1. does anyone have any real world comparisons between playing a Barefaced Big Twin 2 and a Big Baby 2 in a loud (twin guitar, loud drummer) rock band ? i.e. is a single BB2 capable of enough volume, does it need to be raised / angled up if it sits on the floor so you can hear it etc etc ? i ask because i'm going to replace my Eden 2x10 wedge cab with one of these cabs (mainly because the Eden weighs the same as a small planet and has the most un-ergonomic single carry handle design i've ever seen) will be used with no PA support 99% of the time. I've had BF cabs in the past (2x Gen2 Compacts) and really liked them but need something a bit more 'full range' for my current setup. I've spoken to Alex and he recommended either of these cabs for my setup (600W powered Kemper rack head) but i blooming well can't make my mind up. Even though it's the powered version I may also add my Crown XLS1500 power amp into the setup - mainly because i can and i like the idea of a backup (plus the extra headroom it gives me). The BT2 would work better with that setup and is wide enough to take the rack (yes I am vain like that and don't like the rack overhanging but it's not a deal-breaker) any opinions from users would be greatly received cheers
2. I started with an LD MEI 100 system (which i still have as a backup) but moved onto a Sennheiser EW300 so although i'm no expert on these things i found the following differences with the systems :- The noise floor is not that much different between them - the EW300 is better but not so you'd notice when playing The EW300 hardware is much sturdier - metal Tx case and a better quality feel about the whole system - having said that, I've had no reliability issues with the LD system it's more that you get the impression the EW300 will stand up to heavier usage More audio / transmission adjustments with the EW300 including the EQ, limiter which i find useful (although with a digital desk and a dedicated Aux feed, less so) Rack mounting hardware a bit sturdier on the EW300 but once it's racked i guess that makes little difference Audio quality is better on the EW300 - this is my subjective opinion - it just sounds better (this is why i'll never write reviews for audio equipment !!). If you're using high-end moulded IEM's then the difference may be more noticeable than with the bundled earphones or SE215's for example. All in all i would say the EW300 is an improvement over the LD but like all things - the more you spend the smaller the perceived improvement. I think it's worth investing in the EW300 (or similarly spec'd systems) if, like me, you like shiny things and you're using it on a regular basis where the extra potential reliability may be a factor.
3. Whatever the numbers, my own personal experiences with an RBI or RPM or both driving an original XLS1500 were that they had no issues fully driving the amp without maxing the volumes of the preamps. They also happened to sound rather epic especially when the two pre's were linked together and dumped into an 8x10 ;-) I still have both preamps and the amp but prefer my Kemper with various profiles of that setup nowadays.
4. New rig to replace all my others. No cab/IEM setup for current band (although I can power my Eden 2x12 with the inbuilt power amp if needed) I've barely scratched the surface of the Kemper but so far, it's bloody awesome. I've profiled my old Eden Navigator preamp and will do the same for my Sansamp RBI & RPM pre's. The factory profiles are very varied and cover just about most situations but I thought I'd profile some of my older gear before i sell it.
5. I used my Chinese made MB200 with two BF gen2 compacts and it was easily loud enough for gigs and sounded great. It then developed a loud hiss, had it replaced under warranty, replacement was a USA made model....utter rubbish quality, dented front panel, same hiss. Upgraded the replacement for a USA made MB800....sounded great but the front panel was dented/scratched, two case screws missing, two others stripped or loose, wobbly control knobs (one of which came off whilst I was turning it). I love the sound (hence why I have GK profiles on my Kemper) but wouldn't touch the 'real' MB series amps now. Reading all the positive posts about these MB series amps leads me to think I've been unlucky but being burnt 3 times leaves a lasting impression
6. This is so very tempting it's getting painful - i'd have to offload my Shuker Jazz, Vigier Passion IV and Kubicki Factor though.
7. has anyone found a UK supplier of replacement cables for the Line 6 Sonic Port yet ? The lightning version is part number 21-34-0240 but apart from Full Compass in the USA i can't find anywhere in the UK that sells them. I always like to have spare cables at gigs and although the one I have seems fine, i'd rather carry a spare as an alternative, can anyone suggest a good IOS interface that has a line out without loads of flying leads (like some of the apogee models) and will connect to my new shiny iPad Air 2 ?. I used the old 30 pin CCK on my iPad 2 but don't know if there is a comparable version for the Air 2
8. Quite possibly the nicest bass I've ever seen. How do I tell the wife that I've got another bass and therefore we can't have a new bathroom without loosing some vital body parts ?
9. Thanks to Russ and his advice I have a shiny new EW300G3 in my rack. Tried it last night and was very impressed. Just need to get some new custom moulded in-ears and I'll be fully happy. I'll be moving the remote antenna to the far left hand side when I get a longer RF cable
10.
No worries - the SE215s will do the job... when you get some new multi driver customs, prepare for your socks to be blown off! No amp on stage = win.
