  1. Or use a DI box with ground lift.
  2. Phantom power should not cause shocks in a microphone - even if it doesn't itself need the power. Sounds like some other issue, eg raised/poor earth as above.
  3. That's my main fear and hesitation (with recommending) them. A simple plug in device, on its own, won't be able to sense a poor earth. It would need a proper test to check the resistance of the earth path to true earth, by an electrician. I am not an electrician so I can't really comment too much, but an RCD would offer a degree of protection (it doesn't need an earth to function - it works by comparing the current difference of the live and neutral lines). And to offer some protection against a poor earth, you could use an isolating transformer + RCD - but really you shouldn't be plugging into and using such poor wiring in the first place.
  4. It most definitely contains the root in the bassline.
  5. That's pretty similar to the one I have. I know its not brilliant, but its better than not testing it. (Not sure if it would give a false sense of security though!!)
  6. Ok no worries. It sounds like you've already made your mind up.
  7. So are a lot of things which can be studied and improved upon.
  8. I have a simple mains tester in the bag. If a venue's electrics looks dodgy, I would test it.
  9. I remember being in a guitar shop for around an hour (I was chatting etc) and unsurprisingly, the most popular thing sold is strings. But I was surprised at the number of people (who seem to be regular/decent players) who brought the guitar in, for the shop to change the strings for them.
  10. The simple answer is "no", because the key is (basically) defined by a bunch of things, one of the important ones being what note is in the bass. But there is music without a definite key - I can't think of any examples in pop/rock though.
  11. I know but I can try to help out DJpullchord as best I can with his question.
  12. I don't know what you mean, what's "relative 5th type thing"?
  13. There's plenty of music which is atonal. Also, there's things like the start of "Birdland" where the root isn't played until the 4th bar of the song. But normally, if you define a piece as having a key, the note the bass is playing very much defines which key the piece is in, so its not going to happen.
  14. You can come up with another bassline for us to guess then Jimothey!
  15. Its a wild guess.....the chain?
  16. I don't think I'm going to have time....I need to go to another rehearsal in about 25 mins........
  17. http://www.fse-aardvark-planner.tk/other/gtbl5.mp3 I'm 99.9% certain nobody would have got it with the bassline on its own, so I've drummed up some....errrr.......drums too (just the basic drum sound out of Musescore). Also (and this is a big clue...) I've started it where the bass guitar comes in, and not included the intro which is mainly wind instruments/singer.
  18. Ok............hang on..........
  19. I could do one but you'll never get it!!!!
  20. Hmmmmm, the earth won't stop spinning on its axis; and guitardists won't appreciate they're part of an ensemble.......
  21. Did the guitarist turn down, and the drummer play a bit quieter or did that suggestion (excuse the pun) fall on deaf ears?
