Evening all, I recently found and answered an add online looking for a bass player... "I'm putting together a live band to back a talented local rapper with the view of having some fun and doing a few shows. I'm drumming and having a few people in mind for other roles but thought it might be nice to see who's out there first musician wise. So anyone think they can bring something to a live hip hop act? Or know someone who would? Get in touch!" I answered it and talked to the guy as I've always wanted to have a crack at hip hop. What made it even more appealing is that the guy is already established with a following. It's all been made out to be; rehearse, play gigs, help on recordings. All seems very straight forward and legit. Anyhow, I was unable to make the first rehearsal due to previous arrangements I already had. All went well, I got sent all the tracks they want me to learn and even a live recording from the rehearsal. Then I got an email the other day that's made me a tad doubtful... "I'm not one to f*ck about, I'm getting old, so I want to keep momentum and lay down what I think should happen next. I'm perfectly happy to push us at promoters to get gigs and do all the other sh*t a manager would generally do. To do this we have to have: - A demo/EP of at least 3 tracks. - Proper good photos. - Biog - A couple of smaller shows under our belt. This will cost money. In the region of £3-400 I would say. Now I'm not expecting everyone to stump up £65 on a new project immediately but who could find that money in the next two months? I really want this to happen so whatever happens I will pay it myself until people can afford it. " Now, if this guy already has mixed recordings "a couple of albums", then why would we need to record an EP in order to secure gigs. Surely I'm right in thinking that you send the actual artist's recording as we're just going to be arriving as his band? Am I being too cautious about this? I don't want to miss out on a cool project like this (the recordings are fantastic), but then again, I don't want to be taken for a right when money is already as tight as it is. What do you guys reckon?
I could collect it tomorrow from Johnny in Hemel. I travel about a bit and can arrange to drop it with anyone else who's doing a gig in the South, South-east, London, Anglia area. Any takers?
Give this a shout out on the Facebook page too
If you put your 500K pots between the pickups and the preamp, they will do just fine. You need 25K only if your volume control(s) is(are) situated after the preamp (between the preamp and the output jack). In your case (two volumes and passive tone control), you have to have these between the pickups and the preamp, therefore 500K is a good choice.
Cheers buddy, thank you
Well I played it at our church this morning and we raised a respectable £100! It would have been more but I hadn't realised that there would be another collection for some missionaries from our church too.
Well done and thank you, hope/glad you enjoyed your time with the bass. You lot are amazing and don't forget to add the relay to your sigs if you've taken part.

Ok, last Saturday I dropped it off at the shop and told it'll be ready by Friday. Got down there Friday evening...not ready yet, will have it done by close on Saturday. So I ring up yesterday, no luck "it'll be ready Monday" so, I'm hoping to have it by tomorrow.

Polishing a bass, or anything come to that
Jimryan replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
Or lighter fluid. I've yet to try it myself, but apparently it works. I'm currently using a bottle of guitar polish and a micro-fibre cloth and it works great. -
Morning all, My bass is being wired up today. I've supplied the guy with 2x 500k volume pots, DPDT mini switch (to switch between active/passive), a Seymour Duncan stacked 2-band pre and a 500k tone pot. He's just called saying these pots might not do and I'll have to buy new high quality ones. Apparently the 500s will do for passive, but for active I need 25k pots. What do you guys think? Cheers James
I love block inlays but IMO I think they will look rubbish on the bass I think it will make it too "busy" if you get what I mean as its a pretty in your face as it is, I think it looks great as it is now
Yeah, I get that, cheers.
lookin ace dude. The orange on the headstock is amazing
Cheers buddy, it helps break up the black.
If you are happy with me just adding ones more gig to it but without fundraising(they aren't happy) I'll take it for 10th. Am in camb but gig in Ely
It's all awareness for the cause matey. As long as you can highlight why (even without the fundraising), the band is always welcome to donate 😝

I also can't decide whether to get some of the block marker stickers. My precision used to have some and everyone thought they were real. What do you guys reckon?

Taking it to get wired up today 😄
-
Yep...£1506.59 to date. Well done everyone

Got to argue, I've had two VM's, a fretless jazz and a precision. Both have been amazing. The fretless went because it didn't get used and the precision is not going anywhere. I also have the jazz deluxe mentioned and it's equally as good. Can't knock the VM bass, they're brilliant and in both cases prefer them to my old 96 MIA deluxe jazz

The strings on the relay bass were £7 off of ebay and everyone seems to like them.

Howard did one for my refinish and mod project. It's a squier jazz deluxe so it doesn't come with a plate, but Howard made a perfect one for me. Well, I applied a bit more clear cost throughout the evening and now I've run out, so I guess that's the paint done. I've added a few bits too. I was gonna save the big reveal, but I'm quite pleased. I'll take plenty of pics when it's fully completed, but here's a few for now... Ok, I've given up on waiting for decent enough weather to get the paint finished. The only space in the house to do it, is in my room. I've been dust coating the last few bits of orange, and just been applying some of the clear coat lacqaur. My room is now full of fumes, but it's now nearly done. Slowly getting there. All that's left to do, is the shielding paint, install the pickups and bridge, apply a decal to the body, get it all wired up, add the scratchplate (made by Bassdoc) and string it up. The only parts left to get...custom neck plate to match my other one, a single black strap button felt and the knobs. The knobs are being sourced by Rosetti so the match that of the Seymour Duncan pre and should be here in a few weeks time.
Handing the Bass over to Julian for his performance on Thursday. Good luck with it mate!! BTW.... I love the sound that those Seymour Duncan pickups make, what are they, i must get some for my Jazz Bass!
They're Quarter Pounders
The BassRelay has reached Cambourne.... and I have a gig in Cambourne on Friday (I play for both bands). Aqntbghd (Julian) has agreed to hand over the Bass to me for the night to play during this gig so we can pass the collecting tin around the pub and hopefully raise some money for this worthy cause!
And put the event details on the FB page too
Just had the bass delivered to me by Bluejay. Thanks a lot, next planned appearance is in Cambourne on the 31st of october.
Don't forget to post the handover and gig photos
Wow! Is that a Burlington close-coupled pan? Mint!
It's a lefty though
-
Its looking great. The colour is amazing too.
Cheers buddy. I've still a bit more work to do on the finish and the top coat. The only parts I've left to sort now, are the scratchplate which is being done through the bass doc and I need to order my neck plate to match my other bass and that's it. I've yet to source a wiring diagram though.

After the humbucker arrived, I took the bass to work today. Why? Because there's a selection of Polish chippies that are quite handy with a router.
