1. As an update I recorded the vocals and guitar int he studio acoustically and then added the bass at home. Finger style fretless sounds best to me. I tried 3 different basses from a Stingray to a P bass and they all sounded good. I'm probably going to go with the P bass. Note: I wish I had recorded the bass first...you live and learn I'll stick up a link to something once finished

3. Great pictures. I have the six string equivalent up for sale at the moment so know how good Crafters are. Have a bump!
4. Thanks, I did borrow one that had a Bart pre-amp and it was gorgeous. Maybe that is the answer
I had an MIJ SB320 that I put a Kiogon loom into. Just a simple Volume, Volume, Tone, Tone set up. Transformed the instrument into an even better bit of kit. Would recommend something along those lines.
or this
5. Where do I start? Well the bass is fretless and can be seen here: http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1 It's a bit of an unknown but it is active and the serial number indicated its a 1991 bass. maybe a 320 or 461. I love playing it but am not so keen on the bridge pickup. It complements the neck pup but is very quiet and thin. The neck pup is much better but could be better defined. My current thinking is either: 1. change the pre-amp and bridge pup or 2, Ditch the preamp and go passive, probably with Entwistle pups or I could just forget it and just enjoy playing it-especially as I'm broke-at least until I sell something else. Any advice?
6. Well I'm still playing them all the time and have tried recording with the Fretless. It plays superbly but doesn't sound as good as my fretless P bass recorded. An upgrade is due I think so I'm about to set up a thread seeking advice....ooh also I'd be interested in a trade for a 5 for the 310 as that will be of more use to me-either that or I'll try and sell it to fund the upgrade. Note: I've worn my fingers out over the weekend playing that fretless
7. Does it have to be knew? Is 2nd hand "as new" any good. It just strikes me that nice USA MM's and Fender PJ's are within your budget Other PJ suggestions would be a yamaha 1024 or 1024x or the new Mexican Fenders seem worth a look
8. My favourite bass sound A 5 stringer such as a 1025x, Rebop, or electro-acoustic guitar-Takamine Japan or Breedlove USA . Try me Here we have my prized USA Ernie Ball Stingray 5 (SR5). This is an awesome bass and sounds like only a Stingray can. I have owned and used this for a while but haven't been using it much recently so its time for someone else to play it. It really is an awesome beast and I will hate to see it go. The colour is great as it isn't too bright but it shows up well under the lights. It has been lightly gigged but is in great condition. 10. Price 600 or near offer. Trades: A 5 stringer such as a 1025x, Rebop or Takamine Japan or Breedlove USA electro-acoustic This SR3005e was my No1 base for a good while until I switched to a Stingray last year. It is a real looker, great to play and a tone monster, Bartolini customs with 3 band EQ and sweep-able mids. It has been gigged but is well cared for. I believe it was made in the early 2000's and is from the very top of the Ibanez range. The current version is the 5005e. It's nice and light. The neck feels a little more substantial than the modern SR's but is still as fast and smooth to play It comes in a its fitted case. The reason for selling is to generate some cash so if other things sell I may remove this from the site. If you want more pictures or to give it a try ping me your email address. 11. Welcome to the SR5 fretless club, they are great basses. I love mine (natural) and they sound good with any type of music IMHO. Yours is a thing of beauty congratulations.
12.
Played several Bass collections... A friend of mine had a very unique model as well...
Wowzer,, it looks slippery. Is that the original neck? It looks most un BC like with the butterfly tuners etc.
13.
I gigged one last year, now admittedly not in a hard rock band but I was impressed with the oomph factor. I plugged in to an MXR M80 pedal and then in to my Shuttle 6. Honestly it was awesomely loud and very comfortable for a three set gig. Why did I sell it
I'd gig with them just not in our current band...I like the sound and the front pickup in particular has a bit of beef
14.
I sold mine because it was so light. I was playing a Thumb at the time (followed on from a Hayman 40/40, then a P) and such a lightweight bass just felt wrong to me. I rather regret it now, it was a lovely bass.
I can understand that They are very light. I just weighed them with my crappy scales and the 310 is around 7ib 8oz, the fretless is about 8ib 8 oz. I thought the fretless was the lightest but was wrong. Maybe a different wood?
15. Hi, I say annoying because I have a couple next to me in my guitar rack and tend to pick them up in preference to my other basses because they are so tactile and nice to play. Two of the most tactile basses I have ever had in my hands and nice and light. I was blissfully unaware of these Japanese gems when they were being made. I'am now considering selling some of my more expensive and hard saved for items in favour of keeping the blighters, I'm unlikely to use them for gigs as they don't have enough guts for hard rock that my higher end stuff has. Anyway I normally need 5 strings. What to do? Keep them I guess and consider myself a lucky man Here's a couple of pictures but pictures. Both are in great condition but you need to play them to appreciate them fully. The 310 had been in its case for 20 years until I bought it and the action was awful but a bit of oily love and a tweak on the truss rod and I have a superb playing bass-plays like butter with flats on. It has beutiful wood grain too but you can't see it in the pics. Not sure which model this is but it has a Gotoh bridge and tuners and a wax/oil finish. It's active so maybe a 320?? Fretless ebony board. This one also needed a set up. The truss rod had been slackened right off for some weird reason. Again it plays great although I'm looking forward to changing the strings for some of my favourite flats. 16. A bit of lead and some BV. Apparently I have a distinctive voice so the band like be to sing certain numbers that suit it. Here's an demo where you can here our LV singing and me doing err the other stuff https://soundcloud.c...s/intransigence
17. I'm going the solid body fretless route....I'm pleased with things so far
18. Wow I never noticed this had been going down in price...its looking like a classic bargain
19. Hi, dreaming of making a combo bass. A quality fretless-maybe graphite neck so I want a donar bass..Maybe a fender precision or jazz or a MIJ bass e.g. Greco, Ibanez Do most of the fenders have the same neck pocket size? What about Ibanez blazers etc. ?
20. I love it, If I wasn't looking for something else maybe
21. Thanks all you have helped my clarity of thinking
22. Thanks, I can do fretless. Also this bit nails what I'm trying to achieve
With flatwound strings I can get a nice little percussive edge that works very nicely without a drummer.
Cheers!
