1. I currently have three very different basses that I am happy to use at band practise as they all sound good. A Bass Collection 335, ATK 805 and my SR5. If a bass works for me and the band in practise I'm happy to take it as a backup.
  2.
Really? If I was the current drummer I'd be very pissed off!
The new drummer wasn't up to speed at that point...no worries. He was desperate for us to record the next one though
  3. Our drummer was no longer in our band when we made our first video. As he played on the recording he returned for the vid... The best solution I reckon.
  4.
I use public transport to travel all over the UK to gigs, and even to Paris earlier in the year. I use a trolley for my gear which carries my combo, pedalboard, cables, MacBook etc.
Where did you get the trolly, I've been looking for something like that for ages?
  5. Nice one, Janice is impressed too
  6.
What strings do you prefer? What style of music do you (mainly) play? Are you a pedal-tastic player, or strictly bass --> amp?
Pedals? I love them and tend to use the amp pretty flat and to use a BB bass pre, octive, envelope and wah. I guess that this is the area where I usually mess with sound. Strings? That's complicated as Status half rounds were my preferred string and I have also used flats. I'm trying Elixir nanowebs at the moment to get a bit of growl back into my sound in addition to thimp! Music Type? well it's proggy and at times heavy. If I was emulating sounds it would be bands like Placebo, muse ...it's probably easier if you judge for your self. 7. I have a couple of Bass Collection SB335 5 string basses. Armed with 2x soapbars the controls are Vol, Pan, active 2 band/treble and bass together with a passive or active switch. I really like their tone and they have plenty of oopph under the bonnet but I don't need two basses that sound identical so would like to differentiate their sound. IIn the past have been content to change sound thought changing strings so where do I start? Pickups? Pre-amp? The good news is that the pups seem like pretty standard 4" x 1.5" I suppose the obvious question is what sort of a sound am I after? Well in the past the basses that I have used are Ibanez with custom barts, Stingrays and G&L's so I'm after a dark sound with character. I'm not keen on typical Delano, Norstrand, emg's....Jazzers generally don't do it for me. Therefore it makes sense to make one of the SB335's sound a darker and more agressive. So where should I start?
  8.
Good stuff. I've heard it said a few times the SGC pre amp lets the bass down. ps Skinnyman I've an SGC 5 stringer I may part with if you're interested
I agree with that for most but not all of them, I have a 2x SB335's that sounds great and also have a great tone and plenty under the bonnet together with active and passive options. This thread has got me thinking though. I was thinking of selling the other but maybe I should try some different electrics in the one and keep them..I'll start my own thread. Here's a vid in which a bass player with a band called Muse is playing a SB334...check out Plug-in Baby about 30 mins in...I love that track https://www.youtube....zQgV1Yek&t=460s
  9.
I have experiences with high-end Prestige SR basses (SR3006, 5006, 1005). They have superb playability even for six stringers and sound great. The 5005/6 models are the current ones and go around a grand even used, but if you look around for the earlier 3005/6s (the ones with natural mahogany body) they go lower than a grand. These are Japaneese. There was a time when Prestige series moved to Korea, I owned a SR1005, they go around 500GBP and fantastic instruments for the price with a great neck and Bartolini pickups + through necks. I'm hearing good things about the Premium line too. Playability was never an issue with the SR models, the body, neck dimensions and ergonomics are pretty much the same throughout the range so they all play great.
I agree with all that Paul says. The SR basses with numbers above SR500 are very playable and great value for money. The premiums are now up to, or close to the standard of the prestige basses IMHO. The new BTB's are very versitile. Of course you are better to try before you buy
  10.
Also interested to know where you are based!

