1. Lozz, they're only bits of wood, metal and plastic. The guys who have them are good friends who'll look after them. Plus they're insured anyhow!! Hahaha
2. I've got a fair few basses which I can use whenever the situation requires them. Saying that, I prefer my instruments to be used, so some of them are on loan to friends (who are people I know will look after them!!) At home I've only got a P-Bass, USA reissue '62 stack knob Jazz (which I'm refinishing tight now), and my fretless Stingray. Out on loan are: My 1974 Fender Jazz Bass (Paul Turner from Jamiroquai has it right now - had it over a year, I should really try to prise it back out of his grasp! Hahaha) Rickenbacker 4001 - Fireglo 1966 Fender P-Bass sunburst I've also got some old Fender and Gibson guitars on loan (I've only got my Fender Eric Johnson Strat and Custom Shop Fender Nocaster at home). Oh yeah, I've also got my double bass at home too. Never gets used, but looks good in the corner!! Hahaha I've had basses in the past which were really nice, but didn't get used, so I gave them away to young guys who showed "potential".: Custom Shop Shell Pink P-Bass - given to an incredible young guy I met in London years ago. Can't remember his name, but he was an incredibly funky player Fender 5 string Jazz with D-Audio active circuit and full SIMS LEDs installed - sent that to a guy in Perth, Western Australia as a freebie. I'm stilling touch with that guy (Lex Sadler) who now lives in Manhattan, and still has, and uses , the bass. Jaydee GA24 fretless - gave that to a young guy called Rick James in London a few years back. I don't know much about him, but I was told at Thr time that he was a real shining light, he was pretty young when I gave him the bass, but I never actually met or spoke to him, so I font know the full story. Martin D28 acoustic guitar - gave that to a relative in Australia when I was over one time.
3. This is a sentiment I think many need to think about. Saying "f*** you!" to someone after life has hit them hard is something I find appalling.
4. Some more pics with the ashtrays in place, just to give an idea if how it will eventually look:
5. I had a slight rub through of the Shell Pink when flatting it earlier this morning. Lower rear bout on the back of the body, and on the tips of both horns. I've re-sprayed very thin lacquer onto those areas. I hope everything work's out cool later for final flatting and keying for the application of the clear coats. If I have another rub through, I'll have to order more Shell Pink lacquer as I've now used the last of the can I had. Fingers crossed for later!!!
6. Pink coats almost done. I'll flatten the finish tomorrow morning and if needs be, I'll spray some more coats. If all's good after Flatting, I'll apply the clear coats and leave the body to dry for a week or two, then final flat & buff the finish. Here's a quick pic to give an idea about how it'll look with the plate in situ:
7. Little bit more pink We're getting there!!
8. Body has been prepped with White primer. Now it's tine to apply the Shell Pink lacquer - slowly does it!!!
9. That's the neck done. I'm awaiting delivery of the appropriate Fender Jazz Bass waterslide decal (that's just applied on top of the clearcoat - like Fender does). The back of the neck is really nice feeling. I've used a very thin lacquer layer, but it still feels nice and smooth. As I mentioned earlier, the maple on the neck has tinted nicely due to UV from sunlight. Here's a pic of the back of the headstock to show the comparison between the exposed wood, and the wood masked by the tuners. I'll be applying the pink to the body later today (the body has been prepped with White primer - pics to follow.
10. The pink on the headstock jas been wet & dried to a smooth finish, the masking tape has been removed also. I then finely sanded the headstock edge to ensure there were no sharp paint edges . I also used a fine cloth with cellulose thinners and carefully wiped the headstock sides to ensure no overspray was on the wood. Then, it was time to begin applying the clear lacquer onto the neck. Due to the sun ageing the maple previously, I can simply apply clear, untinted lacquer. I'm going to keep the neck finish very thin to get a better, woody tone (I'm so glad the thick, heavily tinted lacquer which was originally on there has been removed!!)
11. Spraying in the house wouldn't be s good move. When I did the Surf Green Strat I did spray at first in a storage room at home, but the dust created from the overspray gets everywhere!! What a mess!! Best do it outside, or in a garage or shed. Make sure the area gets well ventilated. Also, if you're gonna spray outside avoid windy conditions on case dust gets blown onto the lacquer.
12. Cool! The Get Here track is s great one. I love Pino's harmonics and fretted note volume swell that he uses when the bass first comes in. Happy practicing mate.
13. My cousin and his wife (originally from here in the UK) lived in the states. When his wife got pregnant, and the birth was approaching, they couldn't afford the medical fees it would entail, so they had to come back to the uk instead.
14. The joy of USA healthcare. Unlike here in the UK where we have the luxury of NHS care, over the other side of the Atlantic, going to hospital cab easily result in life destroying bills
15. Serial numbers are on the neckplate. The headstock decal simply has patent numbers underneath
16. I'm a bass player and I'd rather hear someone playing BASS rather than widdling about like a second rate lead guitarist. I love playing thumping bass that shifts some air and gets the groove going, and I get a real buzz out of hearing other bassists doing the sane, be it anyone from Bernard Edwards to Cliff Williams!!!
17. http://www.swaytheband.com/meet_the_band.php Featuring my friend Nick Owen on bass. They're a great outfit - Richard Branson has used them quite a few times in various locations around the globe
18. Yeah I'll be putting a fender decal on the headstock - exactly the same type that was on there originally. I don't think I'll get the pink on the body until the weekend, but I have to say, I'm looking forward to seeing it applied!!
19. Pink now being applied to the headstock. I'll wet & dry the headstock to get the pink totally smooth before applying the clear lacquer. I'm about to apply the White primer to the body, then that'll get the Shell pink applied to it. Everything is moving along nicely!
20. If the seller doesn't provide the courier and you have to do if yourself, use http://www.interparcel.com/
21. Back of the headstock. The maple has been nicely lightly aged even through the heavily coloured lacquer that was originally on the neck. Okay, White primer being applied to the headstock in preparation for the Shell Pink application
22. Thanks mate, I'm really pleased with the Eric Johnson Strat. I hope this Jazz Bass turns out equally good!!
23. Here's the original headstock lacquer - ultra orangey yellow!! Okay, it's coming off!! The matching headstock is gonna happen. I wiped off the lacquer from the whole neck The neck heel stamps have remained intact even after wiping off the lacquer!!
