Thomastik flatwounds. And why I hate them
kevin_lindsay replied to risingson's topic in Accessories and Misc
I tried the T.I.s myself and really disliked them. The tension was too rubbery for me, and I didn't like the sound. I prefer flats that give a big fundamental "boom" rather than the Thomastik's "dunk". -
How do you find the flat fingerboard when playing?

Can't remember if I've posted a pic of my pink P-Bass? So, just in case I haven't, here it is: I used it for recording last week - at the studio of Wet Wet Wet's guitarist Graeme Duffin. It's a converted building literally 5 minutes from my house. The engineer, Sandy, who worked on the Wets' hits loved the instrument's sound, which was a really nice compliment.

For me it was Jean Jacques Burnel from The Stranglers. I heard that grunty P-Bass and thought "I want to do THAT"! Then, on New Year's Eve 1981 I went see The Police in concert at the Ingliston Exhibition Centre in Edinburgh. The support band was Jools Holland just after he'd left Squeeze. The bass player was an unknown guy who just blew my mind. I'd never seen anyone play with such dexterity before. It completely changed my perception of what a bassist could be. The player? A young Pino Palladino.

Great! I love seeing instruments take shape.

Custom (Fender style) Headstock Decals - Where please?
kevin_lindsay replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
When applying the decal, be careful as the Rothko ones are very thin, so they can tear easily. When theyre on the headstock, they may look a bit wrinkly, but thst disappears as the water evaporates. To seal the decal in place, apply very light mist coats over it once its dried out. If you apply too much lacquer / finish, the decal will wrinkle up again. be careful, and take your time, and you'll end up with a fantastic lookjng headstock mate. -
Olympic White 66/62 style Jazz Bass build
kevin_lindsay replied to kevin_lindsay's topic in Build Diaries
Headstock front has been shaped, and the front position pearl dot markers have been installed. Next up will be installing the black side dots, radius the fingerboard, drilling the stepped tuning head holes, then profiling the rear of the neck. Anyone near Hoddesdon, herts.....
kevin_lindsay replied to sprocketflup's topic in General Discussion
There's a couple of sellers who provide various sized shipping boxes for guitars and basses. Might be worthwhile getting one from them? http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=281169544583 http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=331015851610 -
First ever bass refinish/Mod- All Finished!
kevin_lindsay replied to Lord Sausage's topic in Build Diaries
Yeah, get a face mask. The first finish I did using nitro, I didn't use one and I ended up in hospital every couple of days for around 3 weeks as my breathing stopped. Turns out that it was a combination of the fine overspray congealing in my lungs, and a reaction to the fumes. No fun!!!! And the conditionninly happened about 3 weeks after the spraying was compkete. Be careful. -
Looks great
Drop Chris an email. Each neck is considered on its own merits. -

Ron Kirn simply takes standard Fender neckplates and stamps whatever you want onto them. They're expensive for what they are, but it's a nice finishing touch. If you're looking to get something engraved onto your own plate, drop an email to some local jewellers, you might find that they'd do nit for a reasonable price? -

I just wanted a number that was like a '66. I could have had an "R" prefix one like a Custom Shop instrument, but I just thought I'd do the same as Paul's for a bit of fun. There was no real reason behind using the same one as his, I just needed a suitable number, and as Paul was at the other end of the phone, I simply asked him what his number was. -

You don't like the neck plate? I got it via eBay from Ron Kirn in the USA. -

Okay, Chris has just completed the binding on the neck Here we go: Here's the neck blank cut to shape, the fingerboard and the binding material. Oh, and here's the truss rod here's the fingerboard getting cut to shape - edges trimmed (with to low end being cut to shape following the headstock outline). The body end will be rounded off also Chris then attached the fingerboard to the neck blank with double sided tape. He then used a router bit to take the fingerboard edges in by 2mm to follow the exact shape of the neck outline. The fingerboard was then removed from the neck blank to allow for the binding to be glued on Then, with the binding attached, the fingerboard was glued in place the fingerboard, when it has been profiled and oiled, will be really dark and chocolate-ey. next stage will be to have the front pearl dots installed, side black position markers installed in the binding, fingerboard profiled, headstock front shaped for the slope from the nut to the headstock face, and then having the back of the neck profiled. The tuner holes will also need to be drilled - double stepped to accommodate the front edge bushings. -
Looking very good!!

Here's Pauls headstock: and here's the decal for mine: For the lacquer, I'm using Steve Robinson's great aerosol cans: To keep the bass in good condition, I thought I'd get a nice Fender case: I'll post pics of the neck once its complete, and will detail the lacquer application, and the final assembly and setup once it's all ready to go. -

Rumple - it'll be a "dot and bound" '66 style rather than blocks.
