you're right, i've lost track! i tried those stubbies when i played guitar, i can't get a hold of them, they are small aren't they. i was thinking of a regular sized pick i suppose, but chunky!

This thread has had me raking through my stash of plectrums. I've been quite taken with my fatter picks, but i've only got to about 1.3mm. Has anyone tried a really FAT pick? Like 2 or 3mm?

There's not a lot to choose from in that price range, unless you go secondhand. New I'd definitely go separate amp and speakers: £80 amp from Richer Sounds http://www.richersou...b-topaz-am1-blk Speakers: £60 JBL Control 1 http://www.richersou...l-contorl-1-blk OR £90 Gale Gold Monitor Mk2 http://www.richersou...le-goldmonitbch Few quid on cable and you're sorted. + you can hook up a cd player etc without the bother of a mixer.
No. I actually use this bit. Or is that what you meant? That's just how I picked it up over 30 years ago so I don't think I'm going to change now.
that's what i understood you to mean too, good diagram actually they are quite comfortable round that way aren't they?

Used Turntable advice, any experts out there?
I totally agree that the P3 is far better than the P2 or NAD but the op won't get one for the £130 he wants to spend on a turntable. Also i'd want to a new cartridge which would be another £70 for a Rega Bias 2 or similar. For the budget available the P2 or NAD is an excellent choice and is possible to be found for that sort of money. The Pioneer PL12 was the next step up from a Garrard SP25 in it's day and not up there with the performance of the either the P2 or the NAD.
I agree I would definitely buy a new cartridge, or just a stylus if the cartridge was ok. My thinking was that as you tend to hang onto turntables for many many years, then I would advise saving the extra cash now and get a 2nd hand P3 as it is a noticeable difference up in build quality and sound reproduction. Probably not night and day though I agree. -

No disrespect intended to the posters above but I have owned a P3 and it is in my opinion much better than the P2 or the Nad 533 (friends of mine have owned both these models) and worth saving up a bit more to get, if you want to go down that Rega style route. I expect a half decent cartridge in the P2 would be fine but as you've already had the P3 then you'll definitely miss the nice glass platter! I don't know that Pioneer turntable and I like its retro looks! But there is a lot more to go wrong on that kind of turntable so if price is king then maybe better sticking to the Rega style where there isn't really much to go balls up? My P3 is actually under the bed as I got fed up changing speed and replaced it, but I can't bring myself to sell it yet as it was a present... -
In the last couple of years I've gone back to picks after 20+ years using fingers. My favoured ones are Hercos (I do use others but always come back to the Hercos) and I alternate between the 0.5 & 0.75. But - I use the side of them to play with, not the point - always have. Am I alone in this? Never seen any mention of anyone else doing it.
you mean the rounded 'point' (where you are supposed to hold it) as opposed to the sharp point i presume? (not actually holding the pick on its side??!) yes i sometimes try playing with the rounded edge. i also have a bunch of the george dennis picks that come with a very rounded edge - almost like a 1p radius. it is good for giving a softer 'pluck', but usually i like a very sharp point as i find it more accurate for my style.

These are my absolute favourite picks but have been difficult to get. Just found a seller on ebay so I've stocked up again (coming from Canada but you still get 10 for about £3.50) George Dennis Sharp 0.88 They are nylon I think so they have a bit of flex, and they have raised grip so they don't slip. I love them!

What a twat.

OP - i've got SO many plectrums lying around i'll happily send you a pile of options - big small thick thin round sharp etc. PM me if you would like them. btw not that it matters but for sake of accuracy i discovered it is .88 sharp point i like, not .73 as previously stated! the sharp point is very important for me, i find it really helps accuracy!

how low is considered low? how do you measure it?

Will bought my LaBella strings, excellent transaction, thanks

Where is it made? What's the serial? Can we get some pic's of the bridge without the cover on? I'd go for just replacing the saddles and screws as this would be cheapest and most authentic but would be good to see what's going on under there If you want to replace the pickups I'd personally put fender vintage pickups (as they are cheap and very good) and you could get new pots and jack + wiring from the chap on this forum (Kiogon I think) that does it if you need to.

http://www.spectrumguitarfinishes.co.uk/solid-colours/ I thought the quality of work on display on this site looked excellent and they have been very helpful and efficient in quoting me a few price options.

.73 here too, and a normal size pick, not one of those giant triangles! Each to their own but I find those extremely horrible
