Unfortunately there is no right answer. I've found that what sounds good on one bass won't necessarily sound good on another. In the end it's just a question of trial and error until you find a B-string that suits the bass AND your playing style. And after all that it maybe that the bass simply isn't built well enough to get a decent sounding and feeling low B. Too many manufacturers, especially at the cheaper end of the market, think it's enough to simply put a wider neck, pickups with five sets of pole pieces and the appropriate bridge and number of tuners on one of their 4-string models and call it a five-string. It's not. It is in fact all about neck and neck joint construction and IME I've yet to play a sub-£1000 bass with a bolt-on neck that has a decent sounding and feeling low B, no matter what strings I put on it.
Wise advice-trial and error. I used to avoid bolt on construction and stuck to a 35" scale for a while-I even had a Carvin that was 37". Then I got a Spector Legend 4 strung BEAD that had a great B string, which forced me to think again. Since then I have stuck to 34's with both 4 and 5 strings, most of which have been sub £1000. Fernandes, Ibanez, ESP's, Yamaha and Cort make good 34" scale basses. I have also played some horrible ones though. The worst was a USA Fender
Oh, go on go on go on go on go on go on go on Furthering my campaign with the guitarses to do this ▶ The Sensational Alex Harvey Band ~ Delilah - YouTube
I was at a SAHB (without Alex) gig in the early 90's in Glasgow where they raffled that lime green costume for charity. Zal didn't think he could fit in it anymore I think they are still playing aren't they? Anyway the title track from there best Album in my humble opinion.
Well I picked it up today ..it's truly amazing...cannot now justify what I've spent in the past on guitars I won't mention names..But well worth the few hundred pound it cost me...
Congratulations!

It's a real shame that there is so little video of SAHB. Alex Harvey's song writing was fantastic (sometimes almost unhinged, checkout Shake that thing) and there stage presence was amazing and he told a really good story. What about this for a band with attitude lol Or this, I'm not sure the hippies knew what to make of it. It looks like EB's. Well I like them although i have already ordered some Status flats to try out. If I don't like them as much I know where to go. Thanks for the advice. Note: I was told in a local shop that EB's and Rotosounds are basically the same strings sold under different brands. Is that true?

A good move, I played a couple and they were great. What really impressed me is the quality of the sound and all of the variations you get from it are usable. I also liked the fact that when you switched from passive to active you retained exactly the same sound and character but gain some power and thump. A great choice.

Yep red silk, I just noticed they are in my pic

Thanks

I have some flats that I got with a bass and have no idea what they are. Bright red tape at both ends and brass rings t the bridge. Any suggestions?

An example of the differences of round wound V flats here but there are also big differences between the different round wound. Apologies if all this seems obvious-I know the difference playing style and strings make but I never really had the chance to play them back to back before. Anyway an example here. I have a very transparent kit at the moment. A GB Steamer amp, GB 212 cab and 3 (don't ask) identical LTD/ESP surveyors loaded with EMG's. That has given me the chance to compare different strings. I have a set of flats on one, heavy status round-wounds on another and rotosound medium round-wounds on the 3rd and can't believe the difference between them. Its like having 3 different kits. Next time I go to change basses someone stop me and tell me to try changing strings instead!. I'm not sure which will work best in a band context yet but prefer the sound of the flats playing solo. This is going to keep me amused all over the Christmas holidays

Thanks for the feedback Since posting this I took the flats (unknown brand) off my Sandburg 4 and tried them on my ESP 405 and they sound great. A very sweet sound without any loss of depth. I'm now thinking that I need to try all my kit with the band before making any hard and fast decisions. Note: New amp, cab and strings, what was working before no longer sounds right-too many variables at once. Its doing my head in!

Hi, I love playing flats and halfrounds and also the tone of active EMG's so I was thinking that this combo may work quite well for me .I wondered if anyone out there uses flats with EMG's and if they are pleased with the results?. I hoping for more pure EMG tone with reduced finger/fret noise. At the moment I'm using Status round wound strings, except a set of EB flats on my Sandburg

Thanks to Geof for a good deal on a GB cab and a coffee on collection. Have a good Christmas and NY!

Nice one, from my experience Burns guitars are really well put together (Englist/Korean and now Chinese) and really true to their roots. I gig a 12 string lead regularly (see link) and also have a 6 string cobra. I'd really like a Bison or shadows bass but can't justify it at the moment. !2 stringer here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10200939336220564&set=o.437397106353288&type=1&theater
Nailsea is nearly in Scotland! You have to remember, it's all cross-country down here in ciderland.
Hmm maybe we should have a cider meeting instead? Seriously I'd rather attend than arrange so whatever
-
Well there's a local pub in Nailsea (just off the M5) where they don't mind us making a racket. They do the usual Sunday meals/bar stuff but have a nice long room at the back with good access from the car park. If there is reasonable interest I'll make some inquiries. If you bring your Sandburg that would be cool as I always wanted to see a KT.
-
Well if you want a meeting organised just south of Bristol let me know. I know of a pub I think would be pleased to have us. Any interest?
