I bought a similar one recently but with a jazz pick up added... sounds amazing and inspires me a lot (and in the end that's all that matters) There is something really solid about these basses and there's a nice growl in it.. good luck with yours ! I always wanted to learn this one since it's such a fantastic bass line of John Giblin... I figured out the notes as good as I could this week (still not sure of some of them) and had a go at it and this is the best I could do.. It's a tough one to play, shows the genius and the musicianship of Giblin... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtAUasvmO5s

I can't remember a decent bass-line on the radio for ages... maybe if you dig into alternative music but in popmusic the emphasis now is on the product and not on the instruments. I've been doing sessions for a lot of people and no one is asking for anything adventurous anymore, there used to be times they would ask me for fretless or slap parts but just like with guitar solo's : those days are gone. They cannot risk of losing the attention of the people during something musical.. some singers wouldn't even know how to behave on stage while they're not singing. Look at those big shows of Madonna, Lady Gaga : not a musician in sight, they are hidden away, just like in the music. I notice that a lot of bass players who used to be prolific musicians are scared to play anything else than root notes because they could loose their job.. I agree : bass is dead and I have fond memories of the times I was allowed to express myself a lot more than I do now.

Bought this a couple of months ago because I needed a bass with a more traditional sound for a covergroup I'm in (Abba-repertoire actually). This seemed very handy since it had a lot of features I really like : the combination of the P and the J sound, the active electronics (mid, bass, treble) and the maple neck which feels like a seventies Jazz bass. Did about ten gigs with it but I realised that I long for a passive bass and that I don't need all the active features.. Instead of installing a bypass thing and messing with this bass, I found a passive one for sale which I rather like so this is for sale.. I'm asking 650 euros for it (I bought it new and it costed around 750), the bass can be collected (although then it's purely for the Belgian bassists :-)) and I can ship it to the UK for around 25 euros..I have a good feedback around here on bass.chat which you can check.. If you have any more questions : feel free to pm me (no trades please since I've got my head on a passive one I rather fancy).

Any tips on how to hear yourself when you play fretless live ?.
wombatboter replied to a topic in General Discussion
A nice midtone helps in any situation.. Fretless playing is always a challenge because you have to keep the other instruments as a reference and have to work around them... I've played with piano-players who were really picky about intonation but luckily didn't have too many complaints.. Being able to play with a clear sound of your own bass and enough information of the other instruments and it should make things easy enough to pull it off.. Having lined-fretless basses also is a great help.. -
I saw this somewhere else on a bass-forum and thought that I would like to share it here.. It's a really cool arrangement of the Beatles-classic with a lovely tone on that Skjold and it features some cool techniques which never take the focus off the actual song imo.. He even copies the solo which featured George Martin at that time.. He does a cool interpretation of "While my guitar gently weeps" too... Proof again that a great song remains a great song even in this context.. 'Isn't She Lovely' - Vic Wooten playing in a tent in the rain
wombatboter replied to urb's topic in General Discussion
Was the first thing I saw this morning and made me feel good... Wooten is just great.. I never have the feeling that he's digging out some old routine, he breathes and loves music.. He's also the bass player who brought out a lot of things and techniques in me, without him it wouldn't have been possible. Not that I can play like him but he showed me doors which I could open and he broadened my horizon... Every time I get stuck in a rut watching some stuff by him brings out good things in me... -
I think someone posted this a while ago on basschat...the sound on this clip is superb. This is the Level 42-stuff I'm really into.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ccT4C-nakw

I think àll the facial jazz expressions are in there...

Also saw a clinic of Freddie but how amazing that bass-line is.. after fifteen minutes playing this line with a big smile you get tired of this in the end. The rest of the clinic was a shuffle thing which didn't really excite me.. I think the could get 1250 euros at that time on an off-day during the tour in Belgium and just agreed to fill an hour with two licks..

I missed some of the crucial stages in his life (can't really say that I understood how it all came to success) but still enjoyed his love for music.. Also really jealous of that house he has.. Still can't really listen to his productions..he has a signature snare-drum sound I really hate and he uses it in all of his productions and it sounds like the drummer of ELO plays on all those tracks...It's a trebly snare sound which I find only appropriate in ELO but not in other rock situations imo..

Way Down ... disappointment of the year
wombatboter replied to Happy Jack's topic in General Discussion
I've met Jerry Scheff in France a couple of years ago and we had dinner together... He was a really nice person and talked freely about his life and I actually found it very interesting.. I made the mistake a lot of bassplayers make and complimented him on that killer bass-line on Burning Love... He grinned and said : "That's not me, that's Emory Gordy on bass"... Contrary to what seems to be the book, he had amazing stories to tell and he gave me detailed information about auditions, live gigs with Elvis, etc.. Just did a trade with bass-chatter "clic"..Traded my Elrick for a Lefay Remington Steel. Nothing to complain about, excellent transaction and very fast and trustworthy..
This is a stupid price, how is it still here??
Well, for me because it's in the UK otherwise I would have jumped into my car :-) Not really looking for this sort of bass but this still is very tempting : the looks just floor me and something just says "yes" when you look at that neck..

I recently saw a 62 Precision in Belgium for sale and landed on the same site.. I was very suspicious and called them scammers but they replied "We are a serious shop, what are you suggesting ?" I told them I didn't believe a thing of their sales and wrote that they should quit stealing from musicians and get a proper job.. They reacted furious so I told them I would apologise if they could send me a picture of that bass with a recent newspaper.. I've been waiting for a week now and nothing has popped up...
