Really pleased with how all this has picked up again. Thank you all ever so much. James

OK, what I reckon, is that we leave it for one more week. If there is no further interest or no one steps forward, I'll declare the relay over. I'll save the kind words/speech until then 😛 Once again, thank you everyone for your continued support and efforts. Cheers James

Hi guys, I'm starting to feel that the bass relay has run it's course. Are any other BCers interested in taking a go before I consider pulling it? A big thank you to everyone's continued efforts throughout the relay, I really cannot thank you all enough for everything you've all done. Thanks, James

Does any other BC members up North want to join in with the relay? Anyone at all?

Still can't decide between Matte black, black pearl or white pearl. As for hardware I'm torn between chrome and black.

Evening all, Following on from my recent thread regarding a bass to take on my next tour... Today I went round to Nevada (where I get the wonderfully consistent, terrible customer service I usually get) and tried a couple of 5s. Firstly I tried an ESP LTD B Series in a lovely blue finish, but decided against it and moved on to try what I actually went in there for. For a while I've been eyeing up a Squier VM Precision V with a CAR finish. Tried it, loved the feel and weight of it and bought it. Over the next few weeks I'm going to start buying parts to mod it, ready for my next tour at the end of October. For now though, it's been given a (very) much needed set-up and polish. How some shops leave their instruments still continues to amaze me. My plans for it are as follows... Take out the existing pickup and replace it with a Seymour Duncan MM 'bucker and have another one at the bridge. Going for an Alnico model wired series at the neck and a Ceramic wired parallel/series at the bridge. The bridge will be swapped for a hipshot A type. Tuners will be swapped for hipshot ultralites. Schaller strap locks will be installed. I'm also going to have some of the wood routed out under the scratchplate to save on weight. Still can't make my mind up on S/P and hardware colours though. Glad to hear it Dave, I'll try to make one of your gigs before I fly back out. Anyone fancy joining in with the relay?

Cheers for all the responses guys, they've all been very helpful, well, not all, the Harley Benton suggestion has got me very curious. After a quick look I've noticed heave got a dirt cheap 7 string and I've been after a seven for ages. I'm tempted to get one anyway and see what it's like. Anyhow, I've spent most of last night and this evening looking at suggestions and I know the SR basses are great and get praise everywhere, but they really don't do it for me. The yammys on the other hand, I'm curious to try one. There's none in any shops around my way, but I like the look of them, especially the RBX5-A2. One thing I did find last night on here, was a John Myung Yammy deep in the sale section and I'm intrigued by that one. As for the Squier Bass 6, I like them, great fun to play, but I reckon I wouldn't enjoy it for the whole tour. I've narrowed it down to either the Squier VM P (with mods) or a Yamaha (if I can find one to try). Or, I take the plunge on a Harley Benton and see what they're like, I've never played, heard or even seen one, but I reckon I might be pleasantly surprised with either the 7 string one, or one of the 6 string Yammy copies. Any comments on the Harley Benton gear would be greatly appreciated, as would any more suggestions. Cheers.

Evening all, As you're aware I recently posted a bass regarding Candy Apple Red basses. The thought behind this was that I've found a precision I'm quite fond of and I'm considering getting it for the next leg of my tour. It's nothing fancy, it's a Squier VM Precision 5 and because of it's low price I'd do a bit of modding to it too. Then I got thinking and thought I'd see what else is available. Basically, I'm after some suggestions of what to try, consider and buy. The main criteria is weight, I'm going to be doing long sets 6 nights a week and want it to be as close (weight-wise) to my 4 string precision (which to date, is the lightest bass I've played). Now I know I won't get a 5 with the weight of a light 4, but you know what I mean. So, what I'm ideally after is: Very lightweight (basswood?), No short-scale, Passive preferred, Minimum 5 strings, but would prefer a 6+, Ideally Looking to spend no more than £500 (which would include any upgrades/mods), Preferably solid finish, Used isn't an issue. So far I've seen the squier vm precision, or a Cort Curbow 6 (if I can find one again) but looking for advice on things like ibanez, Yamaha, anything really, but weight is the biggest factor. As always, pics are always welcome with suggestions, Answers on a postcard.

Afternoon all, Had a walk around Nevada Music yesterday as I'm thinking of getting myself a 5 string for my next tour. Whilst in there I spotted a lovely CAR precision, which I'm thinking of getting. The plan is to get that, give it my normal treatment (Seymour Duncan 1/4 pounder P and a ceramic MM, hipshot ultralites and A type bridge), but there's one thing I can't decide. It comes with a parchment guard, but I can't decide on scratchplate and pickup cover colours, so I need your help. Can any owners of a CAR bass please post some pics as inspiration. At the moment I'm torn between pearl white, matte black and pearl black guard. Just after seeing what you guys have done. Many thanks, James

Whilst I was out there, we found music shops all over the place. In Shanghai there's street that is solely instrument shops, With pretty decent bass sections. Also in Manila there was a good selection. Whilst out there I went in to this one shop and the bass section was 2-3 times larger than the bass section, all decent prices where the owner didn't have a clue. Failing that, there's an exclusive bar in Manila and a guy called Jericho part owns it. Get in touch with him. We played the club and I had a chat with him, he's one of the biggest distributors over there and has a very nice collection of gear.

I've now got Prime_BASS's Status neck fitted on my P and love it, One of the best upgrades on my bass. Recently done a tour of Asia with it fitted and barely had to touch my tuning at all. Cannot fault the neck one bit and it plays, feels and sounds fantastic.

I've just returned from a tour in that area and will be heading back out in a few months. As for case and flights, I took a bass-safe. Mainly for the convenience of leaving the case at hotels and using a gigbag in-between. Not one flight would allow my bass as hand luggage. In the case this was understandable, but on the way home the airline told us one policy regarding checked instruments and went back on it at check in. Even in just a gig bag they refused it as hand luggage. The bass-safe, even with my doubts, did it's job. Problem with mine is that the latches don't stay closed, so I relied on duct-tape for the flights. SKB are looking into a solution for me though. As for pedal power, I found a travel adapter worked fine. No need for a transformer at all. A lot of the nicer venues out there have extension leads that will take any type of plug (including a uk one). Hope this helps

Hi guys, Sorry for being a bit quiet of late. First of all I want to say a big thank you to everyone that's helped keep the relay going and for making sure it has still continued to run smoothly in my absence. I'm back in the country for a few months before I need to head back out to Asia and will help again as much as possible while I'm back. Thank you all for your continued hard work and donations. James

Makes a change to hear a nice story on them. They're just round the corner from where I live.
I got a cable made up by obbm which is a standard instrument cable and a stereo headphone cable which run side by side. The headphone bit terminates on a 3.5mm socket to plug my in ears into. That way you can have a powered personal monitor unit sitting on top of your amp and not have to worry about batteries.
Just sent him a PM about the lead, what system are you using?
-
Afternoon all, Need a few suggestions from you lot. What I'm after is a personal monitor system. I don't want wireless, all I'm after is a small bodypack. So straight out of my bass, into said bodypack, then one output into headphones and the other going off to my amp. I've already got a set of Shure 315 and some moulded ear pieces fitted to them, I'm just missing the middle bit. After looking online, I really like the Samson S Monitor, but it has to be mains supplied and I'll need a battery powered system. Cheers, James

Had a listen to that when it went up on the fb page, great stuff guys
