1. Yup, I've had two and both have been excellent as Paul says.
2. Freddie King - of course - Boogie Twist
3. Ok, look forward to meeting up. I'll tell you what I said to Rotosound and you can try it on your chosen string makers.
4. If you're doing much in the way of touring, I'd drop the company and email and ask about artist pricing. I became a Rotosound endorsee as a result of such an email.
5.
So only bands with an engineer out front can put everything through the pa? This is Bollocks of the highest order,
No, it's an opinion that contradicts yours, nothing more drastic than that. In MY experience, you need a guy out front to twiddle during the set as the room will change as people come in etc. You don't need a FOH but you are more likely IME to sound pants without one.
6. I'm with Phil. If you don;t have a FOH engineer then it's a non-starter. All through the PA can be fine (I take it the guitarists use Blues Juniors?) but the normal pub environment is very heavily against you.
7. Fine by me. My other half is a teacher at a school local to you which specialises in children with such conditions.
8. Another happy foam customer. Very rapid delivery.
9. No need to modernise at all if you get the sound you like. I have flirted with the idea of Barefaced but, at the SE bass bash on Sunday that particular flame was extinguished when I tried them. Very nice and light but not the same as the 2x15 that I cart around because I love the sound.
10. Glad you liked the bass Nik. I'll make contact with MIke so the K140 can be handed over for some experimentation. I had bought it because I recall reading that Norman Watt-Roy used them in the cabs he had made back in the early days of the Blockheads.
11.
Enjoy yours chap.
Or maybe let me know how much you want for it!
12. I bet you'll keep it. This is right in the 'purple patch' for Precisions imho. Light and with (probably) the B profile neck, they are superb basses and not with the premium price tag of the pre-CBS basses.
13. Yes, thanks for all the work done in organising the event. It was a superb afternoon and very informative. Nice, also, to put faces to names and real names to noms de Basschat.
14. Mark's a great guy and knows how to wield a teapot too!
15. The trouble is that a bass is the bottom 4 strings of a guitar and so they can play the instrument but they don't have the approach. It's easy to spot a guitarist playing bass because the choice of notes is almost always 'wrong'. I'm not a violent man myself but I would understand you being one on this occasion.
16.
Don't paint your cones, depending upon their make they will be made of carefully mixed plant fibres (markbass use a bit of banana fibre in the mix I think) possibly treated with a coating to damp resonances and adjusted for weight and stiffness.
So that's why they're yellow.
17. I have always considered I was. My dad had been a pro musician and started me off on the violin when I was 4, moving to piano two years later. I did that (and church organ) until I was about 14 when I discovered bass. It felt right straight away and I am probably the stereotypical bass player.
18. Just bought a Fender bass case from Josh. My rubbish sat nav lost most of our chatting time but a good guy and the case is just as he described. I would very happily deal with him again - and I know where he is now (which isn't the threat it sounds). :-)
19. I think the idea of named songs is to provide lyrics. No-one says it has to be a faithful representation of the original, as you say, it's a jam.
20. Sky is cryin' Thrill is gone - if you're feeling adventurous - 4 chords! Crossroads My babe (Howlin' Wolf) Hoochie Coochie man (the Johnny B Goode of the Blues world) Checkin' on my baby Key to the highway Help me Tore down CC Baby How long do you want?
21.
What are they? they're beautiful...
They will be when they're finished.
22. I also find this fascinating but my understanding is pretty crude. I have always found 10" speakers to make me sound a bit 'crude' (like listening through cans to a DI in the studio) whereas I've stayed with 15's because they seem to forgive my crude technique and just thump out a big note. I sort of thought that would be because the 10" cone can react quicker. I'm probably describing this terribly but that's just my experience/guess.
23.
If the bass is a looker and worth it, I regard that as a great price for what it achieved.
+1 I was lucky enough to get a handful from the Bass Doc when he was in production but quality is certainly worth the price - on this of the Atlantic anyway (ducks).
24. My experience was a fair few years ago, granted, but I operate on a one strike and you're out policy given that there are plenty of alternatives. In those days the basses were crammed into a tiny corner and were hardly worth looking at anyway.
