Okay, the spraying of the nitro lacquer will commence soon. I need to fine sand the surfaces to prepare them, but hopefully it'll be underway tomorrow. Actually, PM me your address and I'll post you a tracing of my plate. The screw hole will still be in the correct place in relation to the neck pocket.

Ah, I see. I've got a mid 50s style one, but that has body edge contours so the plate is slightly smaller than the 51 style. Just buy one without the hole, and use your existing plate as a template to mark where the tugbar hole is located. It's only a 2 minute job to get it sorted.

Rosewood has a slightly warmer sound as it's not as dense as maple. Maple is inherently brighter. hoeever, finish can affect the sound. If you have lacquer on the frets, that would provide a softer cushion over the hard metal frers, so the tone would be less bright. Saying that, lacquer is usually scraped off the frets before assembly.

Usually avquick setup solves the problem. I remember Many years ago I can remember buying my first 5 string bass. I went with another musician friend tontry out the various basses on offer. I opted for the Fender Jazz 5 as it had the best sound, but played like a complete pig - high action, too much neck relief. However, 5 minutes once I got it home and the neck was straight, action was lowered, and the intonation reset. In fact, it's still being played (albeit by a bassist friend of mine in NYC after I gave it to him). Wood moves, and with Fenders coming from overseas, it's inevitable that dome tweaking is required.

I'll have more pics to upload in a couple of days as I'm headimg through to Edinburgh on Monday 7th October to pick up the new neck from Chris McIntyre. Then, I'll start to spray the nitro lacquer on the body, and on the neck.

What colour is your bass? Ive got a nitro plate that has turned slightly creamy - might be suitable for you? EDIT - actually, I've just looked, the 69 has a different screwhole layout from my mid 50s style. Sorry bud.

If you leave the finish for another few eeeks, it'll be absolutely fine mate.

I tried the T.I.s myself and really disliked them. The tension was too rubbery for me, and I didn't like the sound. I prefer flats that give a big fundamental "boom" rather than the Thomastik's "dunk".

How do you find the flat fingerboard when playing?

Can't remember if I've posted a pic of my pink P-Bass? It's a converted building literally 5 minutes from my house. The engineer, Sandy, who worked on the Wets' hits loved the instrument's sound, which was a really nice compliment.

For me it was Jean Jacques Burnel from The Stranglers. I heard that grunty P-Bass and thought "I want to do THAT"! Then, on New Year's Eve 1981 I went see The Police in concert at the Ingliston Exhibition Centre in Edinburgh. The support band was Jools Holland just after he'd left Squeeze. The bass player was an unknown guy who just blew my mind. I'd never seen anyone play with such dexterity before. It completely changed my perception of what a bassist could be. The player? A young Pino Palladino.

When applying the decal, be careful as the Rothko ones are very thin, so they can tear easily. When theyre on the headstock, they may look a bit wrinkly, but thst disappears as the water evaporates. To seal the decal in place, apply very light mist coats over it once its dried out. If you apply too much lacquer / finish, the decal will wrinkle up again. be careful, and take your time, and you'll end up with a fantastic lookjng headstock mate.
