1. Can't believe how quickly you buy and sell certain basses (same thing with the Status).. Maybe a bit more consideration before you buy something would be comforting to your bank-account..:-) I went through the same thing a couple of years ago (although I kept the basses longer) and now I realise that it was a disease and I'm not even kidding... Pity that the emphasis is a bit more on selling/ buying basses, especially since you are a great bassplayer (noticed that when I visited you in Brussels). I hope you'll find the one instrument that rules them all.. good luck with the sale and sorry for the off topic.
2. Whatever wood it's made of.. something tells me that this bass can sing, that's all that matters to me. I have always been a player and sometimes the specs of a bass don't mean a thing to me.. as long as it inspires me.
3. [sub]Pity about the drums in the Tillbrook-clip... tempo going up and down.[/sub]
4.
The tuning will settle. I love mine so much I have commissioned a 5 string one.
That's a comforting thought.. thanks !
5. Ordered one of these at Bassdirect for my birthday and I've been enjoying it a lot since last week ... It's just very handy to have around when you're watching tv or sitting outside in the garden. No need to plug in amps or drag cords across the room since the sound is more than audible enough when played alone.. Plugged in however it sounds huge and fat ...and it inspires (the most important factor). Thicker than a Precision but still enough definition. Only disadvantage for me is the tuning..it detunes quickly and you need to retune a lot.. Maybe the strings need some time to settle ? When it arrived it was detuned more than an octave lower and it took nearly half an hour to get all the strings to pitch.. Edit : other disadvantage : when you get used to the smaller scale of the fretboard and you go back to an electric bass, it takes some time to get back into your old habits.. When I took my Sandberg and played it again it felt like a truck when I compared it with the Kala. Conclusion : I love it and actually every bass-player should have one.. Short clip with the Kala.. 6. My pleasure.. the presets are very handy. Sometimes you have basses which create sounds through presets which I'm sure not too many bass-players will need but the Yamaha was very focussed on useful sounds in any situation. Perhaps a bit off topic but my experience (after having played and owned a lot of basses) is that certain "cheap" basses can easily compete with expensive boutique-basses (it's all between the ears). The Yamaha 1500 is in the same league for me as the Ibanez Musician, also a timeless bass which is still relevant.
7. He played it on a Pedulla Buzz in the studio..
8.
Thats a great job with the neck, sounds lovely too! Is that a passive? If so BIG sound.
Thanks, it's a passive bass..you cannot change too much, just has volume and tone and a switch for parallel/series.
9. Bit off topîc but this is Paul with a Dutch bass-player who does a great job... Pity that the voice is gone.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-Qv8SYYat4
10. I used to work in a shop in Belgium where they had some amazing basses (Ken Smith, Wal, Alembic, etc..). Funny thing but every time I needed a bass to demonstrate an amp or some pedal I used the Yamaha 1500 which was for sale in that shop.. I thought it was an amazing bass for that price and the slap was just gorgeous (full and rich like the Miller-sound). Also the bridge pick-up was punchy and sounded tight. When I stopped working in that shop I even bought it... I changed my gear over the years...not because the 1500 was bad but I wanted something else. It's really tempting to purchase another one but I'm trying to cut down and go back to playing instead of buying.. Still, these are amazing basses...
11. I can not understand how this hasn't been sold yet.. I'm using a Sandberg bass (my second one) and these are just incredible basses...In fact it turned out to be so good that it made me sell my Wal-bass and after 125 basses which I bought during the last 30 years I consider Sandberg as being one of the best basses I have ever played.. It's a pity that I have already a 5-string otherwise I would surely have bought this one..
12.
Wombatboter, I posted on your Youtube link also... Great playing! Really enjoy your melodic sensibility. Question for you....seems that your Wal is very punchy...is it so in itself or do you have your amp adjusted to gain this? I have Wal 5s and they don't have the immediate attack/pop you have. Curious how to acquire it as I play with a light touch and want that fast attack/punch. I do get close by adjusting my amplification...but it's interesting as I still don't get that immediacy. I can quite easily on my Zon fretless... Thanks.
Thanks for the kind feedback.. I think the sound is there anyway ...the amp is flat and actually it all has to do with the fingers. I have owned around 12 Wal basses and I never had any problems to get this particular sound out of it. I do play hàrd so I don't have a soft touch when I play a bit faster. If you play with that hard touch (which seems to work for me) and play above the pick-up it's actually hard to not have this sound. I use a bit more "meat" when I play more mellow parts.. Have been playing the Pedulla ànd the Wal last week and it's still hard to pick one as a favourite...There's something in a Wal which is unique but the neck of a Pedulla plays like butter.
13. Wings over America - the triple live album by Paul McCartney and Wings around 76-77...great songs, a superb bass-sound (one of the best live bass-sounds I have ever heard on an album). I wish he had never got rid of that horn section he used back then (keyboard Wix could never replace them with his synths) Joe Jackson - The BBC sessions (Graham Maby plays even better than on the studio-albums) Level 42 - Physical Presence Japan - Oil on Canvas. James Taylor - Live (Jimmy Johnson flies through this great repertoire)
14. Just another question.. are there dots between the lines or on the lines along the side of the neck ?
15. This remains my favourite...ok, it has the technique but more than that ...this grooves, has a nice melody and has a vision. How some people can call this "non-musical" or "only made to impress" remains a mystery to me.. He keeps on inspiring me..I'm not too fond of that God-thing either but he remains an amazing and unique bass-player. 16. So the bass is located in London and has to be picked up over there and not in Belgium ? Any reason why you are selling ? Seem to recall you were pretty fond of it..
17. I bet he sounds great on any bass he picks...he's got gold in his fingers.
18. I bought a Fodera Monarch once and I loved playing it at home, fast neck, really low action...just great. Finally I took it along to a gig and it just drowned in the mix, I couldn't hear a thing, something in the midtones which were lacking.. I kept going back to the amplifier and turned the controls but it didn't really change a thing.. I had the impression after two gigs that it just didn't work in a mainstream band, I have to admit it was the standard Monarch version (costed me around 3000 euros second-hand), not the expensive model although I had a picture of Wooten playing my bass in the UK. I sold it after a while and I found more "usuable" sounds in cheaper basses...
19.
New recording of Santana's smooth.
Great playing, really enjoyed that.. a great rhytm section with confident playing. Nice guitarsolo at the end too.. Heard the original just the other day on the radio and the bass-line captured my attention. Just good solid bass-playing with excellence in the details.
20. I think "Refuge of the Roads" has the best fretless playing ever..
21. Thanks.. I asked to put some epoxy on the fingerboard.. For the moment there are some flatwounds on the bass but might be I go back to roundwounds.
22. Bought a Pro last summer and just had it defretted... Not the best clip (it sounds more boomy in my new house) but it gives an impression.. It's a rather "limited" bass (just volume and tone and a switch) but it delivers the sort of sound I'm after.. 23. I can't help it but it still gives me the impression that someone doesn't take the music that serious if he has to read it..I know that sounds more harsh than it is supposed to. Songs I really love I don't have to read since I would like to know them by heart.. With all due respect to Barney but anyone with serious reading skills should be able to reproduce the same part as long as it's written out... When I see someone without charts he/she gives me the impression that it's the musician him/herself I hear and not the person who has written out the bass-line..
