  1. The Market for the Conklin instruments is a niche one (as it is for any 'out of the ordinary' instrument maker). Why don't you just buy direct from Bill?
  2. I remember learning the baselines to the whole of the 'Cupid & Psyche' album by Scritti Politti in the 1980's. Learning the keyboard bass on my bass guitar really hey me away from my usual 'Grid patterns' on the fingerboard. I also remember figuring out the baseline to 'Welcome To The Pleasuredome' by Frankie Goes To Hollywood. A great 12 minutes of grooving with a main figure that has your fingers moving around the fingerboard, and loads of syncopated baselines throughout the track. Great fun. On fact, I'm off to play along with it again right now!!!
  3. It's still a great dhow as it'd the only live music programme on UK tv these days. A comment earlier mentioned that the standard of bands on the dhow these days is a reflection of theistic business these days. I have to agree, surely it's time for a new movement, in the way we experienced punk, new romantic, electro-pop or the like in the past? Or maybe today's youth have been brainwashed by Simon Cowell and the modern obsession with 'celebrity' rather than talent?
  4. Aaaaagh!!!!! I never even knew this thread existed. Just found out that the gig in Glasgow is tonight, and it's already started! If I'd have seen this even a couple of hours ago, I'd have been there for sure.
  5. You need also to make mention of Pete the Fish's appalling taste in footwear - his penchant for White patent leather loafers still gives me nightmares! Hahaha (sorry Pete, you know I love you really!)
  6. Yup, if you're relatively new to bass, 'try before you buy' is very good advice!! I also remembered the last few guitars I bought in the States over the past year and a half - Olympic White USA Jazz Bass, another Olympic White Jazz with matching headstock, fretless Musicman Stingray honeyburst, and a Gibson Custom Shop ES-335. All bought unplayed and delivered to my Manhattan address. I guess quality control of most manufacturers is pretty good these days as all of the instruments were great. Saying that, I always 'tweak' my instruments to my own preference whenever I get one!
  7. I just realised that I haven't gone into a guitar store and tried a bass before buying it since the late 1990's. All the basses I've bought have been commissioned instruments. Pay a deposit, agree the spec and pay the balance before getting the instrument. I've bought quite a few basses this way (8 Sei Basses, 4 Nordy basses, 2 Bravewood, Wes Steed P-Bass, Bruce Johnson Ampeg style fretless, fretless Stingray to my specs - still awaiting completion of that one). Anyone else find that they've inclined toward setting their own spec in regards to instruments?
  8. I had the exact same rig around 2002 and I was fortunate never to have any problems with mine. I had mine in full flight cases, and sold it to the owner of the 'American Guitar Store' who I then bought an Alembic Mark King from. I wonder where that rig ended up?
  9. Martin's made me 8 Sei basses over the years, I think I should think about the next one to order? The basses shown on here are gorgeous. For those who have been fortunate enough to order a Sei Bass, the process of material selection is addictive, huh?
  10. Lightning Bolt are art with a Silent 'f'!!! Hahaha

  12. What a load of old bollocks!
  13. Ah, I see! So it would be the one on page 32 of John's 'Bass Culture' book?
  14. Graeme playing his P-Bass on the breakthrough hit 'Wishing I Was Lucky' was a glorious sound.
  15. That would have been John's 'Fender-bird' hybrid bass
