you're a Shark or a Princess, its quite doubtful you'll notice anything at all
😃
6. I really like Gold Against the Soul by the Manic Street Preachers. Amazing bass sound on it too. The outro to Sleepflower in particular.
7.
I play close to the neck for a thicker sound and close to the bridge for a thinner, more funky sound. Nothing unusual there. I don't anchor my thumb so playing in any position is easier. I think anchoring your thumb on the pickup limits your ability to vary your sound, especially on a Precision. Frank.
I do this too, I have found that I hit the strings with a much lighter touch on a Precision than other basses, especially when over the pickup. It just seems to sound better that way on my bass to my ears.
8. The Verve - Urban Hymns. Most Richard Ashcroft stuff I find dreary and dull. I don't know why he sings in that American accent.
9. Those comments are hilarious. I played The Garage in 2001 supporting Jimmy Eat World, great venue. One of my all time favourite places to play.
10.
Smashing pumpkins Gish stands out, but there are quite a few when I think about it.
I think I know Siamese Dream inside out, I loved Gish too.
11. From being a kid it's Iron Maiden - Live after Death. I know Jeff Buckley - Grace inside out too.
12. This really isn't helping my Stingray GAS.
13. I like it! Apart from you though, who will really take notice? I mean that in the nicest possible way! I really don't like gold hardware or SG's but the guitarist in my band has just got a Tokai SG with gold hardware, sounds awesome and he is an amazing guitarist! I felt like I had a point at the start of this post but I'm not sure now..
14. On the topic of Janek, I have always liked what I have seen if him online. A lot of his lessons go way over my head (he talks so fast!) but I have picked up a few things from him. A recent VLOG showed him reflecting on his recent divorce. It was very candid and my respect for him grew, I also drew inspiration from it.
15.
He used to post here. . . until the knuckle draggers chased him away.
I hold my hand up to having written some out of order posts in the past. Not in the context of Janek though. I regret it and it won't happen again. I have apologised directly where needed.
16. Jeff Buckley 'Morning Theft' hit me like a sledgehammer. Time and place I suppose.
17. Good thread! The intro guitar part to this always has the goose bump effect on me. http://youtu.be/iIluBvQ77Bk And on a complete and random tangent so does the string part at 2.45 in this. I remember it being on the radio in the car and the hairs on the back of my neck standing up, I'm not even a massive fan of the rest of the song. Strange. Sugababes on basschat, whatever next. http://youtu.be/wo07t6XjNO4
18. I think Woodinblack is after one these in the Items Wanted section. edit - I've just realised he might want the 5 string instead.
19. It had some kind of natural compression quality too.
20. I've started experiencing quite a lot of pain in my forearm and elbow recently (picking hand side). As a result I have started using a pick more as this seems to help. Rehearsal the other night saw me playing my Precision with a pick with palm muting as and when suitable. What a sound! Sat great in the mix and sounded fat and full. I have played fingerstyle exclusively for around ten years and it was a real eye opener realising how great and varied pick style can be. I'm converted.
21. Musicman Stingray 5.
22. I just played a Musicman Stingray 5 in PMT. It was perfection.
23.
I'm impressed with this talented English woman. Great chops, tone solid playing and funky. And she can sing. How come you guys have never mentioned her? My kind of drummer too, he's killing that hi-hat with 16ths under the key board solo. Rebecca Johnson https://youtu.be/dVnJk_cgFRc Blue
I enjoyed that!
24.
A two fret stretch between index and second fingers. Frank.
She looks pretty happy doing it though, in 10 years time maybe less so..
25.
Much better than my shoe gazing
You should try these moves next time!
