1. Another Motown Funk Brother has left us. His musical contribution to us all will live on. My thoughts are with his family & friends
2. It was Ian Bairnson on guitar. David Gilmour introduced Kate to the record company, but didn't play on the album. I actually played bass with Ian Bairnson a couple if years back. He was back in Edinburgh visiting family with his wife. He played his blue Paul Reed Smith guitar on the gig, and sounded fantastic. Great guy.
3. Hopefully you'll be fine once your actually out there making some noise mate. Let us know how it goes
4. I'm just sitting at home playing my bass and have just thought about the fact that I started playing around age 15. Here I am now, aged 48, and I love playing bass every bit now as I did back then. That is all.
5. I know how you felt in regards to the bass when it was first given to you. I'm glad enough time has now passed for you to enjoy the instrument on it's own merits. The very first bass I ever played was a '74 Jazz Bass which was owned by my friend Jimmy Davidson. This would have been around 79/80 when I was 15. Jimmy was in his mid 20's at the time. The bass seemed HUGE to me at the time, with the strings feeling like ropes. Anyhow, a couple of years ago around December Jim wasn't feeling too good. He went to the doc who diagnosed cancer. Sadly, he passed away in the following February. The family gave the bass to me. I had it restored to the original specifications as jimmy had set the bass up for BEAD tuning, installed brass nut, and had an 80's brass bridge fitted. Martin at The Gallery installed a genuine early 70's Fender nut, and fitted a pristine early 70's Fender bridge (which was donated by Mo Foster). I had the original ashtrays also. The bass looked, played and sounded fantastic. However, I couldn't appreciate it for what it was at the time as it was always "Jimmy's bass" in my eyes. I loaned it to my friend Paul Turner who used it on various gigs with Jamiroquai, Shuffler, and even Take That (when he depped for Lee Poneroy on a German TV show). I got it back last month from Paul as enough time had passed whereby I can now enjoy the bass as being a great vintage bass. It'll always have the association with my friend Jim, but it feels like "mine" also now (if that makes sense?). 6. I'm sure like everyone else, the "favourite albums" for bass changes from week to week. So, for now, here's some of my current favourites: Peter Gabriel - Secret World Live Tony Levin on this album is wonderful http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiu6RMMNERs&sns=em Rush - Exit Stage Left http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ker-C8FE2c&sns=em
7. You'll receive a PM from me in a couple of minutes mate
8. I use my rack mounted Aguilar DB680 preamp, powered by a Chevin ProControl 1200, Korg rack tuner, feeding in to an Aguilar DB410 cab
9. Great! I love seeing step by step threads like this. Keep us updated as to the progress mate
10. I just use whichever bass I'm enjoying at that particular time. All my basses are worth over a grand each. I've always thought that my basses are there to be played, not just looked at! What about the value of your bass amp rig? Mine is about 3-4 thousand worth?
11. My friend Lex Sadler has a couple of great looking Warwick Streamers in all-White finish:
12. Allparts http://www.allparts.uk.com/online-shop/guitar-bass-parts/neck-parts/binding-etc-c-277_1_125_312.html Or you could try David Dyke Luthier Supplies?
13. I started off around age 15 and played in a church band for a fair few years which was a fantastic start as it taught me to play by ear, to listen to the rest of the musicians, to change songs at a moment's notice.
14. I love the way really thin nitro finishes sink into the grain of the wood. When I flatted the Shell Pink on the body a couple of months ago, it was a mirror flat, glass like finish. I wanted the finish to be ultra thin so that the wood on the neck and body could resonate really freely. On the '62 Jazz Bass refinish I used more nitro coats so that the finish would remain "glassy". On thus one, I wanted more of a retro feel (without the relic style abrasion and chipping). Due to the fact that nitrocellulose is an "evaporative finish" rather than a "modern" finish which relies upon the chemicals in the finish reacting to create the final coats, the nitro reduces in thickness, thereby causing the body finish to nicely sink into the grain. 15. Looking good matey!! It's great seeing the colour being applied. Although, as you say, the waiting for weeks to let the lacquer dry before final flatting and buffing us a real pain, huh? I'm in the same boat with my Shell Pink 50's style P-Bass. I should have mine assembled in a few weeks. Keep us up to date with how everything goes.
16. I just bought the boxset on eBay. Brand new delivered from Irvine, California. Cost? £24.97 with free delivery -result!!! Here's a link to the seller: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110905212506?redirect=mobile

18. Hi mate, the tuners are actually cross head - must be the low-res iPhone pic that made them look like slot heads Here's a link to the neck plate supplier I used. http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=261048466823
19. Nah, I got it via eBay USA. it cost around £20 including the delivery. Expensive for a neck plate, but I thought it was a nice touch.
20. Generic Fender models, as mentioned above, have a "pick the serial number out of the bag" method of allocation. Therefore, you can't identify the details from the serial number. However, if you have a Fender Custom Shop instrument, you can email the Custom Shop with the serial number and they will supply you with the exact build specification sheet for that specific instrument. It's a very cool feature which I've been able to utilise a few times with my own instruments.
21. The green bass looks VERY cool mate! As for the costoif my pink bass, it'll be around £600 I think. As for dressing the neck pocket - the neck heel is about 0.5mm too wide for the pocket, so I'll have Chris McIntyre finely adjust it so that the neck fits super snug and perfectly aligned. I am really looking forward to getting it assembled. I'll be seeing Chris w/c 30th July (he's about to head off on holiday and doesn't return until Friday 27th you see).
