1. Also
Im in just the same boat with the strings. Mine is a home made 35 1/4" through body. The only 5 strings that will fit this baby that are not round wounds are TI flats at over £70 a pop I may have not strung the Status B correctly (Not enough brake) so that may have been it. BTW Newtone may be in the market to make custom length Flats in the new year so theres hope for us silly long scale guys yet
I got an email from Bassgear a while back to say they will be stocking Carins own strings, so they may be worth a look. Not to expensive either.
2.
Ive just tried just these two sets of strings on my 35" fretless jazz V also with a piezo and Im undecided at the mo. The status were a nicer string but the B was awefull. The dadario's have a higher tension which I prefer and a decent B. The roughness soon wears off so its not realy an issue I dont think. I may swap back to the status to compare again. Nice mole track btw
Interesting, the Status B seems good on mine-infact they sound good and consistent across the set. Maybe there is a slight difference in guitars as the Carvin is an XB 35.5 scale, which is partly why I was struggling to find strings in the first place. Unfortunately I haven't got the Dadario's to try. I'm happy with the status anyway as I like the sound. You just can't generalise with Bass guitars can you. Thanks for the complement, using the slug pellets for a shaker was pure inspiration
3. Well here's what the Status Hotwires/half rounds sound like now that they are played in Carvin bass, straight into the computer with no tweaks, bass high, treble high and mids left neutral. I'm happy with these so thanks for the advice. Note: Excuse the voice and technique, I'm not a pro. http://soundcloud.com/mole-music-1/supersonic
4.
It's to do with the break angle. If there's a sharper angle at the nut, and/or the bridge, the strings will have less compliance... Basically they will feel tighter, more secure, without an increase in actual tension
Aah that would help explain it. There has to be some sort of technical reason. Assuming that the necks are rock solid I can't think of anything else it could be. The Fender angle was very tight at the bridge in comparison to the guitars I next to me at home. If you are buying without trying it is a really important point. I would be gutted if I ordered a new bass and it didn't play like I expected.

Hi! :)

Nice stiff, like the rythum/harmonics at the end a lot especially.
6.
Make of string will cater a lot to this. I've broken one of my basses playability once trying different strings. Never again. Scale length by science says longer is better, but the best Low-B I ever had was on an Ibanez RD405, which I sadly no longer own. That was a 34" scale. That being said, Fender still use the old tried and tested designs, but if I may be so bold I think they make better 4-string than 5-string basses. That;s just IMHO, however. I don't like the B-string on my Jazz V.
Thanks for the replies. I have been trying out a whole load of basses and in 4's the USA Fenders are still the ones that set the bar in my opinion (I want one or a Sandberg maybe). That is why I was gobsmacked by my playing experience of the 5. Maybe it was just that one guitar but I just couldn't get my head around it.
7. I have some 5 stringers with B strings and a 4 stringer with BEAD tuning all of which play great but I keep reading on Basschat about sloppy B strings. Then today I played a new Fender with...you guessed it, a sloppy B string?? How can this be??? If the scales and tension are the same what makes them sloppy?? Is it the make of strings that are used? I can't think of anything else. I'd appreciate it if someone would explain. If this is a dumb question please excuse me but I can't get my head around it!
8. Thanks for the comments, I have used it on some of my soundcloud recordings (note: messing around and not a pro). Emotional Greens on my soundcloud account is one (link below). It is a very adaptable bass for any type of music and nice and low sounds for Jazz or reggae/dub.
9. A cracking bass for £250 cash will trade/PX for compact cab/s 300w+. Please note this is BEAD tuned and has a great B string. If you want to get low down and dirty this is the machine to do it with. One of the best playing basses I have played and in great condition. The split coil option on this dates it between 2004-2006. I got it in a trade for a lead guitar and I'm selling because I have too many basses.
10. Hi, I have this beauty sitting around in its case. Criminal as it sounds too nice for that. In very nice condition other than a couple of strange watermarks on the back of the head. It had a new set of strings about a month ago so is fit for action. Any trial welcome. 11. A really nice sounding and playing bass, which I'm told was made in the same factory that makes European Spectors. Not be confused with modern Dean Edges. I like this a lot but it never comes out of its case so its time to go. £275 + collection gets it! Thread here:http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1
12. Tasty indeed, have another bump. Swap you for a pinball machine maybe? Everyone should own at least one of those.
13. Hi, a little feedback on a couple of tracks please. Especially "Bass hands". At the time of recording I thought the electronic drums were the biz. It's to give a trance/dance edge-unlike Caught in Glass, which was a more traditional swing thing. I am now wondering if I should have gone for a more traditional drum sound on BH. All feedback welcome. These are the first tracks that feature my Carvin BTW. http://soundcloud.com/mole-music-1
14. Well, I never say I will keep anything long term but at the moment I can't see any reason why I would part with this. It sounds as good as it looks.
15. I think it makes more of a difference on lead guitars. I love my through body Schecters as the strings sing for ever (sustain). Set neck/thru body stinging and materials all make a small difference that adds up. I can't tell any difference with bass. Why would I want ot sustain for ever in any case?
16.
I'd love it. But would I be better getting back into playing with a four string first?
Only you can decide . Many 5's have very thin necks, the difference being in the width of the fret board and if its tuned for low B the top 4 strings are the same. I must admit that my most comfortable bass is a 4 stringer but migrating to 5's isn't that hard. The first question I would be asking is do I need 5 strings, if not stick to 4.
17. Thanks M8 I will. I'll maybe put them up with individual sets of pics to show them off at some point.
18. I love it as a usable bit of art. I appreciate the attention to detail. 10/10 A bit impractical and difficult to use though, I would prefer a less extreme relic maybe.
