I have these fitted on all my basses, been using them for a few years now and love them. Primarily I play with my fingers and quite hard too, as a result the coating wears quite quickly. These strings are my absolute favourite and recommend them to anyone, but if you're using a pick I'd advise against them.

Cheers for the suggestions guys. That should get me going quite nicely.

Afternoon all, Would you guys be able to recommend a few albums for me please. Having recently gotten back into upright playing I'd like a few things to listen to for inspiration. Whilst any album featuring upright playing would be appreciated, in particular I'm thinking latin, rockabilly, jazz and blues. Ideally, I'd rather actual album suggestions instead of "anything by..." We all have those albums that inspired us and helped shaped our playing. If I have a few albums to start with I can branch out later. Any suggestions are welcome as I'd like to listen to as much as possible and start expanding my knowledge and understanding of the instrument. Cheers, James

Sorry guys, got carried away playing it. Once it arrived I made another thread... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/270300-ndbd/page__pid__2875015#entry2875015

I've already been offered work?!?

From playing around this afternoon, the action doesn't feel too bad. A fraction lower would be nice, but it's pretty comfortable. Lower tension strings are a definite and other than that it's now a case of working on technique.

First thoughts, it's a lot nicer than I was expecting. String tension is a little too much for my liking so will invest in some lower tension ones. It's also a hell of a lot heavier than my last DB.

Morning all, Today's the day, it's been a long time coming but it's finally NDBD! Just waiting for it to turn up now and cannot wait. At the moment I'm eagerly awaiting the delivery of a Thomann 111E BR 3/4. Unfortunately there's not a lot more I can do until it arrives, after which pictures will naturally follow. Next week I'm going to stick a set of rotosounds on it, I've purposely decided to leave the stock strings on for a week so I can appreciate the difference and I'm also considering one of the J-tone pickups. Following advice on here I've been watching a load of videos on discoverdoublebass and have found them very helpful and I've also looked into finding a local tutor. The last time I owned a DB was a few years ago and never really got to use it (bar one gig), so I'm hoping to use this one a fair bit. Probably going to stick to mainly pizz and slap but occasionally I might try Arco (but doubt it). After having a think about what I'd like to do, I reckon I'll stick to some jazz playing, might see if any acoustic duos fancy being a trio and would love to give playing swing covers in clubs and restaurants a go, but more on that in the future. Anyway, I'm gonna go back to looking at pictures of everyone else's DB's whilst hoping it turns up soon... Cheers, James

My precision and stingray are both set up with 40-100 Rotosound Nexus, the necks are set dead straight with no relief at all, the strings are low as possible without them choking, but low enough they buzz if persuaded, with the pickups raised high enough that the string doesn't touch them (caught my fingers on the magnets once by playing too hard). Removed the strap pin on both and have two, each one about 3 inches either side of where the original one was for different height options too. On my precision I fitted a Hipshot "A" type bridge too, and I've adjusted the string spacing. They're not evenly spaced on it, just set at what feels right.

It's not often that one looks forward to a Monday, but today's the day! It's coming today. All I know is that it'll be here between 0900 and 1600, but it's coming today!!!

Last time I owned one I got on fine and was eager to dive straight in. This time round I want to really focus on technique and have been watching a few videos on discoverdoublebass. The main thing I've got to remember is not to collapse my thumb as I can see me struggling with that one. Can't wait and Monday can't come quick enough...just hope the sound post is fine.
What sort of music will you be playing by the way??
Mainly jazz, might try and get in with an acoustic group but would love to get into doing a few swing numbers in clubs and restaurants.
Congratulations, welcome to the family, and GET A TEACHER!
Don't panic, I've read enough advice threads and searched the MU for local ones

Just had the call, it arrives on Monday!?!

I always tape mine down. I decide where I'm going to be positioned and tape my effect to amp lead down with any excess tucked into my cab handle.

Post your pictures, Lets see what you all look like.

It's been a while, here's some from a gig I had in the summer... Ive got a status neck fitted on two of my basses, my precision and my sterling sub (John East pre and Delano pickup). On both basses they sound and feel great. Fantastic clarity and tons of mids and bright biting high end. If I could afford to, if have one on all my basses. Tuning rarely happens on mine, just plug in and play. I used my precision on a tour of Asia last year and even after flights it was still in tune. They're absolutely brilliant. Just had an email to say it's ready and being shipped. All I need to do is wait for a phone call to arrange delivery :-D
You'll love it. And you'll get a good service from Thomann, by all accounts. Have a ball;.
I genuinely cannot wait. Last time I owned an upright I loved it. I've heard good things about Thomann and so far they've emailed me constantly about what I'd like done. It just needs to arrive now and I'll be off.
I've had one of their cheaper models for 3 years...it's still going strong and I still love it.
Just the sort of stuff I wanted to hear

And for that I have auto-correct to thank

Morning all, A while back I had a gear4music DB, it was cheap but it served it's purpose and got me into playing an upright (much more so than a Dean Pace did years ago). Although many knock these entry level instruments, it met my needs and I was happy with it. Then due to circumstances I moved it on to a BCer and that was that. Yesterday, after months of seeing signs that I "need" to get back into upright playing, I ordered an upright. In fact, one that was discussed in a thread recently. It's one of the ones from Thomann, only their cheapest one as its all I can afford and can justify spending at the moment. They've offered to set it up for me, I'm going to stick a set of rotosounds on it when it arrives and once I'm used to playing one again, a pickup will be added. I cannot wait for its arrival and it cannot come quick enough. Cheers, James
