Hi, I normally play Stingrays or an Ibanez SR3005E but am now working on an acoustic song based guitar/vocals project and would like an alternative bass sound. I have a modest budget and or could trade or sell my Ibby I normally play 5 strings, 34" scale in rock bands and loads of pedals Whatever I listen to sounds good e.g. P basses, Jazzes, EMG's, That should make it simple but just makes it more confusing HELP! Any suggestions or am I just overthinking this? It sounds like a "which guitar is good for metal post"

Senario: A new originals band has been playing for about 1 yr and is on Facebook, ReverbNation and Soundcloud. We're getting better gigs and have better recordings but aren't making money. We really would like to set up our own web site. Low cost would be good. 1. Any suggestions 2. Any advice on selling on a web site Note: We did try one of free ones but found it a bit constricted and soon came up against barriers that needed cash input-not quite as free or as fit for purpose as it first appeared. Any advice, with examples would be much appreciated! Ed

SR500 or upwards and you can't go wrong, I have a real soft spot for "woody" Japanese SR's from SR1000 upwards. The ones that I have tried are gorgeous and sound great and worth searching out.

Yes the tone comes from your fingers but its also the bass.... and the amp, the cabs, the strings, the shape of the of the room, not to mention the tone/EQ nobs!

I always recall me and Mornatts trying each others (totally different) basses. I noticed him smiling when I was playing and asked what was up-his answer was "When you play my bass it sounds like and and when I play yours it sounds like me. A great bass sound it down to both equipment and style A good analogy would be taking a photograph. A good quality image depends on a decent camera gear but getting a great picture is down to the photographer.

Eeek, the monster I created returns This was great and did what it was intended to do and gave us a step up in terms of credibility. Maybe not such a good deal as for over a grand I would expect all 4 strings-lets face it trying to find original missing string is going to be tough

[/quote] Naah its easy, just treat the bottom string as a thumb rest and then stick with it and let your playing evolve. As someone fairly new to bass. I started on 5 strings and wasn't happy with the results. I like to slide my hands around and found myself playing across rather than along and I didn't make full use of the neck. As a result I went back to 4's and sorted out my technique and then moved up to 5's permanently. I do find it unnatural to switch between 4's and 5's now so play only 5's, including a fretless. Note: I don't claim to be an expert but thats my experience.

I had an SR5 and a SterlingRay35 at the same time and loved the sound of both but I always preferred playing the USA version. It spent ages pondering why as I liked the 35's sound and eventually put it down to differences in the feel of the neck. I recently found a USA SR5 neck and had it fitted to the Ray35 and it has transformed the bass IMHO, its hard to explain but the USA ones just feel more rock solid and more percussive in comparison. We often practice without either drums or keys as its really hard to get our whole band together. If we're missing our drummer we use software drum tracks that we have made when we're developing the tracks-many are based on the rhythms of our drummer. It's very useful as we have had to play without a drummer twice in the last 12 months. When playing live the whole band need to be able to hear the Software drums to avoid disaster so it can be tricky. If you listen to The Angry Badgers Soundcloud link below all the demo's are software drums that we use and "Kill It" is the whole band. I much prefer real drums but we still manage to rock the house

There are a whole lot of them just to confuse you. The USA subs as already mentioned The Sterling by Musicman's e.g. Ray34 and Ray35, which are near their American relatives in terms of sound and build quality Sub by Sterling Ray4 and Ray5, which are capable but cheaper and not so well specked as the other. No comparison IMHO I have had a Ray35 and liked it a lot. I still have the body with USA neck on it

I would be keeping my favourites and plugging the gaps. I'm happy with my Xotic Pre, Weeping Demon Wah, EBS multicomp, Strymon BlueSky. I'm really looking for an echo/delay so a Strymon Timeline
