1.
That sounds possible. I've got 760FS on a Precision bass at the moment and they are tense enough I think to take a drop to DGCF without becomeing too loose. The D certainly works on the D-Tuner.
thanks for the info.
2. I was passing through Tonbridge the other day (which looks about 10 miles from you, maybe less) and there is a shop there called American Guitars. Its got quite a few nice basses in there and the shop is run by a very nice chap who I chatted with for ages. http://www.americanguitarsuk.com edit - just to point out they have loads on their website, but only a selection of these on display in the shop.
3.
Didn't fancy the higher tension string idea? Si
Yes that's the route I'm going, I've got some LaBella flats coming from Thomann (as I had a €40 voucher to spend!). They only had the 760FS standard in stock (045, 065, 085, 105) and I probably would have gone for the 760FM set which is a touch thicker, but I'm guessing that a whole tone down with the FS set might give similar tension to the TIs?? Trial and error perhaps. edit - just read the post above and perhaps i'm being a bit hopeful with the 760FS...
4. i'm looking for an un-drilled gold anodised pickguard for a precision. i can find drilled but i'm not sure they'll fit my P as its MIJ and the pickguards come from USA.
5. Just bought this from a fellow basschatter to conduct a tuning down experiment. Experiment didn't work so I'm moving it on if anyone is interested. Its the low B from a JF345 set of TI Flats. Barely used. £5 posted
6. results are in (having got hold of a TI Flat B string) - BEAD standard tuning - I strung the bass but I'd need to re-cut all the nut slots and having now tried a proper B string I know that I'm not bothered about going down that low. - Tuning up a BEAD set - I tried tuning up one whole step to C and even that was way too much tension for me. - Tuning down a standard set of TI Flats - I've tried this before but I did it again to confirm and going down to D is much too floppy for me. I do like the extra low notes available going down to C# so i think I'll look for another set of flats that can take that without becoming too thick to fit the nut.
7.
Is it just me, or (sound recording quality aside) is this not awful?
I went to see Blur in Hyde Park a few years ago. A crowd signing along can be great, but when they sing at full volume to every single word of every single song..... I ended up as far back as i could get just so I could hear the band over the out of tune terrace style din... This seems like the same thing, I'm not sure I could take it!
8. great idea. i've got lots of guitar strings.
9. Charles Mingus - Beneath the Underdog is really great and quite shocking in parts. Alex James - Bit of a Blur is a great read if you like the band. Paul McCartney - Many Years From Now i read this ages ago but i seem to remember its very good
10. i don't mind the £20 yearly fee, but i'd rather pay a small fee per listing - eg £2 - but don't know if this would generate the required income.
11.
Didn't like them either, for exactly the same reason...so the Stone Roses weren't even original at being unlikeable.
There are very few truths in music, but here are three: The Smiths were brilliant The Stone Roses first album was brilliant Lady In Red is terrible
12. btw i've been reading about the REDDI and it has great reviews but that is serious money for a DI ! but might be nice to run my analogue synths through too.... don't want to start GASing for a reddi! help...
13. friend of mine collected a few of these, i think he's got at least three. he brought them along to my studio once and they were great! let me know if you need more info and i'll ask him.
14. you can invert the phase of a channel in logic, i think its in the 'gain' plugin.
15. you would sort out phase issues in the DAW. what are you using?
16. Thanks for the replies. I don't have a huge selection of mics which is why I wanted to avoid mic-ing the cab but maybe my Sure Beta52 kick drum mic might work. Other than that i've got SM57 and SM58 s. Valve DI box sounds interesting, I know some DI boxes get pretty exotic. As do specialist mic pre-amp channel strips... I'll do some testing, might post the results up here for comment if I'm feeling brave.
17. I'm running Logic studio using a Motu 828mkII a/d and a Focusrite Octopre MkII. I also have an Eventide 7600 which i could feasibly use as an a/d in for its high quality converters, but not tried this yet. I can plug my bass (Fender Precision) straight in to the Focusrite, or I can use the DI output from my Markbass LM3. I'm wondering on what options pro's use in the studio and if I can improve my recording chain. I've heard of people going through an Avalon preamp (U5?). Also putting it through a high rack quality compressor on the way in. I don't really want to mic the cabinet. Tips appreciated Cheers Ted
18.
Pino is my biggest influence as a bass player. I lean more towards his RnB/Neo Soul work because that's more the style I play in bands and projects, but all of his playing I just find incredible and appropriate for the musical situation. Here's some tracks off of José James's album 'No Beginning No End' that he played on. I understand this may not be to everyones taste but I think his playing on this album is great and I recommend it not just for the playing but for José James' brilliant songwriting. Pino featured on all of the tracks, co-wrote one and produced the album too! Amazing musician...
love this he has now just sold one more cd. i can't get enough of this kind of bass/drum interaction.
19. oh yes i hadn't thought about the nut slots... thanks for the info
20. My Precision is strung with JF344 TI Flats, standard tuning. I've recently been listening to Pino Palladino's bass playing with D'Angleo and other 'nu soul' RnB type stuff where apparently he's tuning down to D or C# and using heavy gauge LaBella strings. TI strings are already lower tension than usual and not very thick gauge so they don't really work tuned down. Thomastik don't offer different gauges for some reason, the four string set is only available as 043, 056, 070, 100. Out of curiosity, do you reckon I could put the bottom strings from a Thomastik 5-String set on? This would be 056, 070, 100, 136. Tuned down a whole step or more maybe it would work?? Or would it be TOO thick?! I just wondered if anyone had already tried it.