EW300 G3 ordered from Mercury for the double win !! First try tomorrow night (assuming it is delivered on time)
11. will order today i think - at the moment i'm using some SE215's and occasionally some very old ACS moulded types (a very early prototype of the T15 I got from them to test years ago that fitted into my even older ER15 moulded plugs) - they are OK but will be contacting Paul at the Headphone company to get some new multi-driver moulded ones. Having the new desk and playing with no amp on stage means i can now justify a better set of in-ears cheers for the help - this thread has been most enlightening !!
12. that certainly sways things a bit !!! cheers for the link - my credit card is getting nervous....
13. thanks very much for the info - greatly appreciated. i'll look further at the EW300 as we won't be using some of the features on the PSM900 but i do like the replaceable pack antenna on the Shure....swings and roundabouts as you say. we're still getting used to the DL32R but so good so far - it's certainly a step up from our old analogue desk !! cheers
14. Another quick question - I've been using an LD MEI100 for a while now and I'm reasonably happy with it especially now we have a new Mackie DL32R digital desk :-) I'm looking at buying a new IEM system and favourite so far (based solely on reviews which I know is not the most accurate method) is the Shure PSM900 but which frequency version should I be looking at for the UK ?. I've read a fair amount of info on the subject and the available frequency bands (both licenced and in-licenced) but am still a little confused. Any help would be appreciated The other system I've been looking at is the Sennheiser EW300 G3 but I've read a few reports of background hiss but not having heard either system, i don't know how significant it is. Thanks EDIT : I've done a bit more reading and it looks like channel 38 is licensed and 70 is licence-free. Unfortunately the PSM900 doesn't come in a channel 70 version unless someones knows otherwise ?
15. Heard them at the Frankfurt show - their stand was opposite the Marshall booth and although I didn't get to play them myself, they sounded pretty cool. I'm a Tech21 fan anyway having an RBI,RPM and PBDDI so I guess I'll be getting one of these too !. Looks like it will be rack-able aswell as it has the screw holes on the sides.
16. Picked up an Eden D210MBX from work a couple of weeks ago to try the angled cab solution. Seems to do the job very well but of course, my rack doesn't fit on the top !. I use it mainly for small stages and either have it firing back at me like a stage monitor or behind me depending on where we are playing. I should add that we play with PA support all the time so this only really functions as a stage monitor.
17. The low profile jacks do have two solder tabs
18. A collet clamp is generally a better way of securing the cable but putting a collet type clamp in a low profile 90deg jack plug would make it not so low profile. I've had them on my pedalboard for ages now with no issues and I swap and change pedals quite a bit. The only thing I would say is to make sure you use a cable of sufficient diameter to ensure it clamps correctly. I use sommer spirit XXL cable which works very well on my board and with the low profile hicon jacks : http://www.thomann.de/gb/sommer_cable_the_spirit_xxl.htm
19. Used the low profile and standard jacks on my pedalboard and rack for over a year - very good quality, easy to solder and no complaints at all
20. I have used one of the Studiomaster C3X mixers for a couple of years in a similar way you're talking about - I mix my bass, vocals and a general band mix from the desk into my IEM Tx and it works very well. The IEM system has a limiter but the C3X doesn't. There is also no dedicated headphone out from the C3X so I use the headphone monitor out jack on the IEM Tx when running a wired setup or during rehearsal. I looked around for a while for a 1U mixer that had some EQ on each channel and whilst the EQ points are not bass guitar specific it does the job very well. The ability to add a bit of reverb to my vocals and control the balance of the three inputs is very handy. We don't have a digital desk and we only have two aux outs so it was the best way I could think of to get around the limitations of the desk and still have control over my IEM mix When we get around to buying a digital desk I will probably ditch the C3X but for now it works well
21. To the best of my knowledge it was a new unopened one from sounds live (if I remember correctly) - might have been a Friday afternoon/Monday morning special but it was awful.
22. Bit of history - i bought a new (USA made) MB800 last year and whilst i liked the sound and form factor it had the most appalling build quality (it went back immediately) loose control knobs (2 came off when i pulled them very, very gently to check) and a volume pot that was not properly tightened on the front panel missing case screws stripped case screws dents / scratches on the front panel a speakon connector that was so tight you could hardly get a connector in it apart from that - top notch stuff..... i like the form factor because i can rack it in a 1U space and i do like the sound and therefore am contemplating giving them another go. sooooo....my question is - has anyone else had similar quality issues with recently bought GK MB800's ? - their supposed move back to 'made in the USA to control quality blah blah blah' didn't seem to work in this instance - indeed my older (Chinese made) MB200 was flawless in comparison the other amp i'm mulling over is a Carvin BX700 - different sound altogether i would think and a bigger rack space (2U) but might be worth a try.... all opinions welcome cheers.
23. at the risk of repeating what everyone else has said - John built and supplied a replacement wiring set for my Shuker Jazz replacing the vol/mix/tone setup with a vol/vol/tone and I am very happy with [a] the quality of the parts and workmanship, [b] the extremely fast delivery and [c] his patience dealing with my inane questions that he's probably been asked 1000's of times !!! top man - great to deal with and i will be back for more parts when my other basses need some TLC
24. have a bump on me - sorely tempted by this bass having played my cheapo yamaha BB614 last night at rehearsal and realising that i prefer it over many of my much more pricey basses. PM sent
