1. I agree a nice sound, You can hear it's MM heritage...also sounds like a G&L 1500
2.
zappa stuff is all over the place i would start with hot rats, joes garage, zoot allures, apostrophie, overnight sensation.
That sounds about right to me. I seem to remember that he'd already done about 40 albums before zoot alures came out. I saw him around 79-80 in Newcastle. Class act and a great band. Wicked sense of humour too. Check out the hippy piss-take "we're only in it for the money" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-9FX7bhESs
3. If your after an SR I would say wait and watch out for a 2nd hand SR500 Both are great value
4. I would love this...I already have 5 basses and a great playing Tribute L2000 so I can"t justify another. The build quality looks great in the pics GLWTS
5. SR's do everything I want. There is loads of sound variation just by moving your right hand around the pup, plus the EQ, toggle and string choice. Then you have the amp and pedals to play with if you want too. I've had lots of basses and Stingrays are my favourites as I have never been disappointed in the results when playing live-not so with some of the others. Note: I have a fretless Stingray too which also sounds superb.
6. I just bought a Trem pedal from James. A very quick and easy deal-recommended seller
7. Thanks guys, a pleasure to deal with you all. Trem is great!
8.
It won't do anything bad to your amp, but it doesn't sound particularly great.
Well I broke my tweeters in my GB NX2 cab when I put an acoustic guitar though it and it fed back!
9.
Glad you're liking the G&L Ed! I did suffer a pang of seller's regret but I have just made an offer on a rather lush P so that feeling soon went.
I hope that you get what you want. I have wide (but now dodgy) shoulders and balance wise Stingrays and ESP Surveyors work best for me, Fenders J's and P's are OK and Spector's and Warwick's don't sit well. The latter feel at best awkward and heavier than they actually are.
10.
Most surprising is the G&L - this feels like much harder work when I play it, even though the action is fine, and I would have put it at 10-11lb. In fact it is only 130g/4½oz heavier than the Sandberg and Precision. I think the key factor is the width of the neck, both when initially picking it up to play, and whilst actually playing. I use the same Comfort Strapp for all these basses, yet I have an achier shoulder when I have played the G&L. I guess I am tensing up my left arm muscles more when I play it. Anyone else been surprised when weighing their bass?
Interesting one, as the new owner of your G&L I have a theory. The neck is quite beefy (not as much as a Warwick FNA that I had) and with such basses it's a case of getting used to them. In addition you have very "beefy" flat stings on it. I have had EB flats before and think they sound great but they are "heavy" on the fingers and hands. The balance is great (better than my Warwick was) but it isn't a guitar to leap around the stage with as the pup picks lots of the sound from your fingers so good concentration is needed to get the best from it. Note: I'm in love with the sound coming while it sitting around playing it at home but haven't played it on stage yet
It's all about the balance point.
Definitely...I had a Bongo recently that I though was one of the lightest basses that I had owned until it came to weighing it for the new owner. I was astounded to find that it was over 10lb. This was because it was well balanced and comfortable.
11. Just completed a pedal trade/cash deal. An easy and quick deal Thanks bud
12. I love my EB stingrays so won't look past them. I like the look of the contoured better anyway
13. Just bought a very nice bass from G A pleasant deal-Thanks Ed
14. Nice G&L, I wish I had more space and dosh. GLWTS
15. Two pedals that I have not used for a while: Digitech Hardwire SC-2 Valve Distortion. I bought it used and used it with guitar (It looks used but nothing horrible). It's a nice sounding distortion with a lot of options Demo here: https://www.youtube....h?v=0pYHTmlxlsQ Ibanez SOLD! add on £5 for postage unless you can collect. .
16. I picked this up from Basschat earlier this year. I could use a spare voodoo labs power supply, Hercules twin bass stand. Maybe an octave pedal-Cog, Aquilar or MXR deluxe
17.
Bit of a resurrection of this post with an update. This is now definitely my number 1 bass. I just love it. Interestingly, as the strings on it die off it sounds better and better. I've had a set of Elixirs waiting to go on this since October and they're still sat in their packet. I played this at Mr Wolf's in Bristol a few weeks ago through my MarkBass CMD 121P and the bass player for the next band complimented me on the sound of it
Paul and I play together regularly and his P bass definitely hits the spot. When practising I prefer the sound of his P bass as it just sounds right and fits with the 12 and 6 stringers and with my voice. Just like a good recording mix
18. I love Schecter stuff but haven't played one of these yet, nice bass
19.
My question is, if I stick to same string gauge will I have to get the bass setup at all.
Basses all vary so the only way is to do it and then tweak the set up if you need too
20.
Although my current band is basically a rock band we do have prog/prog metal (ish) leanings - and it's starting to show in some of our newer original material.
Same here but the big problem is that I can't find many places to play it. It seems to me that most "prog" festivals, radio stations and other outlets are interested in retro rather than new music. Check them out and you will find lots of 70's bands playing. Some of the sub-genre's that I would have called prog back the day are those that are now at Festivals such as ArcTanGent. "ArcTanGent is the world’s ultimate music festival for connoisseurs of Math-rock, Post-rock, Noise-rock, Alt-rock and everything in between." The band that I play in (The Angry Badgers/See link below) is a cross genre/prog band and we get played by rock and metal stations I think prog is currently a dead or retro band term.
21.
I have the older 5 string Legend with bolted neck. They are excellent guitars although I am thinking of selling mine soon as I just don't use it.
I like those a lot. I prefer them to the neck-thru as the bolt-ons I played were lighter and sounded just as good.