Where you based?thanks
Milton Keynes, UK
  11. I'm amazed this is still here. They have such a good reputation and this is a great colour. GLWTS!
  12.
I hope to watch soon some of your videos with the BTB!
Some recordings soon maybe, any videos will be with my band sometime in the future

    Ibanez BTB 1806

There are some links to videos with sounds of it's stable mate on this thread....http://basschat.co.uk/topic/309751-nbd-ibanez-btb-1805-content/page__p__3350303__hl__btb__fromsearch__1#entry3350303
  14. Very nice playing and a great sound, shows off your talent Note: I love the Aguilar pups and Ibby pre-amp in my BTB1805. I also love the ergonomics too as it is very comfortable and easy to play. I notice that you position it in the same way that I do when sitting and on the strap the neck sits up high easily, which helps my dodgy joints.
  15. A did you buy this from PMT? bump, I tried one there and it was a superb instrument
  16.
Sound wise they are closer than you would think. Difference is that there is a much bigger difference in tone between the pickups on the 5005 than there is on the 1605. The 1605 changes from a bit more trebly and attack at the bridge and warmer on the neck, the 5005 goes from harsh and agressive on the bridge to huge and thunderous on the neck (but also twice the volume). The 5005 is a lot heavier than the 1605 which changes the way it plays and balance - the 1605 has a tendancy towards neck heavy as the spalted wood is so light, which is why I put the ultralight tuners on it. The 5005 has the same tuners (grovers) but they suit it better as the wenge weights a lot more. I think on balance that the 5005 is nicer to play as an instrument, as the neck seems a little better, but the 1605 has much better electrics and the lightness is pretty good as our gigs tend to be long. The 5005 has the 3v electrics that are just odd, but mostly the imbalance between the pickups make it hard to go between the two
Thats interesting, I loved the sound of the SR3005e but I struggled to dial in sounds live. As a result I would leave the controls well alone during sets. Almost everything you said about the SR5005e reminds me of it. It is a great instrument with a Thunderous sound. The Ibby basses I have now are more like the 1605 and can be switched between mids settiings or pups without much change in volume so are much easier to live with. I would still like anohter Prestige SR sometime
  17.
Go on you know it makes sense !
Nope I play 5's
  18.
I took the SR5005 out for a gig yesterday, and the 1605 out for a gig today, and revelled in the way that both of them sounded, probably more noticable today as yesterday we were on the back of a truck and it was a bit harder to hear.
Comaprison?
  19.
Back to SR's - I put flats on the 700 before and it sounded horrible ! Took them straight off.
I had EB heavy flats on my SR3005e and it was massive but then that's a different beast.
  20. £499 BIN for a SR with big singles? sounds like a score! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ibanez-SR4XXV-Premium-Limited-Edition-4-string-Active-Bass-Quick-Release-Strap-/172828364600?hash=item283d5f8f38:g:PisAAOSw9ENZmVNV
  21. I enjoy it for what it is...he's just expressing himself appropriately for the style of music in a live performance. I think the tone is great but I wouldn't buy an album of the stuff. Note: I'll be bridging the gap between guitar and bass myself a bit in the next week as I'm getting a used Fender Pawn Shop Bass VI this week. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet but love bartione sounds.. It won't sound like that though
  22. Last bump for a while
  23.
I got my ATK305 in a trade, and I don't like the colour (so the idea was always to strip it down and repaint it), but the sound and playability is great. I love the look of the BTBs, but sadly they are way too big for me, get lost between the strings.
I haven't tried many Ibby basses outside the SR series but you seem to get what you get what you pay for. The SR Prestiges instruments have been hitting the right spot for years but the Premiums are now of a similar quality. I tried an ATK 200 way back and wasn't that impressed. That particular one seemed heavy, clumbersome and underpowered compared to the SR's. The ATK 8005 I have now is a different beast. It is lighter, with a fatter more rounded, more payable neck profile and pronounced growl....the band really love it. The same story with a BTB as a few years back. Way back I tried a 400 and found it a bit OK but unrefined and uninspiring...I would never have looked at another but I really like a local Bristol band called the Funkinsteins. Baz the bass player, plays a higher end BTB to good effect, As a result I tried an 1805 and then simply had to have it. The higher end Ibbys are a step up and have developed into superb instruments. All good news for buyers I think.
