1. I do think the EV 15's in the diesel cabs (and that went for my old 2x18 too) have a lot more middle, and even top, than some might imagine. I can be a bit evangelical about it but not to the extent that others are wrong (and I wasn't suggesting you had said anyone was in your posts). Maybe what you say is right and I have just been very lucky; to find the right combination over 25 years ago and still be delighted with the sound. I don't pretend to be at the cutting edge and would be happy to find a lightweight and smaller package that sounded the same but I simply haven't and anything I've tried that claimed to be on a par just hasn't done it for me. Horses for courses, as has already been stated.
2.
I find that hard to understand! My experience with a BF 2x12 was exactly the opposite. Oh well - horses for courses, one man's meat, if everyone was the same life would be boring, and so on and so forth.
Absolutely, I am just giving my own opinion based on my experience. There is no right or wrong about it - although there are those who appear to think there is.
3. Have to say that my experience killed off any desire to go down that route. It was a Prodigy into a BF 2x12. I know the massive you mean and it just wasn't there. Save your money - though not your back. Maybe an old BF 2x15 will come up.
4. I can only relate my experience but I did not think the 2x12 I tried (with a Boogie valve head) - light though it was - had the same presence. I fully accept that it may be a psycho-acoustic trick and the speakers can shift the same air as my 2x15 but there wasn't the same effect. It wasn't an unpleasant sound but just not the same for me.
5. I have a 15 version. If you can stand the shame of coming to Portsmouth ( ) you are welcome to give mine a go. I've used it at several smaller gigs (including the Platform Tavern) and it's been far more than adequate.
6. I was thinking of starting a business selling instruments sourced from here. There was a great deal on a Gibson Custom Shop 1957 Gold Top. I thought I'd better buy one for myself to be sure I wouldn't come a cropper. The guitar was certainly not a Gibson and the finish was a later gold top sparkle. A nice guitar with (I am certain) Epiphone pickups etc but not a Gibson. It was ok for the money but clearly couldn't be sold as I had intended.
7. I'm sure I read an interview where he said he used a 1959 all the time. Not this bass it seems (not seen the vid) but recall that much.
8. Just noticed that my old bass (0189) is the one used in the Haynes manual. The note to Steve from John Entwistle is actually to me! How weird is that?
9. Got this for Christmas and was rather stunned to see my old bass featured (1953 bass no 0189) and they even have a picture of the provenance I got when I bought it from the Bass Centre - I am the Steve mentioned on the slip that JE signed.
10. I always think of him before the basses were stripped but then I'm ancient!
11. Not much in comparison to his Precisions is, I think, what is meant and is probably perfectly correct.
12. It's strange how we have different tastes but I cannot abide the Stones and even switch off the radio when they come on.
13. That's pretty much it. The controls are volume (both pickups), active (master) tone control and then the blend control. I actually love the sound of just the piezo but would like to have it working to its optimum so want to try and solve this. The lace sensor is completely lost - and has nothing of the tone of a Precision when it's on its own (which makes me think there's something wrong with it). For some odd reason I don;t quite trust a pickup without pole pieces (yes, I know that makes no sense).
14. Ok, so the trouble is the piezo is too hot for the pickup rather than the pickup being weak? There is mention of buffering but I'm prefectly happy with the piezo so assumed (never good) that the fault lay in the pickup.
15.
The natural P bass he used in The Miracle video shoot was a 61 which belonged to Phil Harris of Harris Hire. Apparently the natural one used in the 70`s had been smashed, so they stripped the red finish from one of his hire basses and this is used in the video. It is the most popular hire bass he owns and to quote Phil "It is simply an astounding bass. Hit the low E and it vibrates like a rampant rabbit!"
Seemingly now on sale at £8000 on his website (as is everything else).
16. I own a Precision A/E fretless and find the piezo pick up (in the bridge) is nigh on twice the volume of the Lace Sensor pickup. I love the sound of the bass 'as is' but read a lot about Cafe Walter preamps being used in these basses. My question is, is this what the Cafe Walter mod addresses or do you folk think there is some other problem? The Cafe Walter site suggests it's about a lack of bass from the piezo but I have to say I don't reckon I have that problem at all. Do I have a duff Lace Sensor or are they low output anyway. I believe the bass is stock.
17. There's a probably a market for GR's rolling pin. I'd buy it if I were allowed to deliver 6 stout blows to the head with it.
18. Ok, a youngster then ( ). Just checked and it was the white refin (Entwistle's first Precision) that was 26th March (1962). Congrats on an exceptional find. I sort of regret parting with mine but I just found the neck a bit too chunky (for me) and thought it was a waste if I wasn't playing it - not a problem had I been a collector.
19. Don't know if he's still 'dealing' but Protium here does (or did) a great line in pick up foam. I bought 4 lots and they have been exactly the right thing. Cut to size and with self adhesive backing.
20. http://www.deaky.net/bass/indexE.html Conveniently in English.
21. Just checked, apparently the 'ray is at the Hard Rock Cafe in Cleveland.
22. Just seen on the BBC site. Another legend gone!
23. Not sure which but one of the stripped basses was refinished in black with gold hardware and continued as his main bass. I am pretty sure I've seen that his Music Man and the slab Precision are at Hard Rock cafes somewhere. I would love to chat to the guy about basses. He has a spare tort scratchplate knocking around so I'd put in a bid for that. What I'd really like is a play through that awesome Acoustic/Hiwatt/Gauss rig he used in the early days.
