1. hello. just picked up a lovely '57 RI JV-Fender Squire. all original, including the single ply white pickguard - but i don't really like the pickguard. Compared to the 3 ply i'm used to on my other basses, this seems cheap and doesn't lay flat on the body (i.e. it lifts up a tad between the screws and looks cheap) what do you think would be a good replacement? can i get a thicker single ply? or 3 ply? and what's the best way to get the holes to match? mine has 12 holes, but the new replacements seem to have 10. should i get it undrilled?? any advice appreciated. ted
2. great, i'll go there! i found some other very complimentary reviews of his Plek machine fret work so sounds good.
3. I have slightly sharp fret edges on my new (old) bass, i think its just a touch of wood shrinkage (maple neck). I'd like a pro to give them some attention so the bass feels as good as it should. I live in Kingston, Surrey - I've used Charlie Chandlers Guitar Workshop for setting up my guitars before but nothing else. Anyone here had them do any fretwork? Any other recommendations nearby? I don't want to courier the bass. Cheers Ted
4. withdrawn from here, now on ebay if you fancy it: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121066240461?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649
5.
Demn you! I hate E Major! You only wrote that to provoke me! Clown!
Oh yeah! You can stick your A Sharp Diminished 7th where the sun don't shine!!
6.
I can't and won't deny the influence The Beatles had on the popular culture of several generations. Musicologically speaking, I think they provided nice to awesome pop songs, some of which were among the best that pop music has brought forward, but art it ain't. I'm here using my Dutch definition of art, as in that only the very best, most profound, art-developing music is considered art.
Interesting and well put. Debating whether the songs are art or not is a red herring in my opinion. For me The Beatles work celebrates the simple joy of music. That's why it was and is still so popular and will more than likely remain that way for hundreds, maybe thousands of years to come . . . . . . (post ends with final E major chord from Day In Th Life) . . . ..
7.
Although we are mods, it doesn't mean that we can't have opinions about 'stuff' in the same way as everyone else can. Johngh was simply stating what his own personal feelings on the subject are.
agreed! what a large thread for a 'theoretical problem'?!! and guess what, i just bought a bass from ebay! don't worry, i'm keeping it
8. I had one of these and it was fantastic. Bit of regret over that sale! I hope you're sure you want to shift it!
9.
A TINY minority of posts and members do this, don't get it out of proportion you stinking ugly fishface with sh*t shoes.
LOL
10. i totally agree about professional traders, and i'm sure pretty much everyone on this thread will agree that they aren't very welcome and don't do the site any service, although personally i've not seen any examples of this 'flipping'... what i do object to is this notion that as a non-trader bass player, buying and selling a few basses per year, you are morally obliged to sell it for the same price you bought it, and now this is even being suggested by the mods?! it is for example in my opinion totally reasonable to think that some fender MIJ signature models are increasing (slightly) in value purely because they are becoming more sought after now production has moved to mexico. i don't think its unreasonable or insulting or anti-comunity to put it up at £100 more than you bought it for a year ago, knowing full well that what usually happens is that the seller is going to make you an offer of what they consider reasonable anyway. i put my MIJ Geddy Jazz up for £600 having paid £500 six months ago. it sold for £530 inc post, which once you take off the postage strings and setup equates to roughly £30 loss. its hardly the housing boom! and yet me and a few other people on here are getting labled as the 'types that will screw you into the ground' over price just because we don't object to someone trying to make a few quid on an occasional deal. i think a bit of perspective is in order!
11. Is there anyone actually doing this mythical 'flipping' apart from the one example mentioned above? I'm not an expert but I don't see any evidence of this on the site. All I see is a large amount of nice but unsold basses steadily getting reduced in price, while we argue about the terrifying prospect of someone making fifty quid profit The prices always seem pretty keen here and anything that isn't just drops down the listings unsold doesn't it? Maybe these Professional Flippers are the members who can barely operate their digital cameras and can't get a single decent picture into their advert!
12. i got very nice service from the guy that works on the set-ups downstairs - we chatted about strings. upstairs was different where a 'anything i can help you with mate?' wouldn't have gone amiss! gotta say that their 'price match' is a bit suspect (certainly for strings), and they advertise it big time on their site so they can't blame people for asking.
13.
Personally I think there's something callous about a member of this forum buying a bass on here cheap with the sole intent of selling it on at profit to someone who could have had it at the price the profiteering member did.
So this unspecified 'someone' is now being forced to buy the bass for more money? Presumably the 'profiteering member' was able to jump in and snap up this bass because they are so rich they can surf the internet with a super fast computer?!! The reality is that basses are hanging around for ages in the marketplace, despite a lot of attractively low prices. The amount you can pick up a barely played US Precision for example is amazing. The only two problems I've had here trying to buy a bass is that having agreed a deal the seller has either sold it someone else, or has decided to withdraw it.
14. I can't seem to upload pics?? but it looks exactly like this: http://www.pmtonline.co.uk/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/1000x1000/5e06319eda06f020e43594a9c230972d/7/7/77691_1/pmtonline-squier-st77691-31.jpg except its white
15. Fender Geddy Jazz has a famously thin (front to back) neck. I had one, it played like a dream
16. Cheers Actually I put an ad up the other day and the basschat uploader was back working ok, but maybe its not on all browsers.
17. You can put 'withdrawn' in the title if you edit the first post
18. Andy Rourke - an ex guitarist turned pick-playing bassist, and therefore great inspiration for all us other ex guitarist pick-playing bassists!
