Funnily enough we now work for a Belgium based company but we are in the UK! He also played bass on a Joan Armatrading album and his own band which IIRC was called Happyhead. As I say he now plays with Paul youngs c/w band...he normally plays bass still but in that vid he's playing acoustic guitar.
I recall seeing him in a c/w band while looking out for him on Youtube...together with Mick Karn and Palladino, Steve Greetham was such a source of inspiration and his phrasing was pure joy.
I see Steve almost every day. We work for the same company in our day jobs.
Wow...his playing really had a huge influence on me when I started trying out fretless (saw him live in Gent (Belgium) at the Vooruit). Don't know if you will but if you want just tell him that a bass-player from Belgium tried to copy all his lines and learned a lot from him..I owe him. (that fretless on "Rope Bridge", stunning)
Which is the weight?
I'll check on it asap.. unfortunately I can't weigh it for the moment (the machine's broken (what's the word in English ? Balance ?)) but I 'll see to it that I'll get the information. Thanks for the feedback from everyone so far..

To me these are still the "best" and most beautiful Status basses ever.. In the eighties I didn't have the funds to buy these basses and I would travel by train from Belgium to a far city in Holland where I knew there was a music-shop which had one of these (in a glass box with "don't touch" on it !). Finally I dared to ask if I could play it and for a brief moment I was allowed to try it out..The person in the shop wasn't the most friendly person and since those were the days before the internet you were treated like dirt since they knew they had the lucky cards in their hands.. I have owned Status basses since then (the luxury of a steady job at a police-station :-) "She came in through the bathroom window") but this model in particular still moves me...really hard to resist out of nostalgia, the great sound ànd a finger to the person in that shop in Holland.

Steve Greetham (Annabel Lamb)..such a great fretless bassplayer Marcus Cliffe (one of my heroes when he played with Brendan Croker and the Five o'clock Shadows)

I can understand that horn-players are reading charts but the fact that Barney is reading all of the time puzzles me a bit. I'm aware that SD-songs aren't easy but it's not impossible to learn these songs by heart. Perhaps a detail but it spoils the fun a bit when I see someone reading during every gig...after ten gigs you should be familiar enough with the songs to play them from scratch. I remain a huge SD-fan..just listened to Aja this weekend and it still sounds fresh.

I can truly understand that you can have a good time on stage and that you're enjoying yourself...it even happens to me :-) Still I think its weird when you see someone with a smile on his face nearly all of the time, it's been since Lee Ritenour that someone claimed that trophy.. Like in normal life, you can have moments of happiness but if you're happy continuously you're on something imo..

Used to be different but I can't stand his voice anymore.... Bought a couple of his cd's but unfortunately I'm not too fond of his compositions which I found uninspiring and nothing different than most world music. Very easy-listening and nothing else but smooth. Doesn't take too many risks imo, there's a spark which he has when he plays live which is missing on the cd's. It's nice that he refers to Jaco but when you do it during every gig it gets a bit boring...the whole bunch of manierisms he has becomes a bit tedious after a while : the ambulance he imitates, the fast slide up and down the neck he uses to end the solo, the smile which never leaves his face I start to find strange (try it yourself to smile all of the time like he does while you're playing, you feel like The Joker after a while). I have seen him live a couple of times and I got blown away by his bass-playing and his playing is mindblowing but I can only enjoy it in small doses.. A lot of world-music gets really interesting to me when it ends in the melting pot : Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, The Police (I like their reggae while I just can't stand Bob Marley).

Sandbergs - Tell me about them please - Cali JM4 / PM4
wombatboter replied to xilddx's topic in Bass Guitars
I think Sandberg basses are just amazing..I've had around 120 basses in my life (from Status to Alembic, from Fodera to vintage Fenders). I've sold nearly everything and I have around five basses left (a good fretless, a five-string, a nice P bass, my Wal and my Sandberg). I'm even thinking about selling my Wal since I enjoy playing my Sandberg more. The sounds are so versatile, remind me of a great Jazz-bass, a nice Ken Smith, a smooth Stingray... Tastes differ but it beats every Fender I have owned, even my '66 Jazz.. I paid 800 euros for this one second hand, it keeps on inspiring me.. -

"Le Band" I liked a lot and I still think that his slapping is a bit more musical than what others seem to accomplish.. The technique he has developed makes his slap more melodical and it leaves the "open E-string"-territory where a lot of bass-players linger just a little too much sometimes..
I really like the red one, but what type of wood has the one in the middle? It looks a bit like porridge.
From what I've heard it's a sort of chemically treated maple..also my favourite one in the picture

High End Fretless Question Wal Vs Pedulla Buzz
wombatboter replied to bassatnight's topic in General Discussion
I have owned both and there is something to say about each one.. Wal basses are a bit harder to play, the neck isn't as "fast" as a Pedulla but there's a distinctive tone which is its trademark. I found that the sustain on certain Wal-basses wasn't as good as on other fretless basses like for instance a Pedulla or a Lefay. I've been playing Pedulla-buzz basses for quite some time and I really like the sound, its sustain and the feel of their necks.. I sold my fretless Wal because of the sustain but now I have again a Pro defretted because I do miss that special Wal-sound.. Both fretless basses do sound different in the clips I have recorded so it all depends on your personal choice..(I do wear stockings in the second clip) -
One of them brought three basses along.. but he has eight.

Couple of fellow-bassplayers in Holland had a Wal-meeting and brought some basses along (unfortunately I couldn't be there because I had another appointment). Wouldn't want you to miss these pictures.. "]
