1. I would love to go down this route, an amp is like a safety blanket though isn't it? It would be interesting to see which basses work best for this.
2. I used that Linebacker everywhere, small pubs to the big(ish) Rio Rocks in Bradford and its was never lacking. I think I used it in part exchange for a Trace Elliott 2x10 combo, my back has never forgiven me.
3. Hello all I went to see Turin Brakes (remember them?) at the Picturedrome in Holmfirth recently. Part of the fun of going to any gig for me is seeing what gear the band are using. Usually its Ampeg, a few Hartke players and every so often I have seen an Aguilar rig pop up. For the first time in years though the bassist was using a Laney rig, I hardly ever see the brand mentioned anywhere nowadays. A quick look on the internet shows that its still alive and well and not all of it is cheap. The classifieds on here hardly ever have it for sale, I can't remember the last time I saw anyone write about them on here. Anyone have one? The last Laney product I had was one of these below, I got it for Christmas in 1990.
4.
Anyone playing a great bass line or riff in the last 60 years has probably nicked it themselves.
I couldn't agree more. I speed it up, slow it down, play half of it, take parts from different genres and use them. I used to be in a very noisy Husker Du style 3 piece, armed with a Rickenbacker 4001 I used all kinds of lines from different types of music. I must have used the bassline to 'Go Your Own Way' by Fleetwood Mac countless times in that band, and 'Dear Prudence' too. I'm not even that keen on either tune.
5. This is an interesting watch, I've tried it. My main issue is that I'm not a confident singer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3Lszt2HPK8
6. Spector basses blew my mind this year, it was like each one I played had been custom made for me. Can't wait to go back next time, I've been saving up...
7.
Old Macca drops a clanger about 3:01 in Let it be. He plays a wrong chord on the piano and quickly corrects it before anyone notices. Unfortunately, I did.
Jazz chord maybe?!
8.
There's an arpeggiated keyboard bit in Blondie's "Atomic" where I am sure the chord changes half a bar too early.
Now this is what I'm talking about! I thought it was just me. Also, I used to be a metal fan, the entire Helloween Walls of Jericho vocals are out of tune as I recall.
9. In the words of Lord Phil Collins - I Can't Dance. It's what people remark upon and I've been gigging for so long now that if if I actually starting to look like I was enjoying myself then people would think I am on drugs. The irony is, I am never happier than on stage playing, my face just doesn't show it.
10. Hello everyone! My 6 year old boy is mad for You Really Got Me by The Kinks at the moment, honestly I have listened to that song so many times over the last 2 weeks. One thing that gets on my nerves is the tambourine, to me it sounds 'out', really really behind the beat. There are a couple of songs where my ears don't tune in to what's going on. The sections of Black Dog that go down to E and have that odd almost out of time feel leading back up to the main riff have the same effect on me. At around 0.44 There is a solo (at 1.02) in the Guns N Roses version of Live and Let Die that sounds out to me too. Now obviously I am no record producer, so sorry if I sound a little bit out of order in posting this. Anyone else have a song that makes them feel like this? And no answers like 'the entire Rush back catalogue' please! Or Carol Kaye.
11.
I'm completely lost and don't get the response to my dead flats at all!
There is a song Called Baby Got Back. Its a bit of a tongue in cheek MTV rap type song from days gone by. The opening lines are "I like big butts and I cannot lie" Your thread title brought to mind the lyrics to that song. It's not on youtube though, he must be one of those people that doesn't like his songs on there. Anyway, hope that clears it up! I like dead flats too by the way, the deader the better. Sorry I derailed your thread.
12.
If you mean my you tube video then i use new strings and various amp settings etc. In order to get as close to SH sound as I can, but when I play my own tracks I prefer the dead flats sound on my other Pb to the blue one or the growly jazz bass. I find the dead flats sut better in my mix.
No it's not that, I was referring to the earlier post. Its a reference to a song by Sir Mix a Lot. I do like your tone though in your vids. Very nice.
13.
?
Sir Mix a lot - Baby Got Back Have look on youtube! I must admit that when I saw the title 'I like dead flats' that song sprang to mind instantly!
14. I would have thought its the perfect situation, he gets to do the rehearsals, live shows and recording (the good bits) and not the interviews, photoshoots and get involved in any other band boring bits. Perfect!
15. I think 'My Iron Lung' by Radiohead as a bit of slap in it. I heard the isolated bass track a few years ago. Who would have thought Radiohead and slap bass would make an appearance together?
16. I would echo all that has been said about meeting the management and sussing out the practicalities. I know that sounds very dull but it will end up being the thing that makes or breaks your enjoyment in my experience. It depends on how old you are, responsibilities, family, etc too.
17. I've just got one of these https://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_e_bass_gigbag_premium.htm?sid=ddc5d687ba9db40280eee90a7eca25ae Excellent quality, and an absolute steal.
18. I altered the pickup height but it messed with the volume/tone of the other strings. I did put flats on once and that made a bit of a difference. I read once that the 5 strings don't have this issue so maybe should get one of those!
19. I love the sound of a Stingray, generally when other people are playing one though. I've had 2. The first was a 3eq natural/black/maple and sounded great. It didn't really fit what I was doing at the time so I got a Jazz instead. Then a few years ago I got a 2eq black/black/maple that sounded amazing on the E A and D but the G just vanished in the mix so I got rid. This may be a contentious issue amongst Stingray fans (I am one) but is the weak G a common issue? I have read a bit about how it is not uncommon. Is it to do with individual bass issues or is it a user EQ problem? I'm not sure if it is the latter as my amp EQ is generally pretty flat. Anyone have any input on this? Someone suggested a compressor but I think if I am going to spend a grand and half then I shouldn't need a pedal to sort out any issues.
20. £30 and a good night, otherwise its a waste of time. I have a full time job that supports me so gigs are extra. If gigging was my main source of income though I would give a different answer.
21.
Wasn't this album recorded on a Stingray?
Great, now I want a Stingray again just to make sure.
22. When I was 18 I knew the basslines on this album inside out, I loved it. I got the Return of The Space Cowboy album and really didn't like it so I went off them a bit. 20 odd years on and I listened to this today while I was doing some decorating, I appreciated it in a far different way than I used to. Before I just loved the basslines, now I see the brilliance in Stuart Zender even more as a part of the whole piece of work. I hear some of the influences I missed first time round, some Jaco there in the bass and also some James Brown in the vocals aside from the obvious Stevie Wonder. So now I need a Warwick. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kjp1vPLkBBQ
