Hands up as I can't do this. Trying to sing and play bass is already stretching my ability without messing with patch selection etc.. When playing in my band I just concentrate on the bass and have individual stomp box type pedals and manage that fine. Our guitarist on the other hand uses a whole lot of pedals including one programmable one and also vocals pedals. He ends up tap dancing on occasions such is his dedication to getting the sounds that he wants. It clearly is possible but needs a lot of dedication and practice to get it right. Hats off to those who can do it.

Listening to blur it sounds like you need something with a radical distortion and mixing options. I had a B'assmaster (not sure of the model) until fairly recently and liked it a lot. I found it "fuzzier" but a really strong sounding pedal. I moved it on mainly because of its size and to make some space. I'm pretty happy with the Mantic Vitriol that replaced it. I like the sound at the start of this vid in particular but notice the position of the distortion nob: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4L3PwjvkZs I also have a Dark Duality on the way which sounds like it is capable of getting similar results. I'll let you know when I receive it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rw5lOr6hsvg

Video - The Lindisfarne Story Band (wateroftyne)
Pinball replied to wateroftyne's topic in Live photos & videos
Nice! Lindisfarnes's Fog on the Tyne was the first album I ever bought. I still have it-Ray Jackson lived a few doors down and and my cousin to sign it for me. The quality of those songs and the production still shines today...great stuff I got to know the original bass player Rod Clements a bit as he ran a folk night and went to a couple of his NY parties. Is he still playing and if so whats he up too? -
I would say to start with go 2nd hand and get a bass with a similar feel to your 4 stringers. There are loads to choose from. For £1000 you can get yourself a really nice MM or G&L which are my favorites or anything really.
I'll see if i can get over the bridge that day to support. Just got to check the date. Happy to lift share with anyone else from Bristol if you fancy it. Cheers Steve
I'd be interested in a lift share Steve

Your ray will do it...stick some flats on it or why not try a fretless?
-
I agree a nice sound, You can hear it's MM heritage...also sounds like a G&L 1500
zappa stuff is all over the place i would start with hot rats, joes garage, zoot allures, apostrophie, overnight sensation.
That sounds about right to me. I seem to remember that he'd already done about 40 albums before zoot alures came out. I saw him around 79-80 in Newcastle. Class act and a great band. Wicked sense of humour too. Check out the hippy piss-take "we're only in it for the money" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-9FX7bhESs

G&L JB-2 Tribute 3-tone sunburst - immaculate **SOLD!!**

SR's do everything I want. There is loads of sound variation just by moving your right hand around the pup, plus the EQ, toggle and string choice. Then you have the amp and pedals to play with if you want too. I've had lots of basses and Stingrays are my favourites as I have never been disappointed in the results when playing live-not so with some of the others. Note: I have a fretless Stingray too which also sounds superb.

I just bought a Trem pedal from James. A very quick and easy deal-recommended seller

Thanks guys, a pleasure to deal with you all. Trem is great!
It won't do anything bad to your amp, but it doesn't sound particularly great.
Well I broke my tweeters in my GB NX2 cab when I put an acoustic guitar though it and it fed back!
Glad you're liking the G&L Ed! I did suffer a pang of seller's regret but I have just made an offer on a rather lush P so that feeling soon went.
I hope that you get what you want. I have wide (but now dodgy) shoulders and balance wise Stingrays and ESP Surveyors work best for me, Fenders J's and P's are OK and Spector's and Warwick's don't sit well. The latter feel at best awkward and heavier than they actually are.
Most surprising is the G&L - this feels like much harder work when I play it, even though the action is fine, and I would have put it at 10-11lb. In fact it is only 130g/4½oz heavier than the Sandberg and Precision. I think the key factor is the width of the neck, both when initially picking it up to play, and whilst actually playing. I use the same Comfort Strapp for all these basses, yet I have an achier shoulder when I have played the G&L. I guess I am tensing up my left arm muscles more when I play it. Anyone else been surprised when weighing their bass?
Interesting one, as the new owner of your G&L I have a theory. The neck is quite beefy (not as much as a Warwick FNA that I had) and with such basses it's a case of getting used to them. In addition you have very "beefy" flat stings on it. I have had EB flats before and think they sound great but they are "heavy" on the fingers and hands. The balance is great (better than my Warwick was) but it isn't a guitar to leap around the stage with as the pup picks lots of the sound from your fingers so good concentration is needed to get the best from it. Note: I'm in love with the sound coming while it sitting around playing it at home but haven't played it on stage yet
It's all about the balance point.
Definitely...I had a Bongo recently that I though was one of the lightest basses that I had owned until it came to weighing it for the new owner. I was astounded to find that it was over 10lb. This was because it was well balanced and comfortable.

I love my EB stingrays so won't look past them. I like the look of the contoured better anyway
